Does anyone know how to do a "cleanup" in the System
Configuration Utility? I know you can unclick check-marks
and click 'apply', then the system reboots. However, I
have this nasty Kazaa thing that keeps coming up, even
after unchecking it. There is a button that
says "cleanup", but does it clean up the checked boxes???
Which is the proper way? I wonder if this is what is
causing my Explorer errors?
Thanks,
Tina

There are a number of programs that will perform the removal of Kazaa for
you. However, here is a site that provides manual removal instructions.
http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/k/kazaa.asp
This does require editing the Registry, so, if you are uncomfortable with
this aspect, it may be best to get an app that will do the work for you. I
may be mistaken, but, I believe Spybot S&D will remove it and I know Pest
Patrol will. Spybot is free from
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download , Pest Patrol is a
$$$ program. Also, Adaware6, free, from www.lavasoft.de may rid you of this
pest. Both are good apps to have around, anyway.
Heirloom, old and hope that helps

Thanks, Rick and Heirloom,
I do have McAfee's VirusScan and Firewall which does
automatic update. I detected the original Kazaa and Adware
with the program. But I guess what happened when they were
quaranteened, I then had to disable system restore to
delete them as the stuff was copied into the Restore
folder. When I then uninstalled Kazaa, it must have left
some other files which are now not detected but still
running? In my System Configuration utility there are
checkmarks on a three suspicious files, some of which look
like this: regsvr32/sC:\windows\system\... What is the
regsvr32? One of them that is checked,I did a file search,
but can't find it.
Thanks,
Tina

MSConfig should contain no such entry. Unfortunately you show not to include
the name of the file involved saying instead .... What regsvr32 is doing each
time you boot your system is re-registering this unnamed file, which is almost
certainly malicious, so that it is ready to go each time you boot your PC.

Tina,
If you look at the Pest Patrol link I provided earlier, for the
manual removal of Kazaa, you will see that there are a whole host of files
that this program splatters throughout your system.....it is quite invasive.
If you print out those instructions, backup your Registry and perform the
manual removal....following the instructions with explicit detail, you
should have no problem. Rick and I also provided links to Ad/Spyware
removal programs that should be able to eliminate this pest for you. If it
has been 'partially' removed already, these may not work as well and you may
have to resort to some manual effort using the Pest Patrol instructions.
The following sites will tell you what you need in your MSCONFIG start up
and what is 'fluff' or malicious.....may help you in your quest.
