I cannot perform a clean uninstal of NIS (Norton Internet Security pkg)
using start/settings/control panel/ add remove programs. Nothing happened
when I repeatedly tried.
I'm concerned if I go into "My Computer", and take out all visible portions
of this program I will leave behind file fragments and corrupt the reinstal
job that lies ahead of me.
Help! I'm in no man's land. Did Symantec drop the ball on this or Windows
ME? Why is this happening? And what is the solution, please and thank you.

Symantec lost the plot about a decade ago and haven't seen the ball, let
alone dropped it, since then. I feel that by attempting to remove their
malware you are doing both yourself and your PC a service.

If you hunt around their site you should find an uninstaller that can be
used to remove NIS from your system.
