Should I upgrade my operating system to Windows Me? I've been using Win98SE
(2nd edition) for about 4 years now and it has served me well on what would be
considered a Pentium II class computer (AMD K6-2 500mhz CPU).

I have another system which I acquired as a hand me down. The OS in it is
Windows Me. This system is a Pentium III class computer (600mhz CPU).

So far, both systems are stable. My only complaint is having to adjust to the
different graphical interface whenever I use one or the other.

How is one OS better than the other?

Am I correct to assume that Windows Me will operate as well as if not better
than Win98 on the older Pentium II class system?

I use the older system to do basic computing (word processing, financial record
keeping, digital photo editing, etc.) and the other system for web browsing.

I am not yet ready to upgrade to a faster computer until the end of this year.

Thanks in advance

In my opinion don't upgrade.

I agree with Zee. I've used both operating systems and found 98SE to be even
a bit more stable than ME. If 98 doesn't limit you in any way, stay the
course and save the effort for a major upgrade down the road. Joe

I can't believe so many people are having problems with
WimMe.

I've had mine from the first time it came out, i paid a
hundred and fifty bucks, i bought the full version.
(my sis bought a *ateway computer years ago and hers still
fly with every click, my brother too bought an *Packard
setup... i built mine from scratch)

Upgrading 98 was no problem at all for me, in fact i
believe it's the best operating system ever made simply
just because it dosen't need any service packs... think
about it .... do your homework, i don't listen to
everything someone types or say, check for yourself...
from Win95 to Win98 Win-NT, to Win2000, XP home to XP
pro....they all need service packs because they were not
ready in the first place. I could go on and on, on the
amount of service packs each one has or they are working
on.... but none for WinME !!
Well tweaked and having all hardware drivers up-to-date i
have my WinME working faster than my cousin's Xp pro
setup, in fact i even have it on a Raid-0 rig. That said,
i must also say that i have 3 gigs of memory installed
after adjusting my registry.
All of which makes it very hard for me to switch to XP, or
going back to 98.... it's easy and smart to know your
system.

Confirming our opinion, check this excellent article on which Windows to

I Upgraded from 95 to ME, skipping the 98/98SE stage, but I always
thought that 98SE and ME were similar in user interface... how not ?

I would never ever want to give up QuickLaunch, MyComputer cascade, or
MyDocuments simplicity, but I thought 98SE had all that (and am
currently considering trying a "downgrade" because of an apparent
incompatibility my old video capture program has with either ME or my
VIA chipset).

However I will happily give up the lack of a "Restart in MS-DOS Mode"
switch from the desktop, though I hear ME's the more stable of the two
because of it (mostly from users not fiddling around with Real DOS mode
would be my guess ;).

I think 98 would run better; ME's feature-richness can chew up system
resources.
