Hello. My computer boots up only in Safe Mode & the Help/Support file will
not open & reads: (void)
The Geek Squad informed me to remove a recently installed program, run
System Restore (which would not restore) to no avail. I was instructed to
download the files that I wanted to keep and get back to them on
re-installation of ME.

The problem is that i cannot access my files in safe mode. The CD burner is
inop in safe mode, the floppy A drive is not responding (or i am not handling
correctly) & the 2GIG flashdrive (Geek Squad said to use) does not work in
safe mode (a per manufacturer).

Are there any step-by-step suggestions on how I can retirieve my files in
Safe Mode? Any step-by-step suggestions how I might get out of Safe Mode?

I have a Dell installed ME OS, desktop.
Called Dell and they do not carry ME product available anymore, nor the
support.
Found: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm, for a posible boot disk.

your help is truly appreciated.

Ooops! - forgot the most important bit - System Restore!.....

It's possible that you haven't installed the System Restore Patch - without
which any current restore points are just space fillers.
To check this, look for the file C:\Windows\System\SMGR.DLL - r-click on the
file, and select Properties.
What's the version number? - if it's v4.90.0.3003 then you have installed
the patch, and we have to look elsewhere for the problem
if it's v4.90.0.2533, then you need to install the patch.

To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and download
the patch for offline install
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q290700
Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same time,
clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and
creating a single new one.
You should then reset the maximum allocation for SR by going to the
adjustment slider at System Properties | Performance | File System | Hard
Disk - most people find that 200-400MB is quite sufficient for most
purposes, unless installing/uninstalling large applications such as Office.

Look here for help with Help
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/HSfails.htm

CD support has never been available in Win9x in Safe Mode - which the 'Geek
Squad' should have known - and AFAIK, neither is USB supported in Safe Mode

Fixing your Help system may well repair the system enough to cure the Safe
Mode boot - if not, then open Device Manager, and look in there for
duplicate entries - list them and post back

Surely you don't expect someone or something that calls itself "Geek

WOT??? You haven't heard of the infamous *Geek Squad*???

Best Buy (of US origin) now has a passel (passle?) of trained techs
(oxymoron) who will come to your aid or your house and so on and fix
everything and anything in sight.

So picture the clueless one I spoke to a year or so ago, who stupidly
assumed that because I was over 40, he could diagnose my UNSEEN computer
as being riddled with viruses!! MOI? Auntie Virus??

He is now in a home for the mentally disturbed (challenged?)....I nailed
his hide to the wall with a rather blistering verbal attack.....snicker.
The other Geeks ran for cover. I love doing that to young wannabee
geeks when they assume I know nada about computers. LOL.

Cheers....Auntie Virus

Not to worry. I'm a bit surprised that Joan's arrived so quickly as I
didn't put either package in the post until after 5pm last night. Joan's
did have two stamps against your one but then again Joan's or rather
Kelly's package did contain four items rather than one.

Hello, Noel. I visited: http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/HSfails.htm, to
no avail. Attempted to Extract/Replace a Protected File in Windows ME (as
found in Microsoft Help files). The path I followed was as instructed:
Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Info: a Help & Support
window opened that (again) read:" Sorry, wrong option (null)."

As next requested, I am listing ALL duplicate entries found in our Device
Manager. Disk Drive: (2) Apple iPod.
SBP2: (4) SBP2 Compliant IEEEE 1394 device
Sound, video, game devices: (2) Microsoft Streaming Tee/Sink-to-Sink Coverter
Storage Device: (2) IEEEE 1394 Disk
System Devices: (8) ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering

Above are all the duplicated info in the device manager.

As far as my poor experience with the Geek Squad goes, I am embarrassed & as
you can probably tell - unexperienced.

I hope that this site and your hands-on expertise can help me out of this.
Looking forward to hearing from you all.

There's no reason why you shouldn't check the patch status, and install it
if necessary, while in Safe mode -exactly the same procedures apply.

Re: Stuck in Safe Mode by Noel

I'm not sure what you mean - 'to no avail' - does that mean that you tried
all the fixes, but nothing worked, or that you didn't understand the
details?

What file were you attempting to extract and replace?? - why? The correct
tool to use for file extraction in ME is in MSCONFIG, rather than in System
Information - Start | Run , and and type 'MSCONFIG' without the quotes -
click OK..... then click on the Extract File button on the General tab

Details please!

Hmmmm - I wonder....
Are you sure you're in Safe Mode?
Are the words Safe Mode in all four corners of the screen when you're in
Windows - and do you have H&S open every boot (which then fails, as we
know)??
If not, then you are NOT in Safe Mode - just in VGA graphics mode, which
looks very similar. You need to deliberately boot to Safe Mode, and then
open device Manager - Remove ALL Graphics Adapters and ALL Monitors. Reboot
to Normal Mode and allow Windows to reinstall required drivers.

Re: Stuck in Safe Mode by jana

Hello, Noel: I tried only one of the fixes on the supplied page. The computer
that is stuck in Safe Mode does not allow internet access so I cannot
download patches or zip files.

The following instructions were found on the link you provided. I thought it
may be a path where i could fix the H&S.
Attempted to Extract/Replace a Protected File in Windows ME (as
found in Microsoft Help files). The path I followed was as instructed:
Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Info: a Help & Support
window opened that (again) read:" Sorry, wrong option (null)."

I too was hoping to find another path in accessing the H&S files - to no
avail (with no change). I am thinking I did not understand what you had
suggested me to try to do.

Yes, Noel. I can verify we are in Safe Mode. Did I send the duplicated
Device Manager info that you had requested in a way that it is understandable?

Are you suggesting that I: Remove ALL Graphics Adapters and ALL Monitors.
Which items are these or where are they listed in the Device Manager?

Thanks again.--
jana

You can download patches and zip files on any machine, and transfer them to
the affected machine on Floppy disk

Re: Stuck in Safe Mode by jana

Hello.
We are starting to untangle things now and finally found a path to access
help/support file to get to the troubleshooting help section concerning safe
mode.

I accessed the startup registry and starting closing things one-by-one and
rebooting until i was able to access the help/support files in ME. it was a
time consuming fluke guess fix on my part, but it seemed to have worked. The
help files confirmed that the start-up registry was the root of the "stuck in
safe mode" problem and gave step by step instructions on which start-up items
to close so that i could access my files in ME.

I wanted to thank you, Noel. Especially for your patience with a novice
like myself. Your suggestions and website link were instrumental in gettting
us "unstuck."

all the best
