I use Windows ME and often my computer starts in safe mode
and I have great trouble to get a normal bootup. When I do
get a normal boot up, at times while working, the computer
will throw itself into safe mode.
I don't use Norton Anti-virus, and haven't setup a restore
point.
Can anyone help with this one?

thanks

Jim

The system cannot just 'throw itself into Safe Mode' to do that it would
have to reboot.
Do you mean that, or do you mean that the screen just appears to go the
16-colour 640x480 mode??

If the latter, then it's probably your Video card on the blink. It may just
be a loose connection, or it may be more serious.

If the former the system is rebooting, then look at the fans on the system
and make sure that they're turning freely, and that the vents and fans
aren't clogged with dust-bunnies. - If that doesn't stop it then you need to
take the machine to a shop to get it checked over electrically.

I'll check those things you mentioned. It does seems to
throw to safe mode without rebooting. The screen size does
change to what i guess is 640x480 and the blue desktop
goes to white and something comes up on the screen that is
difficult to read, but starts with ACTIVE DESKTOP....

That's Active Desktop throwing a wobbly - I won't have it running on any
Win9x machine I touch, as it uses valuable resources, and processor time,
for little advantage.
You can disable that by r-clicking on the desktop and de-select Show Web
Content. You can then enter Display Properties and set up new (static)
backgrounds, etc.
