How could that happen, Mart?
I'll go fix it.
The "uninstall" alredy proved unsuccessful..
Didn't expect you to answer, but rather someone else, who might have an
idea. I am simply exploring "all" my options, before I make any "drastic"
decision(s) and why shouldn't I? My search has shown, there were others
along the way with exactly the same problem.
Has nothing whatsoever to do with "deja vu", more with a term like "asta la
vista" or whatever.
Everything else shows and is perfect on this machine and there has to be an
answer to my question, only it may be found in a different place.
One more "little" thing: where can I go or turn to, to have my registry
examined and, if neccessary, fixed?
Thanks.

Harry.

P.S.: Just discovered my News Sending Format is set for "Plain Text".
Now What?

Yeah - Thanks a bunch Harry!

> The "uninstall" alredy proved unsuccessful..

But did you try it again and also uninstall ALL the Iomega (Ioware)
application(s) in Add/Remove Programs?

I thought Shane had also suggested that, in one of his earlier posts.

If you made a pig's ear of the uninstall, re-install it and immediately
uninstall it again - it might just clear any remnants in the registry.

BTW - I also thought you'd pulled the Zip drive - Why have you got it
listed again as the B: drive.

On the 'Format' menu in the 'New Post' window, have you got the 'dot' set to
Rich Text (HTML) or Plain Text? Should be Plain Text.

While I was away, I was "working hard" on your advice, Mart.
After completing the maneuver, I had lost workability of the Zip drive also.
There are 2 jumper settings for the drive to be set as "slave", one with the
jumper in the middle and the other with none at all.. When the jumper was
applied, the drive registered as Floppy (B:) and without as Removable Disk
(F:), which it is now. It is not supposed to be a Floppy drive, but rather
SCSI, I believe and it was that way until it changed along the way to my own
amazement, but it worked and I wasn't concerned.
Yet at the moment my zip drive is not readable either, asking me to format
with a disk inserted, just as does the Compact Disk drive.
When I was booting with the zip drive disconnected, my BIOS informed me of
"Hard Disk Failure" and continuing, I got this message:
"Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM: Failure.
Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and press Enter."
Right now these drives are listed in "My Computer":
3 1/2 Floppy (A:)
Local Disk (C:)
Local Disk (D:)
Local Disk (E:)
Removable Disk (F:)
Compact Disk (G:)
The strange part is, that everything is working properly in Device Manager.
I did find an Iomega.vxd file and three others in (C:), the active partition
and sent it to the recycle bin. There are quite a few left on (D:), the
extended DOS partition, should all of those be deleted also?
So far the contents of (D:) didn't have any effect on (C:).
With everything else working beautifully, this is merely half a computer.
I am just about ready for the 40-mile trip, or to start from scratch with
WinXP. Couldn't really blame you, if you didn't answer, Mart.

OK Harry, let's try - in-line - a bit at a time.

Probably ATAPI/IDE, but not sure with your model of Zip drive. I think yours
is the one Mike alluded to in one of his replies (having the ability to be
recognised as a B: drive) but I can't confirm.

Keeping it as the 'Removable F' - or better still re-desinating it as the Z:
(for Zip) in DevMan seems good to me. That way, you can re-designate your
Compact Disk G: to the 're-claimed' F: if you so wish.

> I believe and it was that way until it changed along the way to my own

Fair enough.

Had you re-installed your IOMEGA software? For the moment, be sure that ALL
Iomega software is uninstalled

Did you remember to reconfigure your BIOS to take into account the changes
in IDE drives etc.?

Which seem correct from here

Not sure why you have so many copies of this file scattered everywhere -
nor, therefore what else you've got which shouldn't be on your PC

> So far the contents of (D:) didn't have any effect on (C:).

Nor should they, but I don't know what you are implying.

Well, that's a matter of opinion <g>

WinXP on your current box?? Are you sure it can be supported?

Maybe the 40 mile trip for a second (expert) opinion, first.

No problem Harry - but from here, it looks as if you've been continually
digging yourself in deeper. Over quite a long period too!

Thanks for the reply, Mart.
I'm going to call a 'time out', to give especially you, everyone else and
myself a break from this 'disaster'. I use (C:) for the OS to facilitate
easy formatting and keep the 'stuff' I want to have reference to on (D:).
When talking about WinXP, I mean a new machine, because something else
besides merely software is causing the problems here, just can't figure out
what. A good solution seems to be to replace the hard drive, while keeping
the old one for eventual reference, but I like the idea of a new, more
powerful motherboard better.
"Take five" and some.

Harry.

A better one would be fdisk and format it back to a single C: partition and
undertake a completely fresh 'clean install' - but let's not even go there.

However I can certainly warm to the idea of a new XP machine. You'll wonder
what kept you.

AND - I can now go to bed and have full night's sleep without worrying about
your WinMe machine.

FF working fine.....but I see there is yet another update. Probably a
security one. Will have to check and see.

Hi, Heather,

Yep, Mart gets the virtual Medal of Honor, which is awarded for "action
above and beyond the call of duty." :)

The latest FF update is a security and stability update. Use the update
function within FF to update rather than reinstalling. The update is
small (~515 KB) and auto-update works well.

I knew you Yanks would have the appropriate Medal for Mart. (Honour
has a 'u' in the UK and Canada, btw.....lol) Come to think of it, the
US is the only country that spells all those words wrong. Guess we will
never convince you of that tho. 8-))

FF is now patched and it went quite smoothly. I haven't done it from
within before, usually did it when the notice flew up in my face. I
notice it checked extensions as a second thing. Maybe one of these
days, we will get Mart trying it out. (not bloody likely, Mart is
muttering, lol)

Thanks, Heather

Thanks for the sentiments guys - but not quite deserved I'm afraid. It was
after all, a "WinMe NG - Team Effort" - but more to the point and in the
cold light of day, Harry has still won. It's not fixed yet!

Remember Harry's sinister warning :-

Notice he didn't say to keep it to recover data, but "for eventual
reference" What for Harry - To haunt us? Be afraid guys, be very afraid!

Yes, it was a Team Effort, but you were the Captain!! And I look at it
the opposite way.....Harry lost. He hasn't fixed up what he messed
up.....so no winner there. 8-))

Nah....Harry didn't mean what he said......or for that matter he doesn't
say what he means either. As evidenced by this last long saga (drives,
drivers, software, hardware, et al used interchangeably most of the
time).

Mart:

I am glad everyone is feeling better, which is not what I can say for
myself, but then why should that matter?
As long as we keep this particular NG alive and "well".
Once the official support for WinME ceases, we can always form a parent
relationship with WinXP.
Did I forget the mention to thank everyone for their support?
If so, I'm doing it here.

Harry.

That's only because you have it set for US spelling.....mine is set for
Canadian, lol. FWIW, all of our print media have to spell words the
American way, so it does tend to get a bit confusing. When I used to
write for the newspapers, I would get chastised for using our spellings.
