"Open With" on right click - "programs don't stick"
You know how you "train" ME to remember programs opening with certain file
types, such as .wav files with Media Player or Goldwave or Nero wave editor,
etc?
For some reason, ME stopped remembering. There's no sub-menu anymore with
the list of previous programs.
Any ideas on a fix? Tag: Spywareblaster Update 2/15/07 Tag: 287894

You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy.

No virus, download looks OK, Disk shouldn't damage, Tried /NCRC command

Make your slow PC a thing of the past
You made the investment in your PC so that you could enjoy the
benefits of a fast, easy machine that would make your life easier and
more enjoyable. Unfortunately, after continued use, all PC's suffer
the effects of a corrupt and ineffective Windows Registry, causing
error messages to appear, slow loading, and system crashes.
Eventually, that machine that was supposed to make your life easier is
now the source of your greatest frustration.
Computers perform best when they receive regular, professional
maintenance. The installation and un-installation of software,
hardware, and drivers often leave remnants behind in your registry,
resulting in a tangle of unused applications, broken drivers, and
incomplete and empty command signals. This mass of confusion slows
down your computer and if not addressed promptly can lead to serious
problems such as computer freezing, programs not responding, and
system crashes.
RegCure offers you the ability to perform an automatic repair of
detected items after a scan. You can configure the settings so that a
repair of detected items occurs after each scan. Backup and restore:
An automatic backup is created every time you use RegCure. You can
restore any items any time for peace of mind. Startup management:
RegCure offers quick and easy access to all the programs that are
launched when you start your computer. You can enable and disable
applications in the Manage Startup list with a few simple clicks.

** No Internet Connection at all **
I posted the information to the XP newsgroup and one reply noted that I
should post in the ME general group.
This PC using IE reports "page unavailable..." FireFox says "page cannot
be found..." and things like the AdAware update reports "error ..."
- it just does not connect to the www.
I've plugged this NIC into another WinME machine here and it works fine
but back in the prob PC and no internet. Device Mgr reports everything
fine and working properly.
Here is a "copy" of the info sent to the other groups as I really didn't
want to cross post but I'm not getting any useful responses at all.
"... I'm having a problem with a WinME PC that needs a fresh look and
this group can do that. I have posted this on the Networking group and
I'm extremely disappointed that there has not even been one response for
more than a week.
Basically, this PC will NOT connect to the www. I just reports that the
page can't be found and to check the internet settings.
Here's the information, with the hope that someone can assist:
"Hi,
This was posted for a few days now with no responses at all. Is this
problem that bad? I'm commenting once again as a last hope for assistance.
I've tried a number of things;
I downloaded WSOCK32.DLL (online) and copied that using a DOS boot. At
least the "explorer" error has stopped but again NOTHING happens when I
try to access the internet.
Removed Communications from the Windows Add/Remove Programs SETUP
section. Rebooted and set Communication back - SAME PROB.
I've gone to DOS and tried PING 127.0.0.1 and got NO responses and error
10091 (?) which MS Article advises TCP/IP removal and restore - SAME PROB.
Happens with DialUp and happens with cable disconnected. The NIC is fine
as I've switched it into another WinME PC that I'm working on and
everything on that PC is fine. So the NIC and cable connection is OK
IE and FF each note that they can't access the net.
Please, if anyone has an idea, please advise as I have to return the PC
soon and advise them to just trash the damn thing, Shame since it works
fine for their needs other than this problem.

{POLL} Windows Vista vs. Linux ? Worth the upgrade ? Worth the switchover
Considering what I've read in regards to Windows Vista in newsgroups
recently (both positive and negative) I'm just curious how many users
are going to dump Windows for Linux rather than upgrade to Windows Vista
? Comments ? Flames ?
How many users are going to make Windows 2K/XP (or even ME) their last
version of Windows and simply make the switch rather than upgrade vista?
I've already started the move over myself; currently tripple booting 2
version of linux and windows xp MCE (simply for the fact I need the
programs my school uses but once support runs out for XP I'm done with
Windows). I just bought my computer in October and it says that its
Windows Vista Ready but I doubt that very much from what I've read. :-)
Of course I'm not going to use any version of Linux that has the Oracle
label on it as Oracle is just as bad as Microsoft.

