I have 256MB of RAM and virtually infinite free hardrive space running Win ME. I often get low resource error messages when running only a couple of applications (typically just MSN and Quicken). I have to reboot often and still have to be exceptionally careful about using resources. ME is set to control it's own virtual memory, but I am thinking about adjusting it manually despite the warnings. Any help, please?

System Resources have nothing to do with either RAM or virtual memory or even
free hard disk space and I would certainly recommend that you continue to let
Win Me handle virtual memory. Resources here refer to two (OK three but the
third isn't as significant) 64KB stacks sued by 16 bit programs and libraries.
Their size is fixed and cannot be increased.

You might want to have a look at Jim Eshelman's pages on System Resources at
http://aumha.org/win4/a/resource.htm where he explains the differences between
resources and memory.

One way of improving resources is to limit the number of applications being
launched each time you boot your PC and instead only opening applications as
and when required. A good place to look to for advice as to which programs
need to be run at startup and those that can be safely disabled is Pacman's
site where he lists what should definitely be retained and which can be safely
removed from the startup axis
(http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm). Reducing such applications
and only starting them when required can free up significant resources.
