Win ME _ Outlook Express - Background Sound
When I place a sound (wav or midi file) in the background
of an email, everything seems ok until I press send -
Then I get an error window stating one or more objects

Change from me back to 98 se
The registry on my windows me is totally corrupt and I'm
TIRED of messing with it. I want to go back to windows 98
se. Right now my audio doesnt work, I cant use my cd/rw
drive and I can barely get an internet connection (very
unstable) Porblem: hdd compressed when me was installed.
What I want to do is completely delete me, set up new
partition and reformat my hard drive. Then install clean

Installing ME over Win2000pro
I'm trying to remove Windows 2000 Pro and reinstall ME from the
original disk that came with my Dell PC...so that I can then apply my XP
home edition upgrade which is compatible...go figure!
It won't let me do this...I removed the latest 2000 upgrade packs and
tried to run the ME instal disk...but it says I can't run this with 2K
running.
I then tried via the dos prompt but I get...
"You will need to create an MS-DOS boot partition to set up windows"!
Surely there is an easier way than this?

Error Message
I have the ME edition of windows. Quite often in the
middle of anything, I get this error message:
Error: 0E: 017F: BFF8E64B
I have to manually shutdown the computer, then when
starting up again, Windows runs through the check disk,
then starts up.

removing duplicate files and folders
In my experience with pc's I've deleted files and folders
inadvertently. As a relsult I tend to save and duplicate
many files and folders in "My Documents", although they
may have different names.
How can I search for and eliminate files and folders with
the same exact data, but different names?

need bootable floppy
Last night I downloaded updates from microsoft and when
the system rebooted it wouldn't. It stated that it
couldn't start explorer.exe and I had to reinstall
windows. Don't they test these things? The recovery CD
from the computer maker has gotten confused. I was told I
need to format the C drive first. So I need a bootable
floppy so I can get to a command line prompt. Is there a
location online that I can download the file to make a
bootable floppy?

I have lots of text files on one of my computers that uses
Windows 3.1 I also have another computer usine Windows
Me. I would like to find out if it is possible to open

Two error messages appear and will not go away.
wuauboot and wuauclt cause errors in ADVPACK.DLL
They are both Windows Auto Update programs, but now my

Rebooting
I have a problem with my ME, the computer constaly reboots
at startup, when I do it on it freezes. I have download
the Symantec Worm Tool and run it , it tells me my

Windows ME Registry
I have Windows ME OS and recenlty upgraded my Norton Anti
Virus from 2000 to NAV Internet Security 2003. I'm having
problems with Norton and the error messages I am getting
leads me to believe it's really a registry problem with
Windows ME. Below are the 2 most common error messeges I
am getting:
1. Registry Editor (window)
Cannot import C:\Program Files\Commom File\Symantec
Shared\Common Client.dat: Error accessing the registry
2. DiRT Error (window)
Product Trace Files registry value not found
I don't know what to do. I always troubleshooot my
computer problems myself and have always been able to
manage but when it comes to the registry I am just not
sure.I can seem to find a documented fix for the error
messages I am getting.

Outlook Express Password
cannot stop OE from requiring password when switching
identities. new installation - IE 6, setup id's NOT to
require passwords in ID management. Also checked ACCOUNTS
to insure password rqmt was off. OE still demands
password when switching id's for all id's except primary.

2nd hdd, changing drive letters, windows 2000
Hello,
the server system has a primary master with 2 primary partitions C and
D.
If I put a second harddisk with two primary partitions in the drive
letters are changed, so that I have
first hdd: C,E
second hdd: D,F
as the second harddisk also contains two primery partitions.
I can´t nor to do I want to change the partition type to extended,
since the second hdd is the backup of the first hdd.
How can I force windows 2000 not to change drive letter and mess up
all the programms? Is there a way to reserve drive letters for
harddisk partition in Windows 2000 Server.

