Windows ME with Kaspersky Anti-Virus--Frequent system hesitations??
I've got Windows ME with Kaspersky Anti-Virus as the virus protection
software. I had Norton Anti-virus up until a couple of months ago.
Norton corrupted itself so badly that it had to be reinstalled every
three months.
I don't know what's causing this problem, but, I suspect it might be
Kaspersky. Every time I press the [back] button to go to a previous
page, my computer freezes for about 5 or 10 seconds -- then it lets go
and goes to the previous page.
I keep the security on my computer very tight. No site access allowed
unless the site has been added to a customized privacy list. I use
Adaware and Spybot to check for any unauthorized "lurkers". I
completely scan my computer every week for viruses.
I've checked for hidden software -- there are none. I've checked for
viruses -- there are none.
Does anyone else that's using Windows ME together with Kaspersky Anti-
Virus have a frequent, brief hesitation that happens enough to want to
through the entire computer out the window??
Anyone have any ideas on how I can find out what is slowing my
computer down??
I use Process Explorer from Sysinternals. I do see KAV running in the
background more frequently than I like. The idle process also seems
to run more frequently than necessary -- I fail to see why the idle
process should be running so often when I'm actually waiting for
software to load or for websites to load...
Any ideas??
Thanks.

System Recovery discs available
Hi,
I'm in the process of cleaning out my files, and cam across my set of
recovery discs for Windows Me that was for my HP Pavilion. I've upgraded to
Windows XP Pro and no longer need (or can use) these CDs.
So, if anyone in the US wants these, please contact me by responding to this
post. I don't want to throw them out or sell them, but shipping costs will
be the responsibility of anyone interested.
Regards,
Allan

System turned into crap
Hi there.
My computer just got busted somehow (for lack of a better expression), and I
need some help to get it back on track, if that is even possible.
What happened was that one day I rebooted it a few times in a row, because
the ScanDisk program kept freezing, and when it came back on:
- the display was in 16 colors;
- the firewall I had installed refused to load, and it still does - I can't
even uninstall it anymore; it tells me it cannot uninstall it and asks me if
I want to remove it from the 'Add/Remove' list, even though the program can
still be opened
- the Internet cannot be accessed - I think it's because of the firewall,
but I'm not sure
Can anybody tell me how to fix it, without formatting the hard-drive and
installing the operating system again?
(If that's not possible, can anybody give me a tip on how to prevent this
from happening again, if I am forced to re-install everything - but please
keep in mind that with Windows ME oftentimes you are simply forced to reboot
it, so just advising me not to use the 'Reset' button and always restart via
the Start Menu is not exactly a good tip.)
Thanks a million! I will be looking forward to some good advice from the
smart people in these newsgroups. Cheers! Tag: New Spybot Updates March 28, 2007 Tag: 288603
SYSTEM Connection Attempt
Windows ME 4.9.3000
IE 6.00.2800.1123
AVG Antivirus Plus Firewall 7.5.448
Periodically a Dialog Box with the information below pops up after I have
connected to the Internet. This will happen two or three times in a row and
then I won't see it for about a month. I am guessing that it is some kind of
upgrade attempt by Windows.
My antivirus is active and scans regularly, the firewall is in place and
functioning, I run Adaware and Spybot regularly and do not find any
indication of a virus or malware.
What is causing this?

Open With uses wrong application
My Windows ME Compaq computer came with a Microsoft Word 2000 CD that I
never used. Thus, Word 2000 was never installed. I did install
Microsoft Word for Windows 97 and changed the file association for .doc
files so that if I left click on a .doc file it opens with Word 97.
If I right click on a .doc file (or certain other file types) and select
Open With, one of the choices that pops up is Microsoft Word for Windows
97. The problem is if I select Word 97 the file does not open but
instead up pops a window that says "Preparing to install..." and then
another window that says "The feature you are trying to use is on a
CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the
'Microsoft Word 2000' disk and click OK". At the very bottom of that
second window is "Use feature from:", with the only choice being
Microsoft Word 2000 or else Browse.
How can I make the Open With selection of Word 97 actually use Word 97
to open the file?

Gary S. Terhune - Removal of Winimage
Gary
Thank you very very much for advice and tips.
These were exactly the Win.ini entries under
Extension being restored in the registry.
Folder references in Win.ini were not correct.
The Win.ini Extension were created by the
.EXE setup up file. The .ZIP ver does not create
win.ini entries. I had the .ZIP version and accidently
ran the .EXE version from a folder other than the
main WinImage folder which created the incorrect
path reference in win.ini and it automatically started
appearing in the registry.
Once again very many thanks and kind of you to go

I was doing a REPAIR of IE via Add/Remove and a message box appeared
"Please insert disk 1 that contains the file data2.cab". I found the
data2.cab in c:program files/compaq/navpl/userinst. It accepted the path but
then a new message box appeared "please insert disk0 that contains the file
data3.cab"
I can't find this on my system. Any ideas?

