On a couple of occasions recently I have tried to use System Restore
when three or four restore points are shown to be available. The
restores have failed with the message "System restore failed to restore
your computer. Please try another Restore point" (wording may not be
exact). Choosing a different point had no effect.

I have Norton System Utilities which has a known problem in this area,
but I have checked the Norton feature which causes the problem and it
was disabled anyway (Disk Health sensor in System Doctor).

Does anyone have any ideas on this one?
TIA,

Al

Alec.
The Disk Doctor problem only prevents creation of automatic restore points -
it doesn't screw system Restore to this extent (AFAIK).
The usual cause for this error is not having installed the System Restore
patch (or having reinstalled ME over the top since installing the patch -
which reinstalls the broken version).
You should check the version of SMGR.DLL in your C:\Windows\System folder -
if it's not v4.90.0.3003, then you haven't installed the patch, and should
go to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q290700
and download the patch, and install it.

Why were you attempting to use SR? - post a new thread detailing your
problems, with exact error messages if appropriate, and someone will try to
help.

I read the disk doctor help on Symantec but checked just in case...
I used System restore after an abortive installation of a USB2 card.
It's now OK and functioning correctly. I don't have a current problem. I
asked the question in case I get a problem in the future. It was the
first time I'd used SR.

A search for SMGR.DLL produces 2 files:
1. C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\SMGR.DLL v4.90.0.3003
2. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SMGR.DLL v4.90.0.2533
which seems the wrong way round as I'd expects the CABS version to be
the one frome the ME CD and hence the wrong one.

According to MS Windows check my ME is up to date and all critical
updates installed.

I'll go to the link you gave and see what it does. Thanks.

Al

Noel,
I've installed the patch and SMGR.DLL now at 3003 everywhere.
I've created a new restore point with it in place.
Thanks again.

Great - you should now be 'good to go' as far as System restore is
concerned.

What probably happened was that you installed the patch, and then
reinstalled ME from the CD afterwards - which would reset the
C:\Windows\System\smgr.dll file to the original broken version. If you need
to reinstall ME again, do it from the files on the HD - using the SETUP
command in the C:\Windows\Options\CABS folder. Just remember that
reinstalling the OS is ALWAYS an option of last resort - i.e. not something
that should be tried until everything else has failed!

Good Luck

Thanks for reinstall hint. I searched the CABs on the CD and sure enough
the old smgr.dll is there. It's interesting that the download that
corrects it also updates the CABS on the HDD.

I'm happy now :-)
