When I boot I get a couple of error messages related
to "Main" and winlog. I think the "main" is an NAV file
Nmain but not sure. At any rate the normal icons on the
launch bar and system tray appear but will not repond to a
click. Applications that are opened do not appear in the
task bar and the Start button will not function. The
broadband cable signal does not load even though the
signal icon in the system does switch from red to blue
(good connection)before the freeze. The time comes up
properly on boot but then stops of course when the system
tray freezes. Othedrwise everything above the bottom of
the monitor works fine. I have tried to uninstall NAV as
that is usually the root of all problems but it will not
uninstall due to an "integrater" error. I have even tried
to uninstall in safe mode. I tried to upgrade the NAV in
hope of being able to uninstall it but the install hangs
about half way through. At one point while ending tasks
from the task manager the Start button did respond for a
moment as did icons that had been clicked on in the launch
bar. This was short lived and resulted in a system
crash. I have re-installed ME but that had no effect. I
am prepared to do a clean install as all the data has been
backed-up. Is this my best bet or is there another fix?
Can I do a clean install off of an ME Upgrade disk or does
it have to be the OEM Dell disk that has been misplaced
(this is my kid's machine). Where can I find
instructions on the best way to go about a clean install?
I have start-up disks from both this machine and another
machine running ME.

Thanks and sorry for the long rant.

Eric,

If you have the Windows ME upgrade instead of the "full"
version(like the one on your Dell OEM CD), you'll need to
have your previous Windows CD, because the Upgrade
Compliance Check asks you to show proof of ownership of an
earlier version of Windows. You don't have to install the
older version, but you have to insert the disk to show the
Setup program that you have it. The Windows 95 or Windows
98/SE CD or Windows 95 floppy disks will work as "proof".

Maybe you have a previous version lying around somewhere
from an older computer?

Best of luck....

Charissa

First off what you need is to make sure you still have the KEY for the
Windows ME Upgrade disk
Then in windows Control Panel open Add/Remove Programs
Click on the last tab at the top that is were you can make a bootable floppy
disk
Once you have made the floppy disk leave it in the A: drive and reboot to
make sure it is operational
before attempting to format and reinstall try
type C: <enter> that will put you on the C drive
then type SCANDISK AUTOFIX <enter>
that will scan your hard drive for any errors such as lost info or fragments
once done scanning remove floppy and try rebooting normal
with any luck this might fix your problem

If that don't work reinsert floppy and reboot as before using CD-rom support
once again type C: <enter>
SCANREG FIX <enter>
this will scan your windows program registry and may also fix some errors
once done try to reboot without floppy disk again

One other option is
if you can click the START button from either SAFE MORE or REGULAR MODE
click START
then click RUN
in the box type MSCONFIG
click OK
this will open the CONFIGURATIONS program for WINDOWS
click on the option that says
SELECTIVE STARTUP
then remove the CHECK from
STARTUP GROUPS
click OK
YES to reboot

this will load windows with minimal programs loading similar to safe mode
from there if you got the NAV install disk you can attempt to reinstall
then try to remove if you still wish or try to reboot with the new
installation and maybe it'll work right now

once all seems operations return to
START
RUN
MSCONFIG
this time click the top option
NORMAL MODE
OK
YES to reboot

if all else fails continue below for a CLEAN install of WINDOWS ME ( For a
clean install you will need at least another copy of an older upgrade disk
such as UPGRADE 95 OR UPGRADE 98 it is not necessary to have installed but
during the ME UPGRADE installation it will request you to insert the disk to
approve upgrading. when you get to the section for UPGRADE APPROVAL you'll
need to remove your ME UPGRADE disk and insert the previous version disk 95
or 98. Browse to the cd-rom of the upgrade disk click ok allow verification
then reinsert ME disk)

When computer reboots it will give you 3-4 options of how to load the system
Use the option that loads drivers for CD-rom support
Once your system is fully loaded and your back at the A: prompt you will
need to type
FORMAT C: <enter>
YES to delete all files on non-removable disk
That will ERASE EVERYTHING on your C: drive allowing a clean install
from there all you should need to do is insert your Windows ME upgrade disk
in your CD-ROM
If your CD-ROM is normally D: now it'll be E:
so type E: <enter>
then Type Setup <enter>
Installation should be on it's way just follow on screen directions
GOOD LUCK
