PC boots in Safe Mode, but no desktop icons
I am aksking for help on behalf of my friend whose PC is giving him big time
trouble. I don't know what he did, but when he tries to reboot normally, a
blue screen appears with the message Windows Protection Error. He can boot
into Safe Mode, but there are no desktop icons, not event the Start icon or
clock. Nothing except his wallpaper. Can he do a Windows ME repair
installation? What else can he try? Without the Start icon, he can't even
go into Run, msconfig.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Lock desktop
Is there a means, even third party, to lock the icons on the desktop so they
can't be moved or deleted and no new ones can be added?
I'm dealing with a user who likes to "play" with the desktop and I keep
having to make service calls because things are messed up, duplicated, or
missing.

forced adapter update now Error: 0D : 0347 : 000181C
I replaced a GeForce4 MX440 a Kaser FX5200 128 MB Nvidia graphic card.
It's box says
it has some nice Nview Multi-Display capabilities and "TV-out support
(NTSC/PAL) TV system". Will it support a decent flatscreen?
I keep System Monitor on and lately began seeing the system "ekg"
flatlining for about 10 seconds, then resuming for 10 seconds, and so
on. Also recently an occasional black screen on the monitor it shares
over a KVM switch it has shared for years. Monitor & switch probably
OK since they act normal with the XP system I'm building.
Now I'm seeing blue screens right after logging in, error: 0D :
0347 : 000181C. My googling turms up corrupt program instructions
(maybe due to bad opcodes and the like?). And these often come from
using wrong video drivers.. I tried forcing the Display applet to
switch from the GeForce 4 to a FX5200 and that was a fight. The system
says the drivers are unsigned. But it seems to resist changing the
adapter to plain old system VGA also/
Any suggestions on getting this old guy bavk to work?

InstallShield problem
Hi;
About 2 weeks ago, while dl'ing new defs for Spybot S&D, a newer version
of Spybot began to self-install. Without thinking (which is the cause of
most of my problems!), I let it proceed. Halfway thru, it choked. I dl'ed
the new version and successfully installed it but it brought my system to a
crawl, so I uninstalled it and re-installed the older version. Since then,
I can't install any other programs. I get the following message:
Setup Initialization Error
Setup has detected that unInstallShield is in use. Please close
unInstallShield and restart setup. Error 432
Using Process Explorer, I don't see unInstallShield running so I guess a
registry key was corrupted, but which one and what should it be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA...gjw

New AVG AV 8.0 no longer supports Win 98/ME
Hello:
I noticed on another group a message that AVG has just released a new v8.0
of its' anti-virus product.
Unfortunately, the new v8.0 does *not* support Win 98/ME - only Win 2K and
up.
However, at least for the moment, AVG Free v7.5, which does support Win
98/ME, remains available.
But at some point, if AVG follows past tradition, AVG Free 7.5 will be
replaced with AVG Free v8.0.

Do You Have A Slow Running Computer?
Your computer was running fine, and now all of a sudden it is terrible
slow. Sometimes the program just locks up, and will not work. Other
times, the entire computer freezes. You know, the point where you must
hold the power button down for 5 seconds to shut the machine off. Or,
if you are running earlier versions of Windows, the infamous Blue
Screen of Death appears. All of these are signs something is wrong
with the internals of the computer, and this is causing you to have a
slow computer.
Think back, and see if you can remember installing something or
uninstalling something since the computer starting acting funny. Most
likely, you did. It might have even been something as subtle as an
update for your computer, or a greeting card, or even a screen saver.
As a side note, screen savers are one of the worst pieces of software
carrying spyware with it. If you do download something like this, use
your spyware remover and remove the junk that came with it. Back to
topic.
We all install and uninstall software. The problem with doing this is
it can mess up your registry files. The registry files are a set of
operational files which tell the computer how to run and operate the
computers software programs and hardware. When you install something
new, it might write over an existing registry file. This will then
cause the previous software not to work right, hence the freezing of
the computer....

