 - can't download updates I try to download the critical update patch and it appears to start the download and shows all files downloading but then it doesn't go any further.  - message not understood when displayed Greetings. I can't find my post, so I'm reposting this. Every time I boot up my computer, I get a small window that states "The device is not ready. Please try again later"; my NAVP detects nothing. Please let me know. One time my MFC drivers would not work, and DC ROM Drive would not open; I had to shut down my computer and kill the power for about 1 minute, and then boot up, to finally get them all to work again.  - Help with Service Pack Install Please I have a 450Mhz desktop running ME. Windows update tells me I need to install several critical updates including SP-1. The download goes fine but when it starts to install it says a previous install was unsuccessful and do I want to continue the old install or start new.  - how to tell history of children's computer usage Hi, I have a son who is on computer restriction. He knows how to delete internet history. Is there a way for me to track which programs he may use when I am not around, with the time used? Can I even tell when the computer was turned on? Is there a way to disable his ability to delete internet history (which many parents would appreciate as a feature)?  - automatic windows update I am running windows ME and microsoft is sending me to their update site when i connect to internet. due to all the virus Emails I am getting I want to personalize the update site settings but am unable to do so. I have followed all the instructions to do this; changed internet options in miscellaneuos to enable and have deleted the oWindowsupdate file that was in C\windows\ApplicationData\microsoft\Internet etc. however can still not personalize the update site. i want to be able to see what has been installed and what there is to install and make my own choices. I do like the update site just saying that there is an update and do i want to install. this is not good enough, I want to know exactly what the update is and why i need it and what it does.  - URGENT : Recycle Bin Problem Hi there, can someone please help with a Recycle Bin problem ? The problem is that when I send something to the Recycle Bin (as I always have done), when I then look in the "Recucle Bin" either using Windows Explorer or the Recycle Bin Icon on the Desktop nothing is there ! The Recycle Bin Icon shows that there IS something in the bin (i.e. "litter" is shown in it). On the "Properties" for Recycle Bin I have the "Display delete confirmation dialog" ticked. Windows explorer sees file in all the other location as normal. I have not altered anything lately but when I deleted by accident a file last night I realised I could not retrieve it in the usual way. I have been emptying the recycle bin from the Desktop icon, so I do not know how long this problem has been there. I really need to retrieve the file, so I dare not empty the recycle bin now !  - Instead of picture, or video, a small square appears. Why I hope someone can help me with this because it is so frustrating. Not always, but for some percentage of the times, when a picture, or a video is supposed to appear, I get a small square inside of the region where the picture would normally occur. Why is that?  - Restore file infected I have been plagued with that W32/Swen.A@mm virus, and Norton's can only quarantine the infected files. One of the quarantined files is C:\-RESTORE\temp\A0000165.cpy. Does the word, temp, mean that it is just a temporary file and not my REAL Restore file. I have disconnected the Restore function, but eventually, I would like to have that program available. I was interested that Norton's showed the words "you are still infected" even tho the files are quarantine. I guess I just wait until a solution is found to Repair.  - ME locking up at shutdown Recently upgraded video card without any problems. System works find and video card functioning as expected. Only problem is whenever I shut down ME. Monitor goes to black screen (no not get It is Safe to shut down your computer) and box hangs up (fan continues to run). Have to disconnec power to turn set off.  - Restart Windows in DOS...? I'm using Win ME upgrade from WIN 98. I'm wanting to format drive c, clean wipe. Ive done it no problem with Win 98 before ,by just restarting computer in DOS. Win ME doesnt give me this option. It is the ONLY way I know how to format C drive. Ive tried using Boot Disk to and selecting option start without CD ROM support, when command prompt comes up, typing format C:, but it is invalid. Can someone please tell me how to do this?  - Blue screen error messages and scandisk troubles too When trying to scan hard drive today with Norton's Anti Virus 2002, the file numbers scanned quit changing and I now get a blue screen after about a minute. It says WINDOWS "Error 0E:0028:C00584D5". Doesn't say fatal error or list any vdx or whatever. Also, I noticed I now can't run scandisk except from a floppy, which complete ok eventually on the thorough test. I have uninstalled and reinstalled NAV, and problem is still there. What's going on?  - Security Update Having a problem with the Security Updates for Windows ME. I downloaded the Security Update -- the one that needed to be installed by itself. The file downloaded properly but when the system restarted, it gave a message that it didn't really install. I can't remember the exact message. I did it again and I got the same message. Did anyone ever get stuck like that? Would a hard boot fix this problem? I am not in the same location now as the computer I had this problem with. Just for background, I had just scanned the disk, defragmented, got rid of all the temp and temp Internet files, installed new Anti-Virus software. Everything was working well.  - Kernel processor usage always at 100% My kernel processor usage is always at 100%. The system is always in need of a reboot after running for about an hour. At first I thought the problem was RAM but I've got 640MB. I've rebooted in selective mode by using the msconfig boot options and when I run the system monitor after I come up the kernel usage is around 10%. Anyone have any ideas what is killing my system?  - Aaaargh! About every two minutes my computer goes off and tries to read the CD-ROM drive. If a CD is in the drive, it brings it up. Otherwise, everything hangs for a few seconds while the empty CD drive spins. If I take the CD out and reboot, I can hear it accessing the drive every two minutes or so, but it doesn't hang. Once I've used a CD in there, though, it will hang every two minutes while it tries to bring it up whether there is a CD in the drive or not. Any ideas?  - Error messages After a 4th reinstall of ME on my HP, I know, but it was a free CPU, I now get this error message after it has gone into screen saver and shut down, and I hit a key to wake it up; it first says ERROR: 0D:1907:01676BD7 and hit any key to go to windows or CTRL+ALT+DEL for a restart, then it gives ERROR OD:0978:015F268B.  - October 2003 Cumulative Patch Microsoft sent me the October 2003 Cumulative Patch as an email attachment. Unfortunately, my PC's antivirus software removed the attachment as it believed it to be infected with the w32.swen.A@mm virus. I would like to receive the patch, but I am really struggling to contact Microsoft, to ask them to resend it. I have registered for a .net passport, but I just seem to be going round in circles.  - DirextX 9b Is this the right forum? I have updated two PCs running Win ME to DirectX 9b. PC (a) is Athlon 1GHz, NVidia TNT2 32MB, 256 RAM (133) and works fine. Pc (b) is AthlonXP 1.8GHz, NVidia GeforceII 64Mb, 256 RAM (233 DDR). I have updated to the 45.23 driver on both but PC (b) fails the Direct 3D tests. I have "downgraded" the driver to the WHQL signed version from MSoft but this is many versions out of date. Before updating to DX9 version 43.45 of the NVidia driver worked fine (DX8.1)on both m/cs. With this combination and running Grand Prix 4 on both, on the slower PC the game runs much faster with a much higher resolution than is possible on the faster, more powerful machine.  - Windows ME Clock Problem Windows ME Pentium III 866 128MB RAM I have a re-occuring problem with the clock in Windows ME. The clock stops quite often, when I check the clock settings it starts again with an incorrect time. I have checked the BIOS, which gives me the correct time and when I re-boot the computer the Windows clock is updated with the correct time. However it begins to slack off again. Keep restarting is not an option. Has anybody else had the same problem and has overcome it or is there anyone out there who knows how to solve this.  - Stalling on Startup/Restart My friends computer at work is having problems on start-up and restart. It always halts on the first start up screen where memory is checked except it doesn't even go that far, it goes as far as Rev 7 and at the bottom, but not always, there is a red E next to the line "Press DEL to enter SETUP." When you install WindowsME, if you do not put a password
in the initial login screen it should not display
again...Well, I do not have a password but the dialogue
screen displays when I first boot up...Can anyone help me
turn this off...

This worked for me:

Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon and select Properties
On the Configuration tab, select Windows Logon in the Primary Network Logon
box