Applies in XP, not sure about ME
An FYI. Weeks ago I intended to - essentially - quit computers. Just set the
machine up to take care of itself, and finish the work I'd been doing for
months. Then I inadvertently deleted thousands of jpegs, many of which I'd
edited, and I've been coming here since because I've been recovering all
that work, which required undeleting many times more copies of the jpegs
than I'd 'lost'. You know, many are unuseable, many look useable until
opened and you find they're part of the file you wanted and part of another,
or part blank. And all sorts of other curious effects, but, as with digital
photography itself, take dozens of shots and you'll almost certainly get one
or two good ones! And now I have just about recovered all the work.
What happened was, in narrowing down the duplicates I use EasyCleaner to
find them, them delete them to the Recycle Bin, then either restore the
copies I want and delete the rest, or change the name of the folder they
were deleted from then restore them, so now there is a folder containing
only duplicates, and I compare and restore/delete from there.
Similarly, to get rid of a few dozen empty folders among hundreds of folders
that aren't, I search for all files and folders, delete the lot, then open
the Recycle Bin, restore the files and delete the remaining 0 KB folders.
Only the ones that had anything in them are recreated, the rest are gone.
What had happened was EasyCleaner found so many thousand duplicates, but
when deleted, there would be considerably fewer in the Recycle Bin. It just
happened again only this time I backed them up first (obviously I should
have first time around - but this is the kind of issue I'm having
post-accident. Absent-mindedness is, I suppose, what its called).
I immediately restored the contents of the Recycle Bin and ran the duplicate
file search again and, sure enough, this time it found about 200 fewer. And
it finally hit me. I doubt if EasyCleaner is the problem, but don't know for
sure. I deleted files in excess of the reserved space for the Recycle Bin!
Only instead of warning you, Windows just goes ahead and deletes the files.
To the Bin while there's space, and permanently once it's exceeded!
I'm only used to exceeding the reserved Recycle Bin space when deleting
drive images, or folders containing files that exceed the Bin capacity, when
one does indeed see a warning. For all I know when you delete multiple small
files individually en masse uncontained by a folder (?) this *is* what
happens anyway. But if not, I guess it's a bug, either in EasyCleaner,
programs like EasyCleaner, or Explorer.
No doubt it's rarely encountered because drives/volumes are ordinarily so
large a mere 1.5 GB of deleted files will come nowhere near to exceeding the
Recycle Bin capacity - but even if with processing power, RAM size etc,
today, massive partitions are not nonsensical, I will never believe they're
a good idea on 9x systems! And it's when partitioning that this danger
occurs. I never dreamt for a moment I'd delete enough jpegs to exceed the
Recycle Bin space on a 14.2 GB volume!
I just changed the global Recycle Bin size to 15%. I used to have it lower
than the default 10% but it was too much hassle in 98SE.

OT - Windows Visa
I have just seen BBC TV's programme on the launch of the new OS. After a few
minutes my brain switched of thanks to over use of "WOW" continuing ad
nausea.
There was no demonstration of Vista and the whole thing looked like trying
to sell me any other piece of consumer ware. "Listen to what I say, no you
can't try it out, yes it's perfect, no there are no defects .....". Have you
ever tried to buy ANY electrical product without some salesman (sorry
salesperson) flashing through the "features" of the product faster than the
eye or brain can follow?
What is the next piece of bloatware Microsoft are going to inflict on us?
What security fixes will the hackers force on MS?
Personally, I will not be upgrading to Vista; especially at the vastly
inflated price the UK will see (2x the US price). Indeed, if ME had not been
pre-installed together with software I deemed worthwhile, I would have
installed Win98 on the box I bought some seven years ago.
Is there any advantage over 98 that ME, XP and now Vista has? All I want, is
to switch on my box and word process, spreadsheet, surf, email and play
patience (sorry solitaire) in a completely transparent manner.
I would have liked to send faxes from my computer, but one of the
"improvements" of ME, was to remove the fax application that was part of
Win98. What other facilities have been done away with?
I guess this shows me up as a dinosaur but then as a 68 y/o I suppose I am.
Until my box crashes completely or the PSU blows up or some other terminal
mishap takes place, I will keep on with my ME based outfit.
When that time comes, I will have to buy a pre-loaded Vista box. (unless by
then the next ultimate improvement has arrived. Is XP shorter lived than its
predecessors?)
If anybody out there sees this as a rant, I suppose it is. But any comments
not too insulting will be welcome. If you just want to flame, then ignore
this post. I will ignore your insults.

CCleaner and "issues"
Hello,
When running CCleaner, there are two entries identified as "issues". After
being deleted, re-booting the system & running CCleaner again, these two
same entries keep *re-appearing* as "issues":
1) C:\WINDOWS\player.exe %1
*Registry Key*: HKCR\.mov\shell\open
2) C:\WINDOWS \viewer.exe %1
*Registry Key*: HKCR\.pic\shell\open
Is there a way to remove these registry entries - and if so, how?
Are these registry keys used by any other application or the OS? If so,
should I just keep ignoring them?
Running Windows ME.

JAVA 1.5 update 10 and ME
While I'm thinking about programs that won't run for me on ME...

won't install, either. I tried uninstalling first and that didn't help. As
a matter of fact, once I uninstalled 1.5 update 6 all I could get to install
was 1.4 update 2.
