    - MDAC Wiped Out by Auto Update Windows ME comes with MDAC 2.5. My MDAC got mysteriously wiped out, and with Windows ME you can't remove it and reinstall it. You have to reinstall Windows. So I did that. I have a fresh installation of Windows on a clean hard disk. Now, after a few days, I believe I discovered how the MDAC had gotten wiped out. The Windows auto-update did its thing and the next thing you know, I'm the proud owner of MDAC 2.7 SP1, wihch is only for Windows XP. That would be pretty good if it worked. Unfortunately, it looks like I have to reformat my hard disk again, in order to get any programs that use MDAC to work, including Visual Basic recordsets and a couple of programs that I have installed and that now give an error when I try to start them. The error says "Run time error 13 - Type Mismatch". I'm pretty close to certain that it was the Windows Auto-Update that did it. I uninstalled the two windows updates that were available to uninstall, but of course that's not going to undo the damage to the system's MDAC. Is anyone familian with this MDAC wipe-out problem with Windows Me? There's probably a 1 in 1,000 chance that it was caused by something other than the Windows Auto-Update, but I believe that's what did it. Now when I run a program source code in Visual Basic and tries to instantiate an adodb recordset, it says Server Component Can't Create Object. I use ComCheck to see what's happening with MDAC and it shows that my MDAC is now 2.7 SP1(XP). Tag: Very slow printing to shared ME printer Tag: 281517

    - AV scanner can't open Swap File. Hi When I run an AntiVir AV scan, it "warns" me everytime that it cannot open the file Win386.SWP which I presume is the Swap file. Personally, have been using ZA "happily" for some years. (auto updated) I seem to recall a comment somewhere that ZA "inhibits" SR. and I know it has to be shutdown to allow scandisk & defrag to run to completion; does this apply to kerio?     - Missing Icons from Start Button - My Dad's computer is missing all of the icons on his start button. We did the normal defrag and scan disk but hasn't been able to run his visus checker (via AOL). He also apparently can't open up some AOL email documents. When someone came over to help troubleshoot it the following odd questions were asked. 1) Does he have a second computer attached to the first one (never) 2) When he called AOL they mentioned that he had called last Friday (the day the problem started) but he in fact didn't. (perhaps my mom did and screwed the computer up). Is there a virus that would cause this to happen? ie make the icons on the start button dissapear.     - Can't open PDF files Hi, I have the following problem: When I am on the internet and I click on a pdf file it will not open. The reaction that I get is a new window and a triangle in the left top corner, acrobat splashscreen doesn't start as it used to. It used to work and for an, unknown reason to me, it stopped working. I can download the PDF file and open it with explorer. I am using Windows ME. I tried several times to deinstall and reinstall acrobat reader but that doesn't help. Anyone any suggestions? I want the power management facilities provided on the new (ATX) machine to work properly as well as the existing software, for which I have no installation media, to remain available.     - Cannot boot to windows Hello, I am unable to start windows normally. When I turn on PC it gets past the windows ME screen then a black screen with a message - Cannot find System.ini. And says please insert emergency diskette or something like that. I have tried to start in safe mode and it goes to the "it is now safe to shut off computer". I don't have any emergency diskette but do however have a recovery cd. If i have to do a factory restore will that mean all my infomation will be deleted?     - cannot boot into Windows me I believe I have lost my operating system - I do a safeboot and it shows no programs running. with a regular boot up the only progam that shows running is "bcmdmmsg" - My question is - if I go to the restoration disks and reload Windows Me will it destroy any data on the c drive - will it overwrite the file?     - Windows blue screen error VMM or MSCAN? My computer suddenly started displaying an error screen with these letters at the beginning....VMM and MSCAN. I have run a complete virus scan and it came clean and have tried a system restore....no luck. It does start in safe mode at this point, but I decided to just do a total system recovery, but it appears my disc drive is not reading my install discs.     - Disk Cleanup - Windows ME Hi, My HD free space is reducing at a steady rate apparently as a result of using the web. I have lost about 2 gigabytes over the last few months. I haven't created more than a few files (totalling less than 50mb) in that time. There are hundreds of files under Windows temp going back years that are not deleted by the disc cleanup facility. Is there another facility to enable me to recover the disc space? Can I safely delete any of the files in Windows temp? Appreciate any advice.     - Problem with "My Pictures" Folder This was an intermittent problem that has now become continuous. "My Pictures" folder (which is on my Drive D) is set up with the web-style java-based lower left side preview pane of whatever picture file is currently highlighted. (This preview allows the picture to be previewed and even rotated.) When this problem occurs, the preview is blacked out, with the little red X in its corner, and an error message comes up: ............................................................................ ....................................................... An Error has occurred in the script on this page. Clicking 'Yes' or Clicking 'No' makes the message leave, but any new action in the folder makes it reappear, regardless of which answer was clicked.     - Show file extensions in WinMe Hi everybody When I go into My Documents, not all of the files shown display their file extension. This is particularly true for .pif files. Even right-clicking on the file, and bringing up Properties, shows absolutely no information about the file extension. (I only know it's a .pif file because of its association with a .bat file of exactly the same name). Is there any way I can get ALL of the file extensions in whatever folder to reveal themselves? Just as an addendum to the above query, I use the CRON utility for scheduling events. The actual scheduling script goes into a file called crontab. However, no extension is shown for this file. When I try to open it, I must force WinMe to open it with NotePad every single time! The "Open with" dialog box has the "always open these files with" check box grayed out.     - TaskManager causes clock to stop Hi everybody When I open TaskManager on my WinMe machine, the clock in the system tray stops. Is this normal? I cannot think why there should be any connection between TM and the clock. However, when I shutdown TaskManager the clock resumes at the CORRECT time. We are herewith presenting our queries about the behavior of the RichTextBox RTF control with respect to its zoom feature and scrollbar when an image pasted in it is resized. Background We are developing a software application using Visual Basic 6.0 (for the Front-End GUI) and MS Access (as back-end database) that allows a user to build, store, and organize RTF (Rich Text Format) documents. The interface comprises of an area which contains an RTF control i.e. the RichTextBox control (richtx32.ocx). The user can type in text and/or paste images and use all the formatting features supported by RTF, in this RichTextBox control. Query 1 -Behavior of the RichTextBox RTF control when it is zoomed The interface of our software application contains a "Zoom" button which brings forth a dialog box from where the user can zoom and view the contents displayed in the RichTextBox RTF control. This dialog box contains a "Zoom-in" button which allows the user to view the contents in the RTF control at a higher zoom resolution, as well as a "Zoom-out" button which allows the user to view the contents in the RTF control at a lesser zoom resolution. The user can keep clicking on the "Zoom-in" or "Zoom-out" buttons to increase or decrease the zoom resolution respectively. We have observed that the "Zoom" feature discussed above, does not work in case our application is installed on computers running on Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows Millenium Edition Operating Systems. That is, if the user clicks on the "Zoom" button in the interface of our software application, the dialog box containing the "Zoom-in" and "Zoom-out" buttons is brought forth. But, clicking on either of these buttons has NO EFFECT. Query 2 - Behavior of the horizontal scrollbar in the RTF control If the user has typed in large text and/or pasted large images in the RichTextBox RTF control in the interface of our software application, then vertical and horizontal scrollbars automatically appear, in order to enable the user to scroll and view these contents properly. However, we have observed in case our application is installed on computers running on Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows Millenium Edition Operating Systems, the horizontal scrollbar does not work. That is, the user is unable to scroll the contents in the RTF control from left to right and vice-versa. The user CAN move the scrollbar, but the text and/or images in the RTF control DO NOT move along with the scrollbar - i.e. there is a 'False' sense of the movement of the scrollbar. We would therefore request you to kindly explain the reason behind the above issues, and thereby suggest suitable solutions for the same.     - 3 CD/DVD Drives not playing/burning CDs/DVDs Hi. Hope someone can help me. I'm having problems with my CD/DVD drives playing and burning CDs/DVDs. I've got; 1 CD writer (internal) 1 DVD player (internal) 1 DVD writer (external) I wanted to extract a .wav file from some CDs to make a compilation of my own music. I've done it 100 times before. I normally use Nero 6. This displayed some files missing. So I went through the Nero troubleshooter and followed all instructions. It didn't solve my problem. I decided to use another software extractor. This also didn't work. I then tried to play the CD with Windows Media Player. This didn't work. I tried various CDs in my 3 different drives and they all didn't work. If I double-click on a CD the following is displayed: "Windows Media Player cannot find the specifed file. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is, the file does not exist at the specified location, or the computer where the file is stored offline." If I right-click and then "Open" and double-click one of the tracks that is displayed the following is displayed: "Windows Media Player encountered an error when reading the CD-ROM drive in digital mode. Click OK to switch to analog mode. Click Cancel to retry in digital mode" I've clicked OK and Cancel but nothing works. This is the same for all 3 drives (2 internal and 1 external) The thing is, the track and artist information is being dispalyed correctly so windows is registering the disc. When I tried to burn a CD/DVD my software is informing me that there are no drives! I even tried removing one of the internal drives in the device manager and rebooted. The drive is back but has made no difference to my problem. Everything was absolutely fine before I went a way for a short break. No-one has been here to use the PC while I've been away. This couldn't have happened at a worse time. I've got my final project to hand in at college soon and no-way of getting the information onto discs! I believe this is a Windows OS problem.     - I have some questions. Hello, I am using windows ME OS. Now that microsoft is taking its old junkies to scrapyard, i thought it better to ask. Why isn't there any aministration tools provided in windowsME OS like the ones(i read in a book) with windows2000. There is no aministrative control which i can look forward to, this thought came over when i found out that there was no 'folder options' icon in my control panel. Even when i clicked one of its links provided(in help section), it said- 'this requisite is restricted, please contact your system administrator.' In windows2000 there are administrative tools, which work with co-accordance with Microsoft Management Console(which surprisingly is provided in winME). Is there any third-party programs (downloadable from internet) which give benefits like system policy editor, admin control and rights etc etc. just like found on winNT and win2000; which then could be gathered in MMC? One more thing i wanted to ask - there is a folder provided in operating system cds named as 'tools'. Which mainly contains the system policy editor. But unfortunately the cd of ME OS which i have at home does not contain that, so is there any website including microsoft which provides a downloadable 'tools' folder?     - Cannot install .net framework I have to install .net framework 1.1 or above in order to install an other software. For this I first install all the security patches on top of my windows Me with windows update. (no problem) Then when I install .net framework 1.1 from windows update the installation fails with the message "The installation program cannot reach the windows installer program". Then I try to install the windows installer program (version 2.0.2600.2) from the microsoft web site. unfortunatly when I try to run the program it replies "the service already exists".     - can not access second hard drive Computer: HP Pavillion XG825 C Drive: Quantum Fireball lct20 30 2nd HD: Seagate ST3120023A BIOS: Phoenix 4.0 6.0.7 OS: WinME RAM: 64 MB I am attempting to retrieve data from a Seagate ST3120023A 120 GB HD. Installed it in the above PC. It IS detected, displayed and named in the BIOS but not by Windows Explorer. Device Manager detects both drives but displays only: GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 01 (Drive C:) & GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 02 (Drive letter grayed out no options available to set letter). I expected Device Mgr to actually show Quantum Fireball lct20 30 and Seagate ST3120023A - not GENERIC. I experimented with checking REMOVABLE and then the drive IS detected and drive letter (D:) assigned but it claims the disc needs to