The Problems of Registry Cleaners
Hello:
As was discussed in a recent thread here, registry cleaners can do more harm
than good.
There are 2 recent articles on this topic in the Usenet group
"microsoft.public.windowsxp.general" , under the thread subjects of "Which
Registry Cleaner" and "reg cleaners". Both reflected the recent postings in
this newsgroup to avoid registry cleaners altogether. One post referenced an
interesting forum thread at: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 , which
discussed the many problems that such utilities can cause.
FYI.

Slow XP Computer
Most of us have a slow XP computer. We bought it recently, and have
done nothing in the way of keeping it cleaned. We have bigger hard
drives, so we store more stuff. And the more stuff we store, the
larger the chance is we are getting bogged down. And since we are
always deleting files, creating new files, installing software, and
uninstalling software, we are going to have some issues where the
computer gets overloaded with the data on it, and the result is a slow
XP computer.
Good news, though! There is a simple fix. But before I tell you about
it, let me go over some of the typical solutions you may hear.
Update the Windows system: You should do this. But this does not cause
the slowness. It just helps protect you from security issues.
You have a virus: OK, this could be the cause. But most likely it is
not. You should have an antivirus software installed already. If not,
go do it. Viruses could get into the computer, and start launching
programs and attacks from within your computer, which in turn would
slow it down. But this would be very rare. This will not cause the
slow XP computer....

Routers
I'm thinking of changing from wired to wireless and would like some
clarification from the experts in the NG. Currently I have a Desktop
connected by wire in an Office and a laptop connected by wire in another
room. A new laptop is replacing the old laptop but because it has 802.11
b,g,n, I'm thinking of going wireless and when I say that I mean the Desktop
would probably remained "wired" but the laptop would go wireless.
From what I understand I should purchase an "N' Router but these vary
significantly in price. So I'm looking for input in terms of what I should
be considering. Specifically, we are connected via cable with download
speeds up to 8 Mbps. The "G" series Routers vary with speeds up to 54 Mbps
while the "N" series Routers vary with speeds up to 300 Mbps.
If my connection only allows up to 8 Mbps, why is any of the above router
speeds important? As usual I would appreciate any feedback that would
enlighten me on this subject.

WU v4 for WinMe
For those who need to know - and are still interested - the Windows Updates
for WinMe are still currently available at the MS WinMe WU site, in spite of
being out of Support by some 18 months.
Just did a Clean Install (failed HDD) and all 10+ Critical Updates/Service
Packs and 45+ WinMe updates (inc. some 34 language fixes) are there. Using
broadband, it wasn't very much slower than using the MS Security CD (2004)
and all (seemingly) installed in their correct sequence.
Let's hope that MS keep them available for a few more years yet. It would be
a shame to pull them for the sake of a few hundred MB or so of web space.
Have noticed also that the KB articles for WinMe have recently been pruned
somewhat, but at least support is still there. Thanks MS - please don't
abandon us altogether.

ifsmgr.vxd / installing file systems...
Anyone had experience interchanging/cobbling together NT file systems
or HP file system(s) on NT4s, win9X, winME, NT5, win2K XP etc?
Do windows file system managers at some point operate with COM? (I
doubt that win95 did but the others might?)
I know a little of Partition Magic as I have version (7) which I hear
is now OBE. I am hoping to find something I can control from a C/C++

Any information along these lines, links and such, would be much
appreciated.

IE Caution = eBay Toolbar + Ssdpsrv
Just a note with a caution about eBay toolbar.
I find that blocking Ssdpsrv service to eBay often puts my winME 1.1
GHZ Athlon (Sempron?) into a kernel processing loop which is a real
drag on the system.
The Process Viewer Application that came ages ago with MS VC 4 will
easily kill this eBay service and fix the problem until the next
Internet Explorer session is started. I use ie6.0.

