Memory Upgrade Performance Question
I am currently on a DELL (1GH) with 256Meg. Could I expect a dramatic
increase in performance if I upgrade to
1Gig Memory? I know its sketchy but if anyone has done it they would know.
Thanks

WinXP - or not?
At the last computer show I was ready to get my WinXP CD, when someone next
to me mentioned, that with all Windows Systems, except 'Win2000', there
would be a refusal to reinstall in case of a crash. For that specific reason
the Europeans (Germans) adopted the free Linux System instead and, happily
so. Does this reflect reality?
I already have the CD for the Linux System, to be installed on a single and
seperate 80GB HD.
Would or should I want more?

Re: Ye Haw....it worked
It worked and *Windows confirmed* the change at the second boot after the
change. What a pleasant discovery, Mike.
You deserve a trophy for that.
I knew that it worked earlier, quite earlier, but to see windows'
confirmation topped it off.
Thanks again, Mike.

Unable Initialize Scan Engine / Cable modem not seen
(On behalf of friend, John, who can't get online)
Under Windows ME
Overnight March 3, while pc off, unknown event resulted in following
situation:
1. Booting requires repeated F1 to get by tecnical screens to signin to
Windows ME.
2. At Desktop, message popup: "pcciomon - Unable to initialize scan engine."
3. Browser gives message "Server not found" (ISP reports server OK).
4. Problems persist after:
a. Re-installing modem files from Motorola disk (cable modem, 6 months
old), which checked pc as OK;
b. Windows System Restore to March 1 (2 days before problems arose).
c. Re-installing network drivers within Windows did not work.
Can anyone help? Thanks. Tag: NEW Spybot Updates - 3/14 Tag: 288298

Problems After Running Defrag
My laptop has been locking up after internet usage during shutdown. I
finally decided to run defrag over the weekend. I have owned the laptop
since 2001 and never ran defrag b-4 this past weekend. It took approx 1 hour
for defrag to complete. Now when I open internet and try to type in e-mail
certain letters such as D, F and G executes commands as if you were hitting
control and then letter (ex. ctrl B=Bold). I cannot type because when I type
the letter, the keyboard executes certain commands. I thought it was
concentrated only in aol internet but then tried to type in Word and the same
thing happened. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so what did
you do to fix the problem. Comments are welcome. Please HELP!

USB Mass Storage Device
Hello, I'm experiencing the following problem:
Scandisk reports the presence of mismatched FATs on a freshly
formatted external USB HDD. When repaired Scandisk reports that it has
fixed the problem. However, the problem persists on the next running
of Scandisk. The same result is obtained for multiple HDDs.
The following is known:
Device Manager does not report any problems and has two relevant
entries - Disk Drives: USB connected HDD is correctly identified and
shown to be working properly & USB Controller: USB Mass Storage Device
(usbstor.sys) is present and shown to be working properly.
Windows Explorer lists the connected USB HDD (Drive F in my case) and
allows full access to it. However, data transfer is pains-takenly slow
(i.e. hours to run a thorough Scandisk on a small 2.5GB drive).
Is this a known problem with a known solution? Tag: NEW Spybot Updates - 3/14 Tag: 288269
Need DOS help
Hi folks,
I'm writing a batch file and need to check for the presence of a folder.
I find that the "IF EXIST ...." syntax only works for text in WinME.
I can use this in WinXP but NOT in ME
IF EXIST C:\TEST GOTO END
:START
RENAME C:\START\SAMPLE.TXT JONES.TXT
GOTO DONE
:END
ERASE C:\TEST\XXXX.TXT YYYY.TXT
GOTO DONE
:DONE
EXIT
Running this batch file in WinXP works fine but in WinME it does NOT
follow the directions. It simply drops to the next line after the IF
EXIST statement.
Same thing happens if I use IF NOT EXIST - just goes to the nest line.
Can someone advise on how to check if a folder is there and how to jump
to one or more places in the batch file for other actions?
Thanks, Fred Tag: NEW Spybot Updates - 3/14 Tag: 288264

Where is my file 2
Would someone please take a look at my thread of "where is my file".
Maybe you know the answer and can also tell me why I seem to have tilted
Mike.
Not sure if it is related, but I ran across something strange this morning.
Browsed to archive where I keep some data.
Specifically a folder that contains data and forms for Vietnam Vets and
noticed a file name that I never created, except unknowingly.
DDCC7300
No extension even. I did a search for *DDCC7300*.* to see if I might have
passed over a file of same or similar name with pointer and accidentally
saved to that name in a different folder. It only returned the one file. So
I have no idea how it came about. But if I open it is an excel file. An
older version of a database that I have since added more sheets and data to.
Note, my original thread was about search, and am now double bewildered.
Any ideas to how this file came about or my stupidity about search are
appreciated.

Where is my file
Likely not the most appropriate subject, but here goes.
One HDD, three partitions. (nothing on second)
Search. Typed phrase, access*.* contact*.* master*.*
Look in:
All HDD's, Local Hard Drives (C:;D:;E:), yields 15 files, all on C:
E:, DSK2_VOL3 (E:), yields 93 files.
What am I not understanding?

Looking for Security Software for Win ME
Hi there,
My 6-year-old Win ME computer was happily running some ISP supplied AV and
firewall software until the ISP upgraded it to a newer version which is no
longer supported on an ME system. They no longer issue or support the "old"
version as it was with a different company.
So, I'm hunting around for the basic stuff to put on my ME system, i.e.
Antivirus
Firewall
Antispyware
Antiphishing
etc.
Just because these will be used on an older computer I would prefer to use
free stuff. I have hunted around on the internet, but it seems that Win ME
supported software is getting harder to find.
Suggestions and recommendations would be much appreciated. The system is a
433 MHz Celeron with 192 MB RAM. So don't want to install applications that
will use much RAM.
Thanks in advance!
By the way, I need to get rid of fragments from previously installed apps,
what would be a good program to use?

If he is not actively using tactics to avoid or sabotage killfiles

It does seem that the frequency and the size of his posts are
approaching net abuse. However, IMHO, they aren't quite there yet. If
his postmaster were to act in this instance, it would raise troubling
censorship issues.

reinstall ME w/o disc after failed XP upgrade
I tried to upgrade to XP but my computer said it didn't have enough

Help: WinMe is now Mac OS
I reinstalled WinMe. I went to the Windows Update site to pick up the

What is the fix?
I have reinstalled WinMe in the past, many years ago, without having this

problem with scandisk or what?
Yesterday after an apparently normal close down, next time I re started, the
computer went into scandisk "improper shutdown", but with the thorough
option dotted, automatically fix errors ticked and all options greyed. SD
went through about 3/4 of the bars, then checked some 28,600 sectors, then
started to scan 1,800,000 sectors.
Does this every time. Also the same in Safe Mode.
Scandisk in DOS mode shows no errors (surface scan not done - will still be
here tomorrow if I let it scan).
Any ideas out there? Are the 28,600 sectors scanned first "different" to the
1,800,000 sectors scanned secondly.
I did have a similar happening some months? a year ago but I "cured" it by
SD in DOS, then SD in safe mode, allowing the first 28,600 to check
thoroughly and stopping SD, then rebooting normally. (improper SD not
appearing.)
BTW just killing SD in normal mode prevents ZoneAlarm from opening - get a
yellow X. Opening up ZA from the yellow X gives me a "System Error" notice
where the open programs list appears.
Any ideas O wise Ones?
