    - bootup hangs on "updating configuration files" I have just installed a critical update from Microsoft (something about=20 Active X 9.0, I think) and now my computer will not boot Win ME. I=20 have left it for over 6 hours with a message on the screeen: "Please = wait=20 while setup updated your configuration files. This may take a few=20 minutes..."     - CD-Writer? This just isn't my day! I was burning some jpeg files to a CD, put a CD in the drive & clicked on create CD, I got a message asking for a CD with enough room etc. or something to that effect, so instead of putting a different CD in I went ahead & clicked on re-try. Didn't think it was downloading so I clicked on cancel. Now the CD tray will not open. I re-booted & no luck. I don't know what else to do so can someone please help?     - booting problems I have a dell notebook with windows ME, when turning the computer on I am getting a message: "cannot load file %1 from file %2" the message repeats itself indefinetly. I am not able to get into safe mode menu, however I can get to drive C with a bootable floppy disk. I tried system restore but it doesnt save the problem.     - Somebody is spoofing I recently received five email rejects from AOL that seem to have originated from my system and OE at first glance. However, the versions for OE and OLE do not match my systems. The addressees are not in any address book on my system. There are (according to current virus scanners and some other email related utilities) no applications or trojans on my system that can cause such a thing. What is even more interesting is that I currently do not normally send mail via MSN, due to my cable IP's port blocking. (A very small number of messages were sent out thru the MSN hotmail selection during a recent pop3/passport outage earlier in the week. ) The cable IP mail server does not appear in the header information. It looks like someone sent stuff to AOL users, spoofed my address and the MSN mail server. Is anyone else having this sort of problem? Or, is this (I hope) an isolated incident.     - security update This morning I got an e-mail supposedly from microsoft telling me to download the attached security update but even to there was an attachment symbol there was no attachment, just instructions how to download it. It was supposed to be the Aug 1st cumulative patch. I went directly to the Microsoft site and it says I have all the updates available. None are Aug 1st. Should I just delete the e-mail?     - passwords I want to have the startup process include a request for a password. I have the computer connected to a router for a small network. When I start the computer, it doesn' ask for a password but goes directly to the normal desktop display. I have to then log-off and back on to get the password screen to come up and which then allow access to the network.     - WidowsME Crashing when computer is idle & previous posts. HELP Hi I posted general crashing problems re ME about 10 days ago. I get a whole variety of error messages, ranging from page faults to general protection errors. As I wrote before, I have performed a clean install (about 6 times on my friends computer). The installation gave no error messages and seemed fine. I think people found it difficult to help me because of the lack of any pattern in the error messages. After the last clean install, ME crashed even before I had chance to install the chipset drivers & video drivers. I have now noticed a slight pattern. Although the computer will crash at any time, I have noticed that it crashes when left idle with just the desktop on. A typical error message at this point is: Error OE: 0028 : 0070042B. I have checked the memory with DocMemory and also checked that the module is seated securely in its socket. I followed up the one suggestion that was made in this N/G and ran the computer from the EBD and left the help files on screen to see whether it was an overheating problem. It did not crash. It will however crash when started in Safe Mode. Selective start-up is of no help. All devices are working OK in device manager and no problem devices are shown in system inf. I have the standby and power down settings, set to never in windows and set to user defined in the BIOS. I just cant think of anything else to try in order to get this computer working for my friend.     - Windows ME won't shut down I can't get my Windows ME to shut down. I get all the way to the blank screen, but the system continues to chug away, and will never turn off.