Color Profiles
I am hoping someone has a better knowledge than me of the files in the
color folder.
It is my understanding that windows uses them to correct from a core point
for color accuracy of your monitor, printer, scanner, etc. Just how, I have
no idea, that is I don't know how the system calls them or what part of it
uses them.
They have been around since W95 to the best of my knowledge as I was having
an issue back then and even talked to Kodak, maker of many of them, and they
were of little help. They did offer to make me a custom ICC file, expensive.
Sometime since then PRF files also get added to the folder. One of them
belongs to my printer, but one is Compaq and I have nothing Compaq, so I
wonder if it is default installed. And whether the profiles for the hardware
get installed is an iffy situation. An old Sony monitor would not install
them, even though they were present. They could be manually installed. Then
Sony came out with an update that would install them.
Same issue with printer, although I see the profiles in the folder this
time, they are not associated to the printer if I check the properties,
color management. The color profiles associated with this printer window is
empty. Checking the profiles known for this printer, properties, associate
device is empty.
And as usual, it appears the profiles for my scanner did not get added to
the folder.
What prompted me to pursue this again is that I noticed no profile was
associated with the monitor under the color management of my video card.
Checking, the profile for the monitor was not in the folder. I installed it.
Most of the files in the color folder are ICC or ICM, but one specifically,
mpc5500.prf, name of my printer, seems to have a bad association by file
extention. The ICC and ICM open with unknown application, which I suspect is
correct, and have the proper icon.
The .prf files have been stepped on by something and it might be the IE6
upgrade. Properties show that it opens with "Internet Ratings and Local Us"
and it is a PICS Rules File. If I chose to open the file a "supervisor
password required" pops up. It says that it will install the Rules file into
the Content Advisor feature of Internet Explorer. (Cancel, glad it warned
me).
I'm really confused on these files and hoping someone can enlighten me.
TIA

Security Updates CD and Windows Update
Can anyone explain to me why, on a fresh install of Windows ME, after
installing the Security Updates CD (Feb. 2004), Windows Updates no longer
functions? I get there OK, but when I click to scan for updates, it stalls
at 0%... Forever. I've tried this twice, from clean install on, with the
same results. I've also installed Scripting Engine 5.6 and Repaired IE as
per instructions from Windows Update T-Shooter. Even installed Java runtimes
and force reinstalled IE6 SP1. No luck.

WinXP - or not?
At the last computer show I was ready to get my WinXP CD, when someone next
to me mentioned, that with all Windows Systems, except 'Win2000', there
would be a refusal to reinstall in case of a crash. For that specific reason
the Europeans (Germans) adopted the free Linux System instead and, happily
so. Does this reflect reality?
I already have the CD for the Linux System, to be installed on a single and
seperate 80GB HD.
Would or should I want more?

It worked and *Windows confirmed* the change at the second boot after the
change. What a pleasant discovery, Mike.
You deserve a trophy for that.
I knew that it worked earlier, quite earlier, but to see windows'
confirmation topped it off.
Thanks again, Mike.

Problems After Running Defrag
My laptop has been locking up after internet usage during shutdown. I
finally decided to run defrag over the weekend. I have owned the laptop
since 2001 and never ran defrag b-4 this past weekend. It took approx 1 hour
for defrag to complete. Now when I open internet and try to type in e-mail
certain letters such as D, F and G executes commands as if you were hitting
control and then letter (ex. ctrl B=Bold). I cannot type because when I type
the letter, the keyboard executes certain commands. I thought it was
concentrated only in aol internet but then tried to type in Word and the same
thing happened. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so what did
you do to fix the problem. Comments are welcome. Please HELP!

USB Mass Storage Device
Hello, I'm experiencing the following problem:
Scandisk reports the presence of mismatched FATs on a freshly
formatted external USB HDD. When repaired Scandisk reports that it has
fixed the problem. However, the problem persists on the next running
of Scandisk. The same result is obtained for multiple HDDs.
The following is known:
Device Manager does not report any problems and has two relevant
entries - Disk Drives: USB connected HDD is correctly identified and
shown to be working properly & USB Controller: USB Mass Storage Device
(usbstor.sys) is present and shown to be working properly.
Windows Explorer lists the connected USB HDD (Drive F in my case) and
allows full access to it. However, data transfer is pains-takenly slow
(i.e. hours to run a thorough Scandisk on a small 2.5GB drive).
Is this a known problem with a known solution? Tag: New Spybot Updates March 28, 2007 Tag: 288269
Need DOS help
Hi folks,
I'm writing a batch file and need to check for the presence of a folder.
I find that the "IF EXIST ...." syntax only works for text in WinME.
I can use this in WinXP but NOT in ME
IF EXIST C:\TEST GOTO END
:START
RENAME C:\START\SAMPLE.TXT JONES.TXT
GOTO DONE
:END
ERASE C:\TEST\XXXX.TXT YYYY.TXT
GOTO DONE
:DONE
EXIT
Running this batch file in WinXP works fine but in WinME it does NOT
follow the directions. It simply drops to the next line after the IF
EXIST statement.
Same thing happens if I use IF NOT EXIST - just goes to the nest line.
Can someone advise on how to check if a folder is there and how to jump
to one or more places in the batch file for other actions?