Ripping Audio CD Problems
I've been trying to find a way/software to rip some CDs.
The only thing I've accomplished so far is to get myself
wrapped around the axle so tightly that a rabid feeling
started coming over me. So.....I unclenched my teeth, wiped
the foam from my mouth and decided to come dip into this
fountain of knowledge. And yes, I'm probably one of the
last five people in the universe that is still using Windows
ME (and proud of it podner). Enough frivolity, on to the
serious stuff.
I have downloaded various programs that advertise they will
rip CDs and will work with Windows ME. The programs are:
CDex
Express Rip
WinAmp
dBpoweramp Music Converter
Exact Audio Copy
All of them except Exact Audio Copy did not show/list my
CD-RW drive nor
my CD-R drive.
Exact Audio Copy although installed would not even open. It
just gave error message
"The ASPI interface could not be initialized correctly!
(Error E8h) (No host adapters found)"
I started Googling and did not find anything specifically
talking about ME yet there are quite a number of problems
with "Rippers" failing to detect drives. A lot of proposed
fixes talked about ASPI layers (yeah, like I understood that
<bg>) and that WNASPI32.DLL needed to be installed or
updated. Most of the problems being reported were by folks
running XP (not unexpected as most of the world is on XP).
My WNASPI32.DLL in Windows\System folder was Version 4.71.1
so I downloaded and installed Version 4.71.2 but that didn't
help.
Now I'm done with my whimpering. Are any of you who use ME
doing any "ripping"?
What 'Ripper" do you use? After reading my incoherent
whining, any scientific guesses as to how my problems can be
corrected so I can become a rip-roarin' buckaroo?
Thanks and Merry 9 Days Til Christmas.

advice about ripping pants!" Tag: Spywareblaster Update, 12/24/07 Tag: 292739
Mail Merge - Blank Labels
It's that time of year when I look to do all my Christmas card addresses on
labels. The last few years it has worked very well. Since then I've obviously
downloaded an upgrade - which doesn't seem to work as well.
I follow the instructions to the letter. Having selected my addresses,
sortted the layout and then clicked on merge, just one address appears on one
label - nothing anywhere else. The selected data is there somewhere - if I
click the arrow on the merge toolbar, a different contact appears. I just
can't get all of the addresses to appear at the same time on the template.
Any ideas ?
Thanks

Internet Traffic Blocked
Hi All,
I am trying to help a friend who has a old computer running ME.
He can connect to the internet, and can ping domain names, which are
resolved ok, but Outlook Express and IE, and FF both will not talk to
the net, infact neither will Kaspersky Updater.
The modem doesnt seem to go in safe mode, and selective startup with
everything turned off but VxD's didnt help either.
Tried restore points but they all failed to restore.
Have done a full system scan, came up clean.
Resintalled DUN too, and that didnt help either!!!
Anyone else have any ideas, please!!!

computer freezes
Have this nagging problem in the last month or so where Laptop Me freezes
after popup window from Avast notifying detail changes. To be clear, the
freeze does not occur with any update. A notification box appears in lower
left screen advising of update saying "click here to review update". If I
don't click on it, it will disappear in about 5-10 seconds and nothing
happens. If and when I click on it, it details the changes but it then
freezes when I try to close it.
I can run a virus scan without problems but when I go to close the "results"
window, it also freezes. Thinking it may have been a corrupt file, I
uninstalled and reinstalled Avast but the problem persists.
It's not a serious inconvenience as I intend replacing the laptop in the
next couple of weeks but it is an irritant. Just as importantly, the
resolution would be educational to me.
Any ideas.

