    - Shut-down problems I have an intermittent, but fairly frequent, problem on my computer. When I try to shut down the screen goes blank but the hard drive keeps running. I have to press the restart button and then the computer restarts and goes through the ScanDisk procedure. I can then close down with no problems. Indicators that I am likely to experience this are that I can download emails using Microsoft Outlook, but I can't access the Internet using the browser.     - Restore Function When attempting to restore to a previous restore point because my computer was slow and freezing frequently, the computer (can you believe it?!) froze in the middle of the restore process. Now I really have a mess. Half my programs don't work any more, my computer doesn't recognize that I even have a sound card, my CD burner won't work, the DVD player won't function at all, plus many other issues. Oh, yeah!     - Millenium Mayhem Ok, I know that ME is very weak.....to put i simply. I've been having problems with ME on my HP. When we bought our computer it came with ME preinstalled. Since then, we have had nothing but problems with it....our computer is very unstable. Right now, it seems stable, but at anytime, for any given reason, it could freeze on us..a green bar displays at the top of the screen.....sometimes ctrl+alt+delete will work, other times it won't. I uninstalled all software that I added since we reinstalled ME...thinking it was a software conflict. Unfortunately, it still locks up on us and sometimes will just simply reboot itself out of nowhere. Can anyone tell me what can be done, outside of upgrading to XP to fix this problem.     - computer shutting down by itself I hope this is the right group to possibly help me. If not, kindly direct me to the correct place to post my problem: A few days ago I turned on my Windows ME pc, it booted up, but while I was out of the room, it turned itself off. It would not turn back on with the Start button on the tower, but once I unplugged AND plugged the tower back in, the green light next to the plug in the back of the tower re-lit, and then I was able to turn on the pc as normal by pushing the start button. No problems for a few days. Today it did it again. I re-set the pc (unplugged/plugged back in; greeet light back on) and turned it on. I got to my desk top, all icons loaded, and I went into a program (Netscape). Before it had a chance to load, the pc blinked off. Again, I re-set the pc and turned it on. Desktop loaded. All icons loaded. I went into WordPerfect, recalled a doc, and started typing. PC clicked off. I waited a few minutes. Re-set the pc. Turned it on. It blinked off while it was still booting/loading desktop icons. Then I turned on the pc and F8'd it. Left it in that mode to see what would happen, and within two minutes, pc clicked off. Came back a few hours later. Re-set pc. Turned it on. This time, I did NOT click the button to 'Restore my Active Desktop' AND I let the ScanDisk run. My ScanDisk hasn't worked well in yrs, so I've been using a different Scan/Defrag problem other than the one that came with the pc. Anyway, I let it run. It cycled through a few times, but it DID complete the 'basic' Scan. Now the pc has been working fine for hours. I still have not restored my active desktop, but did back-up all my files in case this problem means my hd is failing? My system is a Hewlet Packard. Windows ME. Tower model Pavillion 7845. The hd is less than 25% full. The fan IS going. I checked. In the yrs I've had this pc, whenever it's frozen (very INFREQUENTLY), I've had the same problem where I couldn't get the pc to do anything until I unplugged the Tower. But until this week, it had NEVER turned itself off. I have AVG doing a daily anti-virus scan. I almost NEVER dl anything nor open ANY attachments. I doubt it's a virus. AVG is updated automatically. I use Executive Software Diskkeeper than runs a slight scan every day and a FULL scan weekly. My hd has never been over 1% fragged. Any suggestions? I'm really computer illiterate when it comes to problems like this. Do you think it's a software or hardware problem, and if hardware, what do you suggest? Also, what type of place do you suggest I call for repair? I've recently moved to KY and don't know any good places for repair as I did back in NJ. The pc is out of its 3-yr warranty. I've experienced NO other problems with this pc, and I bought it new. ANY help/suggestions would be MUCH appreciated.     - Modem Problems? I keep getting disconnected after a few minutes of being on the internet. It is preceeded by a distorted sound in my PC.     - Can't boot up in safe mode Hi, To solve another problem, it's been suggested that I try to boot up in 'safe mode'. When I try the Start, Restart and press CTRL, or F8 or F5 or Shift F5 I can't seem to get the computer (Dell Dimension 4100 Pentium III) to begin life in the 'safe mode'.     - URGENT - big problem Ok, this is going to take a while to explain, but basically my dad deleted windows. Using MS-DOS he ran the 'del *.*' command (or something similar) accidentaly in the C:\WINDOWS directory. Obviously not everything was deleted as some file are protected I think. After a while the computer began to hang and eventually it crashed. OK. When we tried booting up normally, we got a message saying something like 'Cannot find SYSTEM.INI. Bott with Emergengy Boot Disk and type SCANREG /RESTORE'. In safe mode we would get a message about a file called 'IFSHLP.SYS' missing. Next I created a boot disk (downloaded from the internet through my 98SE) for WinME, and used this to do the 'SCANREG /RESTORE' This did not affect the way safe mode failed but when the computer booted up normally we would get a message not only complaining about IFSHLP.SYS but also DISPLAY.SYS. Using the boot disk again I copied the IFSHLP.SYS from my Win98SE to the ME as a guess. This worked! The computer would now boot up in safe mode and in normal mode (but in normal mode it would still complain about DISPLAY.SYS). I did try copying DISPLAY.SYS from the 98, but the ME didnt like this. (something about an old version of ms- dos i think) But there are more problems, some big, some small. Our sound no longer works, the mouse drivers don't work, important stuff like RUNDLL32.EXE is missing (and to my sister's dispair their is no minesweeper). There are many files like RUNDLL32.EXE that I would think of as important, but obviously not protected. There is no way I can copy all of these files (from the 98) and hope that they work. We do not have a Windows ME CD apparently to reinstall windows, all we have is a 'Recovery Disk' (floppy disk) (this works as a boot disk, wipes hard drive clean and reinstalls windows to factory settings from a hidden partion on the HD) The good thing is our wireless network is working so we can back thing up to our other PC, but as I wasnt the one who set up the network I dont think I can repeat it when we reset the pc using the recovery disk. One thing I did think of, but I'm not so sure about is System Restore. Just before my dad messed up i installed WMP9Series which said it was creating a system restore point. I'm not quite sure how it works but i don't think it will recover the lost files. What I did think was that maybe because it recovers the settings of your PC (im not sure about this) maybe I can backup the system restore point, do a Recovery, reinstall software, and then use the System Restore to reconfigure the network. As I said I'm not sure how that works, so anyone who can help with a way of reinstalling WinME without a CD and without wiping HD clean using a recovery is appreciated. Or anyways to backup my network settings before wiping hardrive clean and then recovering these settings (I have a CD/RW drive if it is big to back up). Also maybe you know how to just re-extract the stuff from the CAB files in C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS but this might not fix everything (esp. cos the only way I can get my sound drivers is from the recovery disk). This may be a file from a program that you deleted, but the deletion did not
remove the call for it. Do a search for the file in registry and delete it.
Also, look for it in the system.ini, win.ini, config.sys and autoexec.bat
files.
