System restore does not make system checkpoints. Any
points I create only last about 4 hours and then
disappear. I have the proper patch. I have 10 gigs free on
a 30 gig hard drive. I have the system restore set to max
on the file system. I have disabled and then re-enabled
system restore. Any other ideas from anyone?

How much space is taken up by the _Restore folder??
What is running in the background? - can you make Manual restore points? -
what error message do you get if not??

Thanks for replying. Restore uses 832KB. Norton is the
only thing running. I can make manual restore points, but
they only last for about 4 or 5 hours and then they
disappear. No system checkpoints are made at all.

How did you establish the 834KB for the _restore folder?
Do a Search for _Restore on your PC - r-click on the resulting folder, and
select Properties.
What's the result?

It may be best to completely clear the archive from DOS, and see if that
resets the control files, so that it acts properly (in theory at least) and
then proceed from there.

Look here for instructions
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/quiktipsr.htm

Post back with your results, and we'll proceed from there.
(BTW, are you using GoBack??)

Re: System Restore Problems by Mike

I, like Noel, feel there is something odd about the size for the _RESTORE
folder as it should contain as a minimum a little over 2MB of files rather
than 834KB. So again please check the Properties of the folder or
alternatively confirm that you have set Explorer to display not only hidden
files and folders but also protected system files and folders. To do this in
Explorer - Tools | Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files and
folders" and UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files".

So, if 834KB is correct, it is clear that there is something seriously wrong
with the state manager's control files and this can only be remedied by
clearing down the folder from DOS and letting the state manager rebuild the
necessary files as has already been suggested by Noel. I would suggest you do
this as follows:
a) Boot to DOS using a floppy. Do NOT choose "Minimal Boot" from the menu
when booting from a floppy but rather choose "Start computer with (or without)
CD-ROM support" otherwise the ATTRIB command will not be available.
b) At the DOS A:\> prompt, type:

ATTRIB -H -S -R C:\_RESTORE
REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST

c) Remove the floppy
d) Reboot your PC
e) Delete the folder C:\OLDREST
f) Check that an automatic system restore checkpoint was created.
g) Adjust the space allocated to the restore folder:

Finally you may want to give system restore the once over by carrying out the
following quick test.
a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file.
b) Create a manual checkpoint
c) Delete the shortcut
d) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created.
Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages?
e) Open system restore and check for checkpoints. How many are there?

Yep, you're right. I spoke too soon. I peeked at my
computer again at 12:20 and all my system restore points
had vanished. Here's what's in the folder: CABBIT 57 KB;
FILELIST 60 KB; RSTRLFN 29 KB; RSTRUI 405 KB; SRFRAME.MMF
1 KB; STATEMGR 25 KB; STMGR 61 KB; DATAGTOR 1 KB; RSTMAP 4
KB; RSTRLOG 3 KB; RSTRS21.da2 1 KB. The RSTMAP, RSTRLOG
AND RSTRS21.da2 are dated 12/1/03 if that's of interest.
DataStor is dated 4/23/03. The rest are all dated
6/8/2000. Let me know what else you need, and keep it
simple if you can (like a step at a time). I'm old and
dumb.

You are not looking in the correct folder. PLEASE check the correct folder
which is C:\_RESTORE. You are looking at the C:\windows\system\restore
folder.

As to what to do next both Noel and myself have set out step by step what
needs to be done.

OK, I actually understood you. I just love DOS. Windows is
always so busy "doing things". In the _Restore file I have
VXDMON.DAT 63,458; VXDMON.CFG 28; SRDISKID.DAT 1; and
DISKCFG.DAT 104. I don't think I understood the rest of
the message i.e., setting things out step by step. Am I
missing something here, or are you scolding me? I'm
trying, truly I am. I don't know why Noel thanked you, but
if I made him crazy, I do apologize.

Judy,

Trying to keep things very simple.

A) PLEASE try and answer Noel and my questions. Whilst you are now looking at
the correct folder you still seem to be unable to tell us the total size of
your _RESTORE folder. In addition to the four files you mention at the very
least it should also contain DSINFO.DAT and five folders, three of which
should also contain files. I explained in my first post what you needed to do
to see the hidden and protected system files when using Explorer. Could you
please try to do this?

B) Noel and myself have both set out exactly what you need to do to fix your
problems. I cannot set out the steps any more simply than I did in my post
timed at 16:03 GMT today. If those steps (a) followed by b) followed by c),
etc.) are too difficult to follow or understand then please get a friend to
help you.

Hi, Mike. Sorry for the trouble, but I truly did think I
was answering your questions. I believe my hidden folders
are showing. The dot is in the hidden folders circle and
the lighter yellow folders are showing.