be formatted and refuses to display data. Letter Assigner v1.2.0 doesn't even detect the drive. Disc Wizard for Windows by Seagate detects both drives and indicates Master for the Quantum Fireball (C:) and Slave for the Seagate. I believe I have the jumpers correctly installed and the cables correctly connected. Experimented with several different configurations of Master/Slave/Cable Select with no better results. Disc Wizard indentifies the drive but only wants to set it up as a new drive and wants to erase all data. I do not believe the data is corrupt. I would think that if that were the problem and the drive needs to be reformatted then Windows Explorer WOULD detect it, assign a drive letter and give me the bad news about the data. The only other thing I can find wrong with the computer: MSINFO shows an error 22 for ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering under Components Problem Devices. HP shows an update for BIOS for the XG825 but I am hesitant to use it. It says BIOS v2.10 update for MEW-AM motherboard. I'm not positive but I think this motherboard is CUW-AM. And the update does not mention fixing any problem similiar to mine. I have experienced similiar problems in the past and believe I found a trick in TweakUI that fixed it but not this time. I found the problem rather quickly: Control Panel | Sounds and Multimedia | Audio | Sound Playback | Volume Control | "Mute all" checked. Now I'm really puzzled as to how that could have come about. Unless it was something totally inadvertent on my part, what happened? Is this an indication of some worm or virus that anyone's heard about? All the checks I run come up clean.     - Deleted files don't show up in Recycle Bin Revisited Couple of days ago, for no reason I could tell, deleted files did not show in the Recycle Bin. RB Properties allowed deleted files to go to RB, System Restore no help either. I searched this NG for initial guidance but only found part of one pertinent thread. The two BAT files suggested by guru posters gave error messages when run in CD supported DOS mode and I was unable to tweak the files to make them work. (sorry gurus, DOS brain addled :-)) However I gleaned the following from the thread which worked for me and RB now performs as it should. 1 Boot to CDROM support (Option 2 on Emergency Boot Disk) 2 C: <ENT> 3 dir/p <ENT> (any key to continue scrolling) 4 RECYCLED directory present containing the usual DIR ., DIR .. and files DCx etc 5 attrib -h -s -a c:\recycled <ENT> 6 deltree c:\recycled <ENT> 7 dir/p <ENT> (any key to continue scrolling) 8 RECYCLED directory should not be there 7 Reboot to windows. 8 Test by creating a shortcut on the desktop and deleting; open Recycle Bin.     - Active X Problem - Office Update & Symantec Virus Scan I Just did a fresh install of ME, did all critical (and most of the optional) updates including IE6SP1 and WMP, then installed Office XP SP1 Standard. I cannot get office update to run. The activeX controls fail to load. As a check I tried to run the Symantec virus scan (from their website) and once again the ActiveX controls failed to load. I verified that my ActiveX and scripting in IE6 are correct. I set office update as a trusted site. I followed all of the "fix" instructions that are offered by the office update and Symantec virus scan websites. I am not running any antivirus or firewall yet. Could this possibly be connected with the issue I read about in a couple of the other answers in this forum that additional clicking (or keystrokes) is now required? -- Paul M.     - Taskbar I am trying help my dad with a problem that appeared on his computer about two weeks ago. On his taskbar it shows that a folder is open, basically its a folder on his c: drive, yet the folder isn't open. If he deletes it, he gets a message that it's will put it in the recycle bin. Linksys WRT54G wireless router
One Motorola Vonage ATA plugged into the router
One Linksys RT31P2 router/ATA Vonage adapter plugged into the router

Yesterday I created a Windows workgroup using the ME machine and two XP
laptops (one laptop using wired connection, the other using wireless
connection). The only shared device is an Epson CX5800F multi-function
printer on the ME machine. The workgroup set up okay, and the computers can
see one another. I think the basic config is alright.

However, printing from the XP machines to the shared Epson on the ME machine
takes a long, long time - approximately 3-5 minutes. Printing from the ME
machine, however, is immediate.

What might be going on here?

And please let me know what important info I left out. I will fill in the
blanks where I can.

Check the spooling settings on the remote PC - the one that isn't connected
directly to the printer. Try various combinations of the settings there to
speed up printing.
