I was cleaning and consolidating. I had an archive folder on a separate
partition with favorites. I proceded to copy/move the ones I wanted to keep
to the proper folder. One of them, which I no longer remember as an attempt
to copy or move, became a mess.
I suspect I was low on system resources.
It left behind in the original location, not a shortcut, but a regular file.
The name of the moved internet shortcut is
http://www.emergencyemail.org/newsemergency/templates/templatestandard1.asp?articleid=33&zoneid=1

The other file is
U. S. Department of Homeland Security Provides Information and Toll Free
Number to Report Illegal Aliens and Activities - The Emergency Email &
Wirless Network .......... www. EmergencyEmail.ORG

, with the trailing space, if that is important.

Any attempt to change, that is, delete, rename, move, etc., I get an error
that windows can not find the file.

The path to the file is
E:\WINDOWS\Favorites\Government
Scandisk checking msdos name length doesn't see it.

What can I do to get rid of this file?

Norman

Norman,

Not knowing the exact details or reasons for the problem, I can only suggest
you a program that deletes stubborn files, called Killbox or Pocket Killbox:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Download this file, extract it, and run the killbox.exe file. When it loads
type the full path to the file you would like to delete in the field and
press the Delete File button (looks like a red circle with a white X). It
will prompt you to reboot, allow it to do so, and hopefully your file will
now be deleted.

Good luck,

Zee

Looks like a utility that will be useful sometimes. But not this time. Set
it to delete upon reboot and file is still there. Running in default, it
tells me it can't find file.

My best guess at this point is that some tron went out of whack and allowed
an illegal naming. Otherwise I am lost. No reference to it in registry.
Spybot, adaware, and CA internet security suite detect no problem.

Norman,

Try also CCleaner:

www.ccleaner.com

I suggest the slim version (English, no toolbar):

http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?f=3

Download, install and launch.

It will open under the cleaner section. ick ALL options under the Windows
and Applications tab and hit the "Run Cleaner" button.

Immediately reboot when it finishes scanning.

Test.

I had used that utility some time back, before current install.

I loaded it and tried to have it remove that individual file via custom and
selecting it. Still a no go.
This will require a bit of imagination to get something to remove it.
Windows sees it or rather explorer does, yet windows don't.

If DELTREE doesn't do it, I don't know what will.

I find it too weird not to be malware related...

Suggest you try the DELTREE option and then install, update and scan your
system in SAFE MODE with A-Squared Free 2.1 that you can obtain here:

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/

Good luck.

OMG, it showed up in dir with the extension that was created during the
glitch. Deltree, it's outa here.
Assuming got me in trouble again. My thinking was that a dos name violation
was involved and scandisk did not find it so I assumed scandisk was not
seeing it either. Guess I will never know that for sure since it is now
gone..