My _restore file shows the following:

.<DIR> 03-28-01 12:17 p
..<DIR> 03-28-01 12:17 p
VXDMON.DAT 63,458 04-23-03 10:03 p VxDMon.dat
VXDMON.CFG 28 12-03-03 7:21 p VxDMon.cfg
SRDISKID.DAT 1 04-23-03 10:03 p SRDISKID.DAT
DISKCFG.DAT 104 04-23-03 10:03 p DISKCFG.DAT
4 file(s) 63,591 bytes
2 dir(s) 10,940.94 MB free

Hopefully, this information will enable you to see the
other files. I'm sure you're right, but honestly do not
see them. The 4 files are listed, the 2 directories are
listed (and as I remember, the <Dirs> are just headers and
don't contain any files), and if there are any hidden
files, shouldn't it say 4 files and (x) hidden? I did a
search for DSINFO.DAT and it came back "no results". You
didn't mention the names of the other five folders, so I
couldn't search for them. Let me know what to look for.
I know I'm trying your patience, but it's not
intentional. Bear with me, please. I really am trying to
follow your directions.

Judy,

You either a) have still not enabled Explorer to view hidden and protected
system files and folders as explained previously (which is what I believe to
be the case), or b) the state manager is so severely damaged that you need to
re-enable as also explained previously. Your call. You know what you have to
do which is just read and follow the scripts set out by both Noel and myself.
Until you do so there is nothing that Noel, I or anyone else can do to help
you. So once again, if doing the above is beyond your abilities then please
ask a friend to help you.

So for the very last time, why are you using DIR from DOS to look at the
contents of the _RESTORE folder rather than Explorer? Why not start from the
very beginning and follow the instructions you have been given? You never
know they might just help you with your problem.

You got in ahead of me. I think I have finally found what
you're asking for. The _restore folder shows size 3.27 GB,
9436 files and 5 folders. It has 5 subfolders (archive,
extract, logs, sfp, and temp). I can tell you what's in
each one if you care. Now (at least conceptually) I think
you want me to boot to DOS so that I can override
windows. Change the attributes of the _restore file,
rename it to oldrestore, and then boot to windows and
remove the oldrestore file. Have I got it? Now finally,
I've made a boot disk with IO.sys and command. Do I need
anything else? Does it matter that I don't have a
DSINFO.DAT file, or is that what we are trying to re-
establish? Once again, my apologies.

One other thing I should mention. Once I knew the names
of the files I was looking for, I used DIR in DOS.
Apparently Explorer is not releasing my hidden files. I
have tested this by unchecking the box 10 going into DOS
10 consecutive times. Those hidden files do not show up
unless I ask for them. Also, I have determined that I am
losing my system restore points each time I empty my
recycle bin. Hope this information is useful to you.

Judy,

You still don't appear to be able to follow instructions. :-) If you were to
only enable Explorer to view hidden and protected system files and folders you
would probably see the file DSINFO.DAT but then again it could very well be
that it is the absence of this file that is causing you your problems.

Now that we've established you have a _RESTORE folder, that it contains
thousands of files and totals 3.27GB we can hopefully move on. Out of
curiosity how much space do you have allocated to your restore archive? You
can check this as follows; Control Panel | System Properties | Performance |
File System | Hard Disk. Is the slider "greyed" out, if not how much space
does it say you have allocated? How large is the partition/drive containing
your windows folder? If less than 27GB then the state manager isn't FIFOing
(discarding) older archived files as new files are archived as the maximum
space used should never exceed 400MB or 12% of the drive where the partition
is > 4GB.

As for your boot floppy. That will suffice but since it is not a Win Me
startup disk it contains no DOS files so when it comes to using the ATTRIB
command you will have to use the copy in your windows\command folder and thus
type C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ATTRIB rather than just ATTRIB as in my earlier
instructions.

Please though don't wipe the C:\_RESTORE folder until you have read my reply
to your second post.

Judy,

Windows Explorer should have no difficulty in "releasing" your hidden files.
There is absolutely NO need to use DOS to view the contents of the C:\_RESTORE
folder. I suspect the problem is your reluctance <vbg> to followed the
instructions I posted earlier to allow Explorer to "see" such files and
folders and which for your benefit I repeat below.

For Explorer to display not only hidden files and folders but also protected
system files and folders: Whilst in Explorer - Tools | Folder Options | View
and check "Show hidden files and folders" and ALSO UNcheck "Hide protected
operating system files".

> Also, I have determined that I am
> losing my system restore points each time I empty my

Now that is good information. Each restore point is represented by an RG*.cab
file in the C:\_RESTORE\ARCHIVE folder. Can you please create some manual
checkpoints, confirm that for each an RG*.CAB file was created and then reboot
and check again for RG*.cab files. Were they all deleted? Are you using any
third party tools such as Norton to "manage" your recycle bin? If so what
since this would appear to be contributing if not directly causing you your
problems.

Hi Mike,

OK. Just to get the explorer thing out of the way, I do
move the dot and uncheck the box, and use apply. I look
again and the settings are there, and I can open the
folders and see the files (but not DSINFO.DAT). When I go
to DOS I see none of the hidden things, but as you know I
can ask for them at the command prompt. When I exit DOS
and look again, the box and circle are back to the
original settings. I've done it 10 times. Could it be I
have more problems than just the system restore and
the "missing" DSINFO.DAT file?

