If windows boots into "Safe Mode" it clears all
the system restore points upto that point?
Any help be appreciated?

What third party utilities do you have installed that might cause this?
You say booting into Safe Mode clears the system restore archive but what
happens if you boot normally? Does this also clear the archive? How long
has this been happening? What changes did you make to your system, both
hardware and software around the time this problem started? What drive
letters do you see in Windows Explorer when in Normal Mode and when in
Safe Mode? In the _RESTORE folder on each drive you should see a file
named srdiskid.dat - does one of these have a later time stamp than the
others? Do you perhaps have an external usb hard drive connected that
isn't accessible when in Safe Mode?

Mike
It is a new installation on a machine. It has usb hardisk and
pen drives but not always connected. I connected when i
need it. I did not notice the changes in the archive.
It just happened during the usb printer installation. At one
stage nearly at the end it became stuck. I turned it off and
on to restart the os and it went into safe mode and there i
noticed that all points gone.
There are two files srdiskid.dat on C: and D: hd partitions with current
dates.
I tried to save a manual point and it did restore it ok.
i did not installed the patch for RS which solves
the dates problems.
May be the USB connection causing the problem since
the "USB Mass Storage Device" could be set properly
in the Device Manager as it indicated a yellow mark but
that problems is solved now and there is no any warning
signs.
The "USB Mass Storage Device" in the device manager
is attached to "Harddisk Controller" and as well as to
"USB Controller"

AAH,

I suspect the problem is due to the external usb drive with Win Me in
Normal Mode seeing this as a fixed rather than removable hard drive and
therefore monitored by the state manager. When you boot to Safe Mode the
drive possibly doesn't show in Windows Explorer and this then triggers the
state manager into resetting system restore with the loss of all
checkpoints. What drive letter gets assigned to the usb drive when it is
connected?

Two things you can try (sorry I can't test either at the moment):
1) With the usb drive connected open the Device Manager and on the
Settings tab see if Removable is checked or not. If not, try checking it,
and clicking Apply. Now remove the drive and see is this causes system
restore to reset. Then try Safe Mode and check what happens.
2) Do you have legacy usb support enabled in the bios? If this is an
option enable it which will then mean that you can use usb devices when in
Safe Mode and may also help solve the problem.

Please let us know what you discover.

Mike
Thanks for the advice.
In normal mode in windows explorer the USB connection
is shown Removable Disk where as in safe mode is not
available.
The USB Legacy Support in setup/BIOS/CMOS has
3 options :
1. Disabled
2. Keyboard
3. Keyb+Mouse
Number 3 Keyb+Mouse is the current setup.
This is a USB 1.1 May be USB2 has different options.

The Restore points seems to be ok so far.

In the device manager there is no Setup Tab. It has
General and Driver tabs.only.

Settings not Setup and I am a little surprised that this is missing. Does
your fixed hard drive have the Settings tab? This could be a usb "thing"
and as I mentioned in my previous post I'm not in a position to check as I
don't currently have a real machine running Win Me with usb available to
allow me to check (I'm currently running Win Me in what is called a
virtual machine which doesn't have usb support).

Legacy USB, this appears setup as it should be and it looks as if even
with legacy USB enabled the usb port is not showing which I think is what
could well be causing the problem even though the drive is marked as
Removable. I suspect that you are just going to have to learn to live
with this problem.

Does this mean that your USB drive is connected to an add-on usb card
rather than to a socket on the motherboard? If so the add-on card could
be a factor.
