Well, I swapped motherboards in a buddy's system using WinME. I did
the Hkey/Localmachine/enum trick, but when I booted regularly the
first time, ME found a lot of stuff, then I installed the
motherboard's CD, then, lastly, I installed the video card CD and it's
up and running. But.........2 problems........

#1.) Device manager shows a bunch of duplicates.....(mouse, keyboard,
then a bunch of duplicates under "system devices"......like system
speaker, DMA, enumerator, etc. etc.) If I remove them, they simply
are all refound again. (tried several times now)

#2.) No audio whatsoever. It shows AC'97 loaded correctly and shows
no conflicts, but I don't even see a speaker in the clock tray and if
I remove & try to reinstall either from ME's CAB files or the mobo CD,
I still have no sound.

I've basically commited to formatting & re-installing so this is just
a last ditch effort for ny resolutions before I hit the "Y"
key.....<G>! TIA

#1 - Did you remove all duplicates in Device Manager in Safe Mode?

If not, do so - removing ALL instances of duplicated devices. Let WinMe
redetect on re-boot.

#2 - If applicable, either:-

Confirm in your BIOS that your 'on-board' sound card is enabled. (see user
handbook)

and/or

Go into Control Panel | Sounds and Multimedia\Sounds and make sure the Show
volume control on the taskbar box is checked.

and/or

Go into Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs select the Windows Setup tab and
under System tools, tick the Volume Control box.

and/or

'Remove' any/all or your sound card(s) using Device Manager in Safe Mode.
Re-boot and let WinMe re-install your sound card drivers.

Will do right now. Gonna check all those. I tried simply removing in
device manager but ME seems to take its own AC'97 drivers over the
mobo CD's provided drivers. Thanks for the quick reply, I'll let you
know as soon as I'm done what happens........(c=

Ugggh..........soooooo close!!! I deleted ALL duplicates (i.e.
originals *and* duplicates and that worked for everything except
sound! Literally everything works perfectly, just this stupid audio
conflict!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

The only thing I can figure is this..........the mobo CD shows the
filepaths of what it wants to install drivers for. For audio it
appears to be D:/Sound/823X (a VIA driver since i'ts a VIA chipset).
BUT......it keeps installing one of the other drives D:\Sound\Cmedia.
No matter how many times I try to install the 823X drives it keeps
installing "Cmedia". (the Cmedia is also AC'97 but I'm guessing not
the right one since I still don't have sound). Any other
suggestions??? Any way I can get rid of the Cmedia information off
the hardrive?? (maybe delete it out of the registry????) TIA!!!!!

The AC97 sound will not work with the WinME installed drivers (at least
never has for me) so you're on the right track. I'd go to the motherboard
mfr's website and download the sound drivers, they may be newer than what
you have. If you unzip/extract them to a folder on your hard drive, and
then go to device manager and select your sound card...properties, on the
drivers tab click 'update driver' and point it to those files, that may be
all it takes.

Do you have the option of showing the volume control in the system tray
checked? Is it grayed out? If the control is there and there's no sound,
right click it and choose open, and see if it's muted. Plug in the right
receptacle? Speaker power on and volume up? (asked from experience 8^)

I'm not sure if the drivers it's installing are wrong or not, but one thing
I've noticed about ME is that if it gets the wrong ones installed, it
declares them to be the 'right' ones and if you try to put in the right
ones, it will tell you they are not the correct drivers, so you have to
insist....just be sure they are the right ones.

Gary,

Thanks for the feedback. I think you're also thinking like I am.
I've doubled & triple checked everything (even made sure the AC97
sound was "enabled" in the bios) but no dice. When I look at "Sounds"
under ControlPanel, the box & slider at the bottom are there & checked
BUT they're greyed out. When I choose a sound to preview, it tells me
that the file cannot be played and that the sound card may be in use.
I gave up last nite & pulled an old small HD I had laying around & did
a fresh install on it (yes, I know 45 minutes of my life I'll never
get back....LOL!) and voila!! It works fine. Soooooooo, I think my
only solution to this problem is to go ahead & format & reinstall. At
least I know that'll work for sure.

I've backed up MyDocuments & AOL stuff (No, I don't use AOL, this is
actually on a buddy's computer I built for him). Any other stuff to
consider backing up before I hit the "Y" key? (c=

Still sounds like a driver issue. And the fact that the 'new temporary'
installation works, confirms that somewhere you do have the correct driver.
Try to determine exactly which driver version it is.

Back to the 'original' disk:-

Did you try removing **ALL** "Sound, video and games controllers" in Device
Manager in Safe Mode?

You could always blame aol anyway, they've caused enough trouble...8^).
Probably too late for backup suggestions, I always like to do favorites and
address book, but that's probably covered with your aol stuff backup.

Sounds like you probably have figured out the easiest way, I've done the
same thing with an extra HDD to see if it's hardware or not. Saves a lot of
wasted time on those tough ones. I once ghosted a drive to a new one and
the sound (Soundblaster) didn't work. Put in the old drive, it worked.
Ghosted it again, didn't work. Put back the old drive and copied the whole
drive from windows explorer to the new one, worked fine. I dunno why.

The AC97 sound generally seems to work fine, but I've noticed it never quite
just installs like you'd expect, though mine have always worked eventually.