Do you want to get away from windowsme and windows in general
I assume that many use ME for simple browsing email and such and would
like to upgrade but don't really care to spend money for upgrading or
have an older computer or laptop and feel the possibly of slow
performance after upgrading would not be worth paying for an upgrade
to XP.
Well I used ME and XP for that matter for way longer than I wanted or
should have and thought this is kind of ridiculous. Simple software
installs make ME break, the drivers are no longer updated, there are
no new updates, the system will not be updated, it's not supported,
people don't make much new software or software updates for it.
It always manages to get slower over time for no defined reason, it
needs to be defragmented often where the performance 'might' get
slightly get better after using it.
You need software for security, and viruses get passed around pretty
easily, and it has a security flaw(s) that cannot be fixed.
Anyway I offer three operating systems.
The Windows 2000 still has supported updating from Microsoft as ME
does not. I works far better than ME and I generally like it better
than XP
This is not your property so if your religion your conscience or you
mother said to never steal this one may not be for you.
Anyway
First offered is windows 2000 professional, it works far better than
windows ME
http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3557732/Windows_2000_sp4_4in1_MultiBoot_ULTIMATE_WGA_CRACK_no_serial_FAS
Download the torrent at: http://tinyurl.com/2k3hya
This is a torrent, download the file and double click it. You need A
torrent program.
I recommend installing utorrent. Choose the 2000 operating system
option.
Then offered is Linux. This distribution is very easy to use. If you
don't have much space and an older computer I recommend this, it's
called PcLinux MiniMe. But it's also great for more current computers.
Download it here.
http://linux.softpedia.com/progDownload/PCLinuxOS-MiniME-Download-11665.html
Note in Linux you can download and easily install programs, like
firefox from repositories.
In PcLinux it's called the synaptic package manager that you do this
with. Note that MiniMe
is only supported by one repository. So replace the site setting in
'repositories and check
the repository site and uncheck the others.
URI: http://linuxstation.net/pub/pclinuxos/apt/
Distribution: pclinuxos/2004
Sections: os texstar updates nonfree 93
Then offered is another linux from the same family, it's called
PCLinuxOS 2007, it's easy to use and comes with a lot of extra stuff
than does MiniMe.
Home page: http://www.pclinuxos.com/
Download: http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_ionfiles&Itemid=28
The PcLinux community: http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=58
OK when you download these linux files it will be in the form of an
ISO file. ISOs are burned to CD and can be booted. As in You can
reboot your computer with the burned cd in the cd drive and
actually use the system, browse the web from the cd, email ect.
Note: with these you may need to go into your bios while the computer
is booting and change the booting order or your hardware. Selecting
the CD or DVD drive to boot first.
If you somehow don't like it it it didn't recognize some hardware you
will still have your winme installed, if you want to install it it's
pretty easy.
Make a root partition '/' make a 'swap' (equal to on up to twice the
amount of ram you have) then
make a 'home' folder.
For cd burning these ISOs I recomend Deep Burner.

question setupx.dll
Howdy,
puter reports that my setupx.dll is not right, so I did the replacement
thing from a new copy of the same dll file..
however after a couple of sessions on the web the puter says again that
the same file setupx.dll is not right again..
Now I've scanned the puter with everything I got and then some and it
says there isn't any virus or malware to be found.. (avast, adaware,
housecall, etc..)
did a full disk scan for possible bad sectors non found.. (80geg took
6.5 hours)
So, I'm open for suggestions as to what the problem might be..
as a side note, every time i try to access the microsoft update site i get
a crash notice of mshtml.dll has closed iexplorer. doesn't do it on any
other website only microsoft..

Specs
I know this is not related to Windows Me, but I value input from the
regulars and wondered if you cold provide guidance on replacing our Windows
Me laptop.
There are so many deals around but I seem to have narrowed our choice down
to either;
AMD Turion 64 x 2 dual-core TL-58, 1.9 GHz, 200 GB drive, 2 GB RAM with
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7159M chipset at $900 Cdn.
or
Intel Core 2 Duo T5250, 1.5 GHz, 200 GB drive, 2 GB RAM with NVIDIA GeForce
8600M GS chipset at $950 Cdn.
In both cases, a similar DVD is included. On the surface the AMD looks like
a better deal because the System Bus is reported at up to 1600 MHz whereas
the Intel is 667 MHz. From what I think I have comprehended from researching
this is that the Intel is marginally superior but I'm not sure it will have
any impact given the expected use which is primarily surfing the net, web
mail and maybe a bit of photo editing.
Would appreciate your comments.

Tax software for Win 9x/ME
Hello:
I have been trying to respond to a request about tax software for Win 9x/ME.
While other posts and replies have made it to this newsgroup, my attempts to
post replies and new posts about this subject with a recommendation have not
worked. So I'm going to try yet again, but with a slightly different
approach. Instead of explicitly naming the tax software, I will break the
name down into 2 parts to see if this message will post.
There is a tax software that still supports Win 9x/ME. Do a Google (or other
engine) search for: tax act. This should point you to the correct web site.
This software is the #3 tax package behind the 2 more popular names.

Axxxxxxx,TMP.
After that I try to reboot, it will not go to desktop. The ME logo will

