    - Please help with error message when using Internet Explorer with M Last Saturday, our Dell, which runs ME, started doing two odd things. Most importantly, whenever we would try to type a new address in the address field in IE, it would give this error message: "Iexplore has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL. Iexplore will now close." This message occurred whenever you tried to change the address field at the top of IE. I looked at the this website and read the information at support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;265244&sd=dell. This told me to download IE 5.5 from one of two microsoft websites. I looked at both, but couldn't find any version of IE 5.5. However, there was a version of IE 6.0 for ME, so I downloaded that. It did not solve the problem at all. I looked at my version of MSHTML.DLL and it is listed as version 5.5, which may be part of the problem. Any help on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. At the same time, one other thing started happening. Normally, to connect to the internet, we double clik on IE. This opens IE and a dialog box called "Connect To" that contains the phone number, account name, and password to our ISP. Now, the Connect To box appears as soon as we boot up. I've looked in msconfig and can't find out any command to do this in the start-up tab. Any help in getting rid of this would also be terrific. Thanks so much.     - how to format win me for virus ridden hard drive My son's computer has multiple viruses and he is using Windows me.     - Freeze up on start up I run Windows ME and upon startup windows does not load. Screen freezes at different points on startup. At Windows ME screen, at DOS promt before loading ME, or at the beginning of Desk Top screen. I have to unplug PC to turn it off and then restart it.     - Systray clock - closure Follow up to all who helped <tried to help> me with making the 'hide_clock_feature' stick after a reboot. I decided to give my 6 year old PC a Xmas present and reformatted the hard drive (200,000+ reg entries down to just under 60,000). After hours of re- loading Win98 and upgrading to WinME (wish I had a full WinME disk rather than an upgrade disk) AND downloading IE6SP1 and ALL the patches and updates from MS AND downloading all my favourite applications AND downloading ALL the latest malware definitions AND etc etc ... I now have a systray clock that STAYS HIDDEN. ps ..... the 'floating clock' still floats and my systracl clock stays hidden, wohoo. <original message follows> Is there any procedure for disabling the system tray clock ? I can right click the taskbar, select 'properties' and un-check 'show system clock'. That removes the clock, but on next bootup the clock is back.     - DUN Not installed and a blank Windows Setup Tab 1. Am trying to install the SBC Yahoo CD but it says that DUN is not installed (which stops the install process). There is a DUN applet in Control Panel and I can get through the internet already. Any idea what is it looking for to say that DUN is NOT installed? Some registry value? 2. Also in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Setup tab, there are no entries in the "Components" list. It is completely blank so that it looks like nothing is installed.     - Blue screen of death Hello. I have WinME and recently when I simply close the IE I get the blue screen of death and saying: "error: OE-0177:BFF8E64B". Since I can not return to windows I simply shotdown and restart. Scan disking gives the following: "This drive's boot area contains importatn information that is damaged or invalid. This can casue windows to reprot the drive's free space incrorrectly or slowly. Scan disk repairs the boot area by recording the correct values in this area." When I say repair I get the following : " A program (or windows itself) saved information to your drive after the previous error was detected. scandisk must restart so it can include this new information in the scan for errors. This error, and any other errors that were previously reported, but not corrected may be reported again." So. I get back to the windows and wait for the next time around this happens. I seem to be free of scumware, spam or what have you. At least so report the Ad-aware, Spybot, spywareblaster, CWshredder, etc. Sorry about the lengthy message.     - Modem Installation Problems Just installed a new PCI modem and ME is not auto detecting it. I've tried: - Loading modem drivers from the Modem CD - The ME modem trouble shooting process - Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers - Device Manager, modem, properties, more info - Moving the modem into different PCI slots - checked IRQ settings etc The PC is only showing Com 1 and Com 2.     - For What It Is Worth I've had a continuing problem with my HP Pavilion system in that it would halt and/or go into Restart on its own especially after being on web sites or games that had a lot of graphics. Everything I read said this was indicative of a heat problem, power problem, or video card problem. I ruled out heat and power so I ordered a new video card. While waiting for it to arrive I learned enough cruising these MS NGs to check the memory status in the BIOS. I found that one of the two 64M chips was not working. Replaced the defective chip with a 128M chip and my system is running fast and I haven't had anymore random halts/restarts.     - Hibernate and Stand By Hi. Does Anyone AT ALL know why the Hibernate and Stand by functions have simply stopped working? I recently had to reformat my hard drive (first time ever) and all was well for a while until one day I couldn't use those functions.     - compatibility issue Background: I have a piece of software that is supposed to unlock a GSM phone from the phone company it was originally used with. The original company is in the UK; I am in the US, so third party unlocking software is needed to get the phone free to link to a new network. This was not a free phone and is useful because it is a tri-band unit usable in most countries. Problem: The program, called client.exe will not open properly. It reports Error Imported 0x02F2 API not found I reported the problem to the vendor, who responded oddly: "The software is compatible, although it is better to use a Win XP computer. We have had some customers experiencing trouble opening the file, usually the problem is solved when trying it on a different computer. If you still can't open the file with another computer, please email us." Can anyone clarify what the problem is? Running around trying random computers does not seem to be a reasonable solution. Is this software really not ME compatible? I can eventually get access to an XP machine but I would really like to know what the compatibility issue is and whether the vendor should be chastised for his advertised claims of "Windows compatible." caused an error in WININET.DLL. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Dell
support suggest a "repair reinstallation of Windows ME" I was hoping there
would be an easier way.
