I am unable to delete anything. I get an error
message "Cannot delete (Filename): Access is denied. The
source file may be in use." This happens when I am trying
to delete regular files to programs to things already in
my recycle bin. Anyone know of a fix?

Thanks :)

Reboot into Safe Mode. Can you now delete files? Also run scandisk and
possible defrag and see if the problem is due to a damaged FAT.

Hi Mike,

I am able to delete the stuff file by file if I use
shift/delete. I have run scandisk and defrag but this
machine still won't let me delete stuff.

So Shift|Delete works but not Delete? In which case this sounds more as if
you are having problems with your Refuse Bin.

If you have TweakUI installed - click on the 'Repair' tab, and use the repair
Recycle Bin option.

Alternatively try resetting your Recycle Bin. You can do this as follows:
Boot to DOS using a boot floppy. Choose "Start computer with (or without)
CD-ROM support" from the menu rather than "Minimal Boot" as otherwise the
ATTRIB command will not be available.

At the DOS prompt type the following:
ATTRIB -S -H -R C:\RECYCLED
REN C:\RECYCLED OLDBIN

Remove the floppy and boot back into Win Me. The Recycle Bin should
automatically be re-created. Can you now delete files? If so delete the old
Recycle Bin (now named Oldbin).

If you don't have TweakUI installed the latest version of TweakUI for Win Me
(1.33) can be obtained from
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/powertoys/networking/nttweakui.asp

Download to a folder with a short name (e.g. C:\Tweak), run to extract
components, right click on tweakui.inf and then install, close the help
window that comes up to allow install to finish. C:\Tweak can now be
deleted and TweakUI accessed via the Control Panel.

Just a few words of caution though if you are new to using TweakUI on Win Me.
a) Do not change the first icon (My Computer) on the Desktop tab.
Doing this causes a number of script errors in Special Folders when using
either WebView or Active desktop.
b) Do not uncheck "Search Results" on the Desktop tab.
Doing this disables the Search in Explorer.
c) Do not hide the TweakUI icon on the Control Panel tab.
d) Do not uncheck "Show Control Panel on Start Menu" on the IE tab.
Doing this will prevent you from accessing the Control Panel including
TweakUI.
e) Do not uncheck "Shell Enhancements" on the IE tab.
This causes quite a few unexpected "problems".

Hi again...I downloaded and tried to install TweakUI as
you instructed. However when installing I get an error
message saying it can't find TweakUI.cnt which is weird
since I can clearly see it in the folder. I have tried to
download it a couple of times in case I got a bad
download. Same thing each time :(

Hi Mike, I redownloaded the file and everything installed
this time. I am able to empty the recycle bin and delete
things now too. Thanks so much. I do have another issue
that just started. Should I post another question out
there? Just in case: All of a sudden I can't access
certain websites that have pop up ads or ad's that scroll
or flash...the screen locks up to where I have to hit ctrl-
alt-dlt to get out and then ultimately reboot. Any ideas?

Thanks so much!!

Liz,

So your problem was due to a damaged Recycle Bin. Interesting. Thanks for
the feedback and I'm glad to read you've now fixed your problem.

As to your new problem I would suggest that you as a new thread either in this
newsgroup or in the windowsme.internet newsgroup.

Cheers,
