When I try to launch system restore, I can get past the
first two screens where I tell it I want to set a restore
point, give it a name, and after that it tells me that I
need to shut down and restart the computer in order to use
system restore. I have done that several times but it
does not solve the problem. Thanks. JJ

I'm no System Restore expert but you could try rebooting into Safe Mode running
Restore from there, type "RSTRUI" (no quotes) from the Run > Dialog box if you
need to get it up and running.

Again, I'm no system restore expert, but I have learned a tad about this
problem from others on here.

Thanks to Noel Paton:

This can happen for a number of reasons. Please check the following points.

1) How big is your HD?
2) What's the allocation for System Restore set to - System
Properties|Performance|File System
3) What's the amount of space taken up by the C:\_Restore folder tree (It's
Hidden, and a System folder, so you'll need to enable viewing of these in
Folder Options)
4) Is there a WININIT.INI file in the C:\Windows folder?

Try this: Go to Start>Run, type
SCANREG /FIX
and click OK. (Note the space between the 'G' and '/'.)

Does that help?

HTH - with answers to the above we should be able to help.

JJ
This looks like the 'false wininit.ini' syndrome - try this
Start|Run
Type
SCANREG /FIX (note the space!)
and click OK - windows will reboot.
See if you can create an SR point then

Is there supposed to be a WININIT.INI folder in C:\ Windows,Noel? I don't
seem to have one and could that be the source of *my* System Restore
problems do you think?

No, you are not supposed to have a wininit.ini file in your windows folder. A
wininit.ini file is only present during certain software and driver
installations and upgrades in which case it contains instructions to be
executed the next time the system is booted after which the file is deleted.

What exactly are "your" system restore problems?

I *can* create manual checkpoints, checkpoints *may* be created after
programmes installations and *are* created after System Restore
Disble/Enable but the computer will not create them automaticlly after
idling for ' 2 minutes or more'.I have the correct version of SMGR.DLL. and
the SR cache is set at 200Mb.Task Schediuler and Public Health are
disabled.Programmes running in the background have been stripped to the
bones.I have a P4/1.7Ghz,60Gb HD partitioned 10/50 and 256mb of memory.
I have been using 'SetPoint'-'the programme MS should have included in
SR'-which creates manual checkpoints automatically at scheduled
intervals. That seems to work fine.Unfortunately it is shareware but I
*would* like to know what's wrong.Noel and Tony have been helping me but so
far to no avail.

Thanks for responding. Having been away from the NGs for a couple of weeks I
don't know what has already been covered.

If you can create manual checkpoints then the lack of automatic checkpoints is
due to one of two general reasons. Either there is no system idle time, such
as when the user is running a programs like seti@home, or because a background
application is fooling Win Me's state manager.exe into thinking that the
system is not idle although this is not in fact the case. Examples of the
latter utility include v4 of MotherBoardMonitor (but not v5), Cacheman, The
Cleaner (TCActive and TCMonitor) and Norton's System Doctor where users have
reported use of the Disk Health sensor has prevented the creation of automatic
checkpoints. NAV7 has also been reported as causing similar problems in
certain circumstances. Other users have reported similar behaviour due to
their always on cable or ADSL connection continually polling their HD and thus
giving the impression that the system is never idle.

A significant number of users report that 3.x versions of Zone Alarm also
prevent the creation of automatic checkpoints but this doesn't seem to affect
all ZA users (including myself). Similar problems have been experienced by
BlackIce users and other software firewalls have also been reported to cause
some users similar problems.

One user recently reported that B's CLIP UDF packet writing software
(http://www.bhacorp.com/products/clip/clip.html) also prevented the creation
of automatic checkpoints.

Basically you will have to do the hard work in determining what is interfering
with the operation of System Restore by stopping the various background
processes and activities that you have launching when you boot your system
until you discover which is causing you the problems. A good place to start
would be to look at any new application that you might have installed since
you are positive that System Restore was last creating automatic checkpoints.

Thanks for the advice.
I have none of those programs you mention with the exception of The Cleaner
*but* even in that TCActive and TCMonitor have always been disabled.

I suppost the only way to test this will be to turn the modem off or go
offline for an extended period.

You mentioned something earlier that I've never heard of - 'Setpoint'-"'the

Could you let us know where you got it from please? a link would do.

Here are a couple of links.Set Point is from Easy Desk Software. As far as I
can tell from the limited use I have been able to make of it so far it works
very well.Of course it is shareware.