Now, your other questions. I created the restore points,
saw them, rebooted (as opposed to a shutdown), looked
again and none had been deleted. System performance file
system shows 4244 MB allocated to restore. My windows
partition is 34.5 GB; System Save 2 GB; 40 GB drive. I DO
have a Windows ME startup disk . I also have the boot
disk I made with the 2 files I told you about. I have the
recovery CD which came with the machine. I have the disks
to restore the machine to factory condition (i.e. format
the hard disk and reinstall everything). I have disks to
upgrade to XP on this machine (and aren't you glad I never
tried that). I have Norton 2001 and 2002. Norton 2001 is
on the machine, but I don't know if it manages the recycle
bin or not. It does internet updates and once a week runs
scans for viruses if that helps.

Thanks for the smile.

Once again Please Please PLEASE read the instructions again, and then re-read
them. Then act on them. Then re-read them again and work out that there are
TWO boxes, one to be checked AND ONE TO BE UNCHECKED. When you have done that
there MAY be some point in continuing but if not then goodbye.

Exactly. I'm right with you there. Once I found out what
the names of the files should be, I could ask for them at
the DOS prompt and they typed out. Finally, just as a
test, I changed the attributes manually at the DOS prompt
and voila they were all visible. That answers Noel's
question about why I was using DIR. I don't think I should
have been able to change attributes by dropping to DOS
from within Explorer (that's why you need a startup disk),
but that's what happened. I've also reversed the process
by dropping to DOS, changing the attributes, exiting back
to Explorer and the files still don't show either with the
boxes in the original settings or if I change them but
they DO show in DOS. These unexpected results lead me to
believe that my system is unstable in some way and the
System Restore problem was the first thing I noticed. I'm
curious as to what else is not working properly. I
actually thought that changing the 2 boxes would have
changed the attributes. Hope this information helps.

Re: System Restore Problems by Noel

Noel

Judy - Mike's PC is rather sick at present, so he's asked me to take over
until he gets back (but I'm afraid it will be patchy service until Sunday,
since It's my birthday tomorrow, and.....)

Norton 2001 and ALL versions of Norton LiveUpdate are known to have problems
with Windows ME.
I'll leave that subject alone for fear of offending the more sensitive
reader<g>, just let me say that there are AV's with smaller footprints (most
of them!), and better updaters (some of them - but none that I know create
similar problems to LiveUpdate), which work better with ME (almost all of
them!).
I personally use the free version of AVG.

AFAIK, the Hidden attribute of a file is unchanged by checking the box in
Folder Options|View - which is why the files are still invisible in DOS, and
I suspect that visiting the files in a DOS window resets the box in the View
listing.

Mike tells me that you are having problems now with the Recycle bin - and
that every time you empty the bin, SR loses all existing SR points. I can't
find this in the thread in the limited time before I go out this evening -
perhaps you could point it out, or copy/paste it to your response?
Please also go into some details about how you are emptying the bin - just
in case<g>

I'll be back in about 12 hours (hangover permitting<g>)

Some previous versios of Zone Alarm caused these problems. Try checking the

Thank's Noel. I think we're on the right track here. As
you know, when I realized I could issue DOS commands from
within Explorer (as opposed to the Start-up Disk) as well
as being unable to change attributes with the Tools View
Tab, I've concluded that my system files are somehow
corrupt or at the very least suspect and rather than keep
dealing with individual problems, I'll just restore the
whole thing. I know now that I'm missing at least one
file in my _restore folder and have no idea what else
could be missing. I can use tools and view on other ME
machines, but not mine, and on other machines I can't drop
to DOS and issue commands from within Explorer. Your
system restore corrections were quite logical, but if I'm
missing files, who knows what the results will be. And
finally, I do believe Norton is involved. A contact in my
Mensa group and I are going to do some exploring before I
restore this thing, and if I find anything useful I'll let
you know (I'm curious about the whole DOS thing). Thanks
to both you and Mike. I've learned so very much. Sorry,
this took so long, but I just kept following the
instructions and didn't realize Explorer was also involved
until I began exploring other ideas. Who knew. Hope your
birthday was terrific, and once again happy holidays.

With much appreciation,
Judy

Thanks BJ,

If you're interested, you might read this saga. But Zone
Alarm was indeed part of the problem and it's gone.
Norton is also involved, and as you can tell I've had to
work around Explorer. System Restore was simply the first
thing I noticed. What an adventure.

Judy
You're still going off at tangents!
DO NOT worry about DOS commands - Win ME doesn't use them much, and there
should be no need for them, except as 'last resort' problem solvers.
Do the SR clear/reset as described by Mike and myself, and see whether that
helps things - and let us know the results.

If you're dead-set on a reinstall, then look here
