When I boot up my computer, it doesn't get past the title
screen for Windows ME. It does not even get to the
desktop. I have tried switching it to safe mode and the
same thing happens. It says
"Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2
%1: %2"
What can I do? Is there a way I can get to a dos prompt
or to my desktop?

Go to that site. Look for a similar problem as yours and the cure.

Jay:
Sounds like your wininit.exe file has gone bad. There are
a number of ways you could resolve this but under your
circumstance I think it would be best to copy a good
wininit.exe file into your Windows directory.

1. Copy a good wininit.exe file to a floopy disc.
2. Boot to a:\ (use Boot disc)
3. Copy file to windows directory. (copy
a:\wininit.exe c:\windows)
4. Reboot
