Hello:

After moving the contents of my documents folder from drive C to drive E, my
swap file really filled up and made things worse.
What can I do to remedy this situation without crashing or reducing
performance of my computer?
Details, please.

Harry.

Moving the My Documents folder has NO effect on the use of the swapfile.

How are you measuring this apparent fault?

Thank you Noel for your response.
Under Windows the SWP folder shows the amount of KB's being used, going
easily into the MB', sometimes over 100 MB.
That definitely is a burden to the memory, right?

Hello Noel:
What seems to have helped was my reinstalling the upgraded version of
Windows ME (upgraded from Windows 98SE).
That always lets me regain at least 50 MB's of space.
What's your take on that?
Harry.

Re: Swap File - Again by Noel

The Swap file on most systems will be around 100 to 200MB, and nothing to
worry about. Windows ME can quite happily work with a swapfile of up to 2GB.
What's more important, is the amount of the Swapfile that is actually in use
(many programs create space in the Swapfile for later use, but never
actually use it). To see this, use the System Monitor, and the item
'Swapfile in Use' - if it's regularly more than about 20MB, it would
indicate that you need more RAM.
For a discussion on memory management, look here
http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/memmgmt.htm

I suspect that you have other problems on your system, and it would probably
benefit from a general spring-clean.

Such problems are often caused by spyware - download AdAware from
www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

Then reboot the system

Open Windows Explorer and delete the contents of the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
(but NOT the folder itself!)
Close Windows Explorer.

Open Internet Properties (r-click on the IE icon on the desktop, and select
Properties - or open IE, and go to Tools|Internet Options)
On the General tab, click on the Delete Files button, select 'Delete
offline content', and click OK - when you get control of the system back,
click on the Settings... button, and move the slider so that the space
allocation setting is around 40MB. Click on OK(twice)

Now to the clever stuff!<g>
Open System Properties - (r-click on My Computer, and select Properties)
Click on the Performance tab, then the File System Button. Move the 'System
Restore disk space use' slider so that it shows between 200 and 400 MB
allocation (the minimum is 200MB - usually one notch above this is about the
right setting, depending on your system)
Click on OK
Click on the Virtual Memory button - and Make sure that the 'let Windows
mange...' button is selected. Click OK (twice)

Reboot again - this time to Safe Mode
Now run ScanDisk , and Defrag.

Then - just to be certain, do a Search on your system for files and folders
named '_Restore' (without the quotes) - you should find a single folder.
R-click on the icon, and select Properties.
This *should* be less than then allocation you gave System Restore above -
if not, then look here for how to fix it.
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/quiktipsr.htm

After all that, you should have a reasonably lean system - the only thing
that remains is to uninstall any programs you no longer use/need (from the
Add/Remove Programs Wizard!)

Noel, between your advice, including the "tweak" of the SYSTEM.INI File,
other peoples tips and my own attempts, I had
splendid success, gained almost 100 MB's of memory.

Thank you and everybody who helped me.

Harry.

What tweak of the system.ini file? - if you're referring to the MaxFileCache
tweak, then it should ONLY be used if you have MORE than 512MB RAM
installed.

Glad to hear you seem to have recovered a few MB of disk-space.