A question on going from ME to XP
A while back we tried to get DSL running on this ME box. During the process
of installing the modem for some reason or another the modem couldn't find
the correct protocols to use to connect. The tech guy they sent out
couldn't get the ting to work.
Now, here's where XP comes into play. The tech guy told us that if we were
to upgrade to XP that the ME network protocols that are missing that would
make the modem connect would still be used by XP. I believe the missing
protocols were deleted the day that we got Cox high speed internet and that
was six years ago. Now, would it be better for me to install ME over the
top of itself or get a XP upgrade to fix this and was the tech guy full of
BS?
BTW, is there another type of start-up disk besides the emergency start up
one? I think he was confusing that with a restoration disk that comes with
boxes that weren't built from the ground up like this one is. Tag: Spywareblaster Update, 12/24/07 Tag: 292555
System Defrag
Hello,
I would appreciate a clarification on the following inquiry:
What is the difference, if any, while optimizing the system in this fashion:
1) I usually optimize the Win Me system in Safe Mode thru the Maintenance
Wizard. Then do a restart.
2) Today, after doing the above, I clicked on My Computer and optimized C
disk. I found out that there were lots of gaps and it took just a long time
to optimize drive C.
Shouldn't the Maintenance Wizard take care of the defrag? Why does drive C
show like nothing has been done when defraging thru "My Computer"? I hope
that this query makes sense.
I seem to recall that some users prefer to defrag via different utilities,
could someone also provide me with a safe link?

Need driver help for Win ME.....?
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to help me..........
I'm trying to update my drivers (modem, usb, sound, COM ports). I've
been to umpteen sites, and can't figure out which drivers are the
right ones for my setup. Microsoft doesn't support my operating system
anymore, so I'm stuck looking for the drivers at various other sites.
There are a *huge* number of possibilities (or so it
seems)...........I just want whichever drivers are the latest, BUT
reliable!!
I'm using: Windows ME
Modem is: PCTEL Platinum V.90
Sound: ESS Allegro PCI Audio (WDM)
USB is: 1.something, not 2.0. Can/should/do I upgrade to 2.0? If
not, where can I get the newest drivers for USB 1.something?
(I probably need COM port driver(s) too)
My sound drivers haven't given any trouble, but I'd like the current
drivers. My USB and modem drivers, however, are causing big problems.
Can anyone help.......please?! I'd really appreciate it! I've been
sorting through these sites for days now...........the drivers I need
have to be out there somewhere!!
Remember, I'm on Win. ME........(lucky me)
Thanks!

Adding to the registry from a disc
I recently had to reinstall Windows ME. I had previously backed up the

So I reinstalled Win ME and used the DVDs to manually put back most of
my data. However, there are some registry entries (presets for a photo

how to do this. I know how to use regedit to make copies of registry

slow shutdown in WinME which used to be a quick shutdown

But now when I go to normally shutdown this PC, it takes much longer, from

appear. If she clicks on the right-pointing arrow (to the right of
Play), photo 2 appears. Click on the same arrow again, and nothing
happens - no photo 3. Clicking on the left-pointing arrow does NOT take
her back to photo 1 - she's hung up at photo 2.
And sometimes, when she goes to the above link, that smaller photo of
the kitten does not appear.
When she gets hung up at photo 2, we recover by closing that browser
(IE) window, returning to the email that originally provided the above
link, and clicking on the link again.

I've received suggestions to verify that:
a) she has the latest version of QuickTime - she has
b) IE is version 6 - it is
c) Sun Java is the latest - she didn't have it at all. She does now.
The problem remains.
There are no anti-virus or spyware programs that might cause strange
problems. I've emailed Kodak support asking simply what the system
requirements are. No answer, after two weeks.
Any other ideas?
Thanks to all.

problem in running DOS program under windows ME
Hi,
I have an old DOS program which runs fine in every version of Windows
EXCEPT WindowsME !.
The error box I get is here :
"This program has performad an illegal operation and will be
terminated.Quit all programs and then restart your ...."
and it also shows under its details button :
"The program encountered a general protection exception
Fault location 10F0:0138
Interrupts in service: None"
Thus, it leads me to believe that WindowsME does not do as good
of job translating the FAT 32 stuff into compatible FAT16 calls needed
by the DOS program.
Is there any cure other than dumping WindowsME and putting a different
version on all the new machines?
The software is an MS-DOS based game ,"THE WORLD OF LEMMINGS" written
years ago using MS-Pascal.
Thanks

how boot to desktop?
Hi,
I have a pc ME that stops to get a password every time it boots.
I want it to boot to the desktop, but so far I have not been able to
do so. I switch the network thing to windows login, and I also
searched for a pwl file to delete, but there was no pwl file on the
PC.
The PC runs fine, it just always stops for a password, and there
isn't any password.
Any ideas much appreicated.
Mike
PS: I searched around via google and microsoft's web site
but couldn't find out how to do this. Tag: Spywareblaster Update, 12/24/07 Tag: 292437
