I experienced a big problem. System restore would only run about 2/3 of way
and lock. Reboot showed it failed. I found my system.ini totally messed.
Just prior to this I was getting an error when attempting to compact in OE.

Does this make any sense?
Looked for backups, and found system.cb, but was of same date and held only
keyboard, intl, & boot segments with last only showing display fallback.
I replaced with sytem.bak, likely made shortly after first install. Still
system restore refused running. Full scandisk kept locking, but ran from
safe mode, which took about 8 hours on 80G that is almost empty. Reported no
errors, but thought I'd give system restore one more try. I had points back
to late Oct as I recall, but this morning find everything before Monday
dumped.

Any clues as to what happened are greatly appreciated. Anything else I might
need to do?

I've gotta go now, Norman, so I won't get into the whys, but if you run:

scanreg /restore

being sure to include the space between the g and the / and choose the most
recent date (or, if necessary the one before that) it'll restore system.ini
(along with win.ini and the registry, and anything else you might have added
add the bottom of scanreg.ini !).

Tip: add

Files=11,vmm32.vxd

after the registry restoration (you'll see the confirmation of doing this at
the bottom of scanreg.ini!).

At a guess, you're using Norton software - that's what went wrong!
You probably also had email scanning enabled - which is totally unnecessary.
You probably also were attempting to compact the OE store while online -
which can lead to problems.

It's not too surprising that a full scandisk of an 80GB drive took that
long - but the question is, did it show any significant errors?? -
particularly Bad Sectors???

If, as I suspect, you have Norton installed, then your System Restore
problem was probably caused by LiveUpdate, which has a nasty habit of
corrupting the SR control files in such a way as to cause a 'stuffed'
folder. This results in a total lockup when SR is attempting to create the
new System Restore point prior to doing the Restore itself.

I see that Shane has already pointed you in the direction of "Scanreg
/Restore" to fix your problem with the system.ini file.

As to why SR apparently reset itself, it may be that something in the
hardware caused this (adding/removing an HD will cause SR to reset) or
perhaps it was triggered by something else you did.

it may be a good idea, once you have the system up and running again, to do
a manual clearance of SR, so that you *know* it'll work next time (and get
rid of Norton, if it's installed!)

No Norton. I have partition magic and ghost, but have never installed them.
Reported no errors on scandisk.
I removed a couple of software utilities, but as I recall restores were
available afterward.
USB keyboard died, and removed from device manager, replaced with ps2. Only
removed usb devices and self installed upon boot.
Will try Shane's suggestions when time permits.
I hadn't turned off the auto compaction in OE prior to error. I did and work
offline and then managed to compact folders. Turned all back on and it then
functioned as it is supposed to. Guess there is a problem with this that I
need to turn that stuff back off or risk losing mail.
I was attempting another system restore when I noticed all the points, a
months worth, were dropped. I took the oldest point, Monday and ran just to
see if it would now function, which it did.
Does that system.ini file make any sense? Or what happened to it?

Re: System.ini by Noel

That system.ini file is garbage - and fit only for the recycle bin.
It seems to have picked up some part of a directory listing - possibly from
\Windows\help - somehow.

If you did indeed have SR points going back to October, then your SR archive
was still at default - and you need to limit it to something more like 400MB
(one notch above the minimum 200MB), Points more than a week or two old are
unlikely to be good for use anyhow.

You do need to turn background compacting in OE off - do it manually once a
week or so (depending on how much deleting you do), by using File|'Work
offline', then highlighting the 'Outlook Express' in the Folders pane, and
using File|Folders|Compact All Folders - once it's complete, you can go back
online

what does the one you're currently using look like?

If you've already used System Restore, then you should be back to a working
system .ini, assuming your problem happened after Monday, otherwise the
scanreg is the way to go, and quickly, before the older points fall off the
end of the board!