When i power up my computer,it makes the sounds like it's

I keep on getting an error in explorer.exe, referring to
file oleaut32.dll It seems to occur when I am running a

freezing
My computer keeps on freezing up and I can't find anything
wrong with it. It isn't associated with any programs in
particular, and it has been getting worse over time (used
to do it once a week and now it's multiple times per
day). I dont' think I'm running anything troublesome

Error Message on updates
I get the following error message:

After looking through the microsoft Knowledge base, it
advised me to rename the winint.ini file, but I dont have
that exact file. However I do find other wininit files
like .err .sav .tmp .log .bak all in the windows directory.

windows management instrumentation tester
HELP! Every time our computer boots up, our icon screen
comes up, then the screen goes blank and when it comes up
again after 10 seconds, a window called windows management
instrumentation tester comes up. we have to exit out of
this window every time to be able to proceed. I have no
clue why this started or how to stop it. Anybody know

Is A0012688.EXE a virus file in ME?
I had a problem with the Blaster worm on my XP partition and got it removed
by the procedure given by Computer Associates and immunized the system with
the MS patch. After removing the virus, when I made a routine check with
Norton,
after downloading the latest definitions, it still detected a file named
A0012668.EXE with w32 Blaster worm in the XP partition.
The file is now incubated.
But the question now I have is:
1) What is this file Norton detects? Should I merely delete the file? Do I
also have to make the check in the Registry for any modifications done by
the virus in the registry? Do I have to do all this after disabling System
Restore, at least temporarily, and also in Safe Mode?
Could any experienced user advise on the correct course of action?

lock-ups
I am having trouble with my system since I did a format a
few weeks ago. My system keeps freezing for no apparent
reason, and when I boot up my floppy drive keeps trying to
read for several seconds. The only thing I have installed
differently is a firewall from Computer Associates (I use
the E-Trust antivirus and figured that the firewall would
be a compatible companion, but even with the firewall
disabled I get these sporatic lock-ups that require a
reboot. Any thoughts as to the lock up problem, and the

Can't open word processor or word pad, etc. without an

turns on by it self
Just about since I purchased this computer, every few days
it turns on by itself.
Most people I have spoken to (professionals) including the
dealer I purchased it from neither heard of this nor knew
what to do.
I have tried pulling the plug to no avail.
Other than this I have had no problems except recently the
computer blocks ccompletely.
I do find it very difficult to shut off the computer.
When I close down it says your computer can now be turned
off and this is what I find difficult (pushing the on/off
button.
I regularly run NORTON Anti Virus , both live updates and
complete scan as well as Microsoft.

Virus scan times out after 4 - 8 seconds
I am unable to run my virus scan; as soon as I execute a
scan it times out and exits from the task and returns to
the windows screen.
I have tried 3 different virus software packages and a

Upgrade message
After downloading an upgrade or installing something which
requires system shutdown. Get the following message;

Dial-up to ISP initiates at boot-up
Somehow my computer started dialing up automatically upon
boot-up. This is a nuisance since it is undesired. Can

I was infected with the w32\sobiq.f@mm virus. My virus
software deleted the infected file:

According to the WU installation history, I have installed the 'Security
Update, February 13, 2002 (MSXML 4.0) at least 6 times since April. Any

Cannot open email
As I'm now using AVG, I uninstalled NAV. In the uninstall process there was
a warning that my email is no longer protected and that I would have to
reconfigure it. True enough I can see all the incoming emails in Inbox, but
click as hard as I like and they just will not open. Someone please guide me

System freeze and rebooting
For the past month, our Windows Me has begun to freeze in
the middle of just about any application. The problem is
getting progressively worse as it was a once a day issue
in the beginning and now happens every 5 minutes. It then
takes 3-6 startups to get up and running. Sometimes it
stars in safe mode. Also, it just recently began rebooting
on it's own.

getting rid of user
everytome i went to shutdown my computer there wasa thiing
that said logg off gateway user. i got a gateway. i went
into user under the control panel and typed in a name to
get rid of that stupid gateway user. however i deleted
this new name because it wanted a password to log on
rather than instntly loading windows like it did before i
added the user name. after deleting the user everytime i
log on it still pops up with that user name and password
box before the windows starts up. is there anyway i can
delete that so everything automatically loads without
reinstalling windows and losing everything? any help would
be great.
