    - cluttered desktop My desktop is cluttered with icons. Would it be less stressful on my system if I created folders on my toolbar and moved programs to a designated folder. ie I created a folder called 'security programs' and moved all my security related links(9) to this folder. I created other folders and did the same. I vaguely remember that desktop icons take up extra memory. If I'm incorrect please advise. If it has no significant differerence then I'll go back to my original desktop.     - Restore or resetting "My picture folder" Dear Sir, In my system (windows me), In "Mypicture" folder selected the view to show as thumbnail,it was showing with picture.but I went to the properties and selected "openwith" and selected the program ACDSee to view picture, since then I am unable to view thumbnail picture in My Picture folder as well as in the opened dialogbox to insert a picture file.     - Folders not showing in left pane of Win Explorer I have only a blank pane showing when using the Folders view through the Explorer Bar (click View on menu bar then Explorer Bar then Folders--or click the Folders icon on toolbar). The other views do show (Search, Media, History, Favorites) but if I then go back to try the Folders view again, the other view (Search for example) still shows. What's up with that?     - ME's startup doesn't go further than the green screen All: A few days ago I lost the use of Win-ME, as my primary OS, the other being Windows 2000. When I startup, ME goes through the normal routine up to the green screen of Windows -- but there are no programs to chose from, no system tray, no start buttons.     - REPOST: need help Please!!! I have a ScanOffix Pro InnoScan MAG DTS-6060 Scanner. I haven't used it in a couple months and today I was trying to scan something and all I got were these lines. It would not scan my picture. It would show the square outline of where the picture was supposed to be and a faint outline of the person in the picture but the rest was all these lines. I tried scanning in black and white and got black and white lines. I just kept trying to scan and everytime I hit "Preview" it would come up a different pattern of lines and squares. It has never done this before. I uninstalled it then reinstalled it but it didn't help. It has two lights on the front and orange one and a green one the orange stays on constantly I think its the power light but the green one only comes on when you are scanning something. Well now it will start to scan (you can hear it and see the internal light start to move up) then in the middle of trying to scan all the lights both internal and external go off and then come back on but it can't scan. Maybe one out of every six times you try to scan it will actually do a full scan but all you get are teh lines that cover the entire page they are all different colors like a rainbow but you cant see anything as there are no spaces in between the lines. I scanned a photo with it a couple months ago and it looked perfect. Well I decided to take apart the scanner and see if there was anything wrong internally. I just cleaned off the glass both inside and out and then I checked the belt and it is really tight and hard to move. I figure it might be the motor not allowing the belt to turn.     - Explorer has caused an error in <unknown> Running WinME (OEM) on a Compaq Presario. Get "Explorer has caused an error in <unknown>" as soon as desktop appears after boot. Don't know what triggered this (helping a friend debug this) but the error keeps coming up repeatedly if I close the error dialog. I tried reinstall by booting from startup disk and running setup from Windows/options/cabs but the error is still there after reinstall. I tried doing windows update but get "IE has caused an error in <unknown>". Netscape says it couldn't open a socket. However I do have a good tcp/ip connection, I can ping my Linksys router with no problem and got IP address from DHCP server. So bottom line is I'm stuck with IE 5.x which won't work and since windows update is based on IE I can't bring down IE 6. What puzzles me is that I thought the reinstall would replace broken/missing files but I still get the same desktop and errors after the reinstall.     - Scandisk will not complete Can someone offer any suggestions on what I may need to do to get scandisk to complete. Have tried to run from Safemode, did not complete. I have unchecked all items from Startup from within Applications/System Tools/System Information/Software Environment/Startup Program. Then Tools>System configuration Utility>Startup tab.     - NIS-Was unable to access Internet and Outlook I have Norton IS. I have made it a habit to use LiveUpdate daily before doing anything else on the computer. Did a download at the end of last week and didn't pay attention to exactly what it was. I know it wasn't a virus definition. It may have been something called "Sym. Redirector." I've been fairly lucky with Norton until now. Whatever this was caused problems with Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. My mouse would also not move around the screen. All my other basic programs worked (Word etc.). Couldn't get to the newsgroup to ask questions (my first thought) nor to the Symantec website. I used System Restore today (which I have never had to use before) and Outlook and IE are now working. The problem now is that parts of NIS do not work. I did a virus scan just in case there were some critters lurking around. Nothing there. Before I give any more details, I have called Symantec (they don't service my version via phone anymore) and have worked my way through their articles and instructions. I have stopped for the moment before I go on with their last 2 options (the others didn't work) I wanted to see what people at the newsgroup thought or might be able to add and if anyone has had this experience. Also,maybe there is a more specific group that would be helpful I found through Sym's articles that it is not unusual to have problems with Norton after doing a SR. Great! One of the things they had me do was to use something called the "Hawking Tool". Didn't work. The next suggestion is to 1) Download the latest virus definitions using "Intelligent Updater." (It looks like I can still download via Live Update.) I don't know what to do about this because it looks like I may end up downloading the same darn thing that caused the problems in the first place. 2)Uninstall and reinstall all Symantec programs that use virus definitions. I won't be surprised if you tell me that this is what I will have to do. I've never done a Uninstall/Reinstall of a program before, but that's ok. My version is 2002 so will I have to Update everything from that time till now? Goofy question I know. Can I avoid the problem causing download? I apologize for the length of this. If there are any more questions, I can probably supply the answer. I wrote down most everything I did and what showed up on the screen when I did this today!! Thanks!     - OEM*.INF file generator About a month ago (through this forum) I was informed on how to eliminate downloading 'freezes' ...thousands of 0- KB oemxxx.inf files in the WINDOWS/INF folder. The solution worked great! But now and then when I do a download (especially a Microsoft Update), the problems comes back and I have to go through the same procedure of eliminating the 0-KB oem.inf files. Once the 0-KB oem.inf files start being produced, the only way I can stop the process is to shut down the computer. [After logging off of the internet during a download (because of a download 'freeze'), the 0-KB oem.inf files continue to be generated ...as seen at the MS-DOS prompt].     - System Un restore I have been having some crashing problems so I attempted to use system restore. I restored to 1 week earlier but the program said nothing changed. I also tried 2 weeks earlier and 6 weeks earlier............in each case the computer said nothing was changed.     - trouble with Linksys wireless card in ME I gave my college kid a Linksys wpc11 version3 - 2.4GHz - 802.11b wireless card to use in her Dell 8000 laptop running WinME. She ran the drivers via the Linksys CD. Her laptop shows the card properly configured in Device Manager, and her connection icon is lit. But she is unable to connect to the Internet. She's been through tech support (in India by the accents) with Dell, who blamed Linksys. She called Linksys who then blamed the internet server. The laptop was formerly configured to connect with her college's server via an ethernet connection. That is no longer available (out of the dorms for the summer) and we are trying to get her hooked up to one or more local wireless servers. She has gone through all the trouble shooting sets, reconfigured network neighborhood, and more. Still no connection in IE, even though the card shows a green signal The card worked in my old laptop running Win98, to connect to our home network, as well as to connect to TMobile and a wireless freenet available locally. I have a new laptop running XPHome with integrated ethernet and I get the wireless signals we are trying to access on her laptop just fine. What are we missing, since so far every tech we've talked to is passing the buck Also, on my XP machine I can choose from several connections via my wireless network connection box, she hasn't been able to find anything similar in ME. It seems like you choose one connection, and if you wish to switch to a different one you need to reconfigure and reboot. Is there another way, similar to XP, to allow her to choose between several active wireless signals without all this nonsense (assuming we can get the initial connection fixed first, LOL)???     - Boot.ini I was using already istalled Windows Me came with the PC. Then I tried to install Windows XP and then I freaked out of losing the documents already there on my PC to be transfered to the Windows XP. So I was selecting Windows Me (manually) at the start up. Then I thought I will remove the Widows XP. So I removed XP's command from the boot.ini Then everything messed up. So I modified the boot.ini as [Boot Loader] timeout=30 Default=C:\ [Operating Systems] C:\="Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition" So WindowsMe comes up as normal start up. But no Safe mode. Win Me has no System Administrator. It is not a secure operating system like
those based on NT such as Win 2K and XP.
