I am having significant problems in running my computer, which has Windows Me
installed and works on a Celeron chip. Every time I start my computer, the
scan drive starts (probably because the last time the computer was not shut
properly) but then it never completes the scanning even after 30-40 minutes.
Finally, I cancel it and then it shows me the Windows screen. At this time,
as the desktop screen is getting fully loaded, I can move my mouse but within
30-40 seconds, the mouse is immobile. I can't do anything either with the key
board or the mouse. Even Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work, so I have to only take
switch off the power to restart the computer. Can anyone tell me what I can
do about this? I also ran Spybot and Adaware when I was once able to get to
it very quickly before the mouse and keyboard hung up. Any advice is
appreciated. Thanks.

Boot into Safe Mode. This will avoid loading additional programs into
memory that could be interfering with the Scandisk; Scandisk doesn't like to
be interrupted with changes to the harddrive as it scans. But before you
start anything else.. and since you report a mouse problem and other
lockups, let the computer "settle down" for a few minutes before you do
anything else. Maybe just move the mouse around a bit, look at a directory
of files for example - just basic stuff. If you continue to get lockups..
you might have to seriously consider digging deeper at a hardware problem
(could be mouse, memory, anything!) before you can safely do anything else
further.

If all seems to be operating smoothly with and no lockups for say atleast 10
minutes, proceed with a DiskClean up first. Then ideally, I would
recommend you do a Defrag before you do a Scandisk (Scandisk would finish
faster on a defragmented drive)... but not knowing your CPU speed, or how
long it has been before you did any basic harddrive maintenance, just skip
the defrag for now and start Scandisk. Let it run, and don't interrupt the
process with other activities on the computer.

Hope this helps!