Security Software for ME
Hi there,
Sorry to say I've asked this question before but have mislaid the answer.
Can you give me recommendations for various packages to run on a 7-year-old
Win ME system that are free? I'm looking for:
Antivirus
Antispyware/Malware
Pop-up blocker/ad blocker
Antiphishing
Firewall
Anything else I should have installed to keep this system secure. Would I
be better running FireFox rather than IE6?
This is a 433 MHz Celeron system with 192 MB of RAM.
Also, need to clean this system up. What would you recommend for
defragmenting and removing left-over files? Any other suggestions would be
most welcome.
Thank you!

AdAware SE & 2007
I have a friend using AdAware SE (free edition)
I'm checking here because the new AdAware 2007 version appears to be
only for Windows XP or Vista - NOT Win98, nor WinME.
On the other hand, while the AdAware site says they are no longer
supporting AAW SE after December 2007, there are Ref files for January
and February.
I've posted a request for info in the AAW forums but no replies so far.
I'm asking here as I know there are many users here that are facing this
issue too.
Does anyone still use AAW SE?

IF not, do manual updates work?

display adapter issue
I have an ATI rage fury pro/xpert 2000 pro display adaptor, at least that's
what the device manager tells me.
On occasion, during warm reboots, the machine will lose the display driver
during the reboot. It'll get past the Windows's screen and when the desktop
is supposed to start loading, the screen is black.
Rebooting again will make the system go into the startup menu after the
Windows splash screen. It doesn't matter which option you choose because
it'll go straight into safe mode. Once it loads the wallpaper the display
properties will come up and I can change to high color 16 bit. After the
prompt to restart the machine will act fine again and I can resize the
desktop and change it to true 32.
This issue has gone on for years now. It'll happen more often if I change
the hardware acceleration past 0%.
Checked ATI's site but no updated drivers.
Thanks in advance. Tag: New Def. for Spybot Tag: 293616

Time for a new operating system??
I used winme just until a little after they stopped offering support
and they admitted, at the very end, that it was a dud that cannot be
secured. I found windows2000 that I like and is supported but how
about trying Linux and give up the spyware virus magnet, especially on
a system that cannot even be secured in the first place.
Try PcLinux, get the minime version. Simply download the ISO file and
burn it to a CD with DeepBurner and
set your BIOS to boot fropm the CD drive and reboot. Use the system
from your hard drive and decide
if you like it or not. If you like it install it. Tag: New Def. for Spybot Tag: 293526
Network issue
Hi
I have a problem with an old laptop that I want to set up with my wireless
broadband connection.
The problem that I have (I think) is that I am missing 'My network Places'
and also missing the IEEE802.1x network protocol.
The wireless USB adapter is a brand new Safecom one and works fine on my
other laptop, which has the 2 missing items above, so it rules out the
adapter. The adapter finds my connection and links up fine, but I cannot
get any web pages.
Any ideas??
Many thanks

Rhyme but no Reason to System Restore points deletion
'opefully there is still time for me to learn to control our WinMe
computer. I've noticed since I got to messing around with it, that
System Restore points dissappearing for no reason I was aware of. I
don't run some of the Disk Cleaning Utilities nearly as much as I used
to. I used to Defragment alot (every night) because I had seen how
disk (file) fragmentation can degrade system response time.
Back then I never used System Restore points - was barely aware they
existed. It also seemed I never needed them.
Nowadays things have changed (Dunno why / wish I did)
System Restore points can really save your system.
In these circumstances, I am pretty sure that the Defragment utility
destroys Restore points.
Can some one please clarify this situation?

Hibernate & Garbage Collection & Finer Points
My oh my, the activity on this group seems to be getting thin like my
hair...
When you "hibernate" primarily for garbage collection ( the analog to
memory as scandisk is for disk), one would rather not have their
system take a nap. One just wants ME to clean up its used-memory and
unused memory linked lists and then let the user do what ever they
want. Unfortunately, as the name of the mode says, one will have to
hibernate until taking the few steps required to wake up from
hibernation. Those steps might easily take a minute or two. (On our
computer, I have to go get a finger nail clipper but that's another
story).
I know everybody (except me, apparently) has known how to put their
system into hibernation since Y2K but to allow me to be clear on how
I Quickly "collect (memory) garbage", permit me to rewrite the manual
on Hibernate:
1. Click Start then Shutdown then the Drop Down Arrow then Hibernate
then OK. At this point if one keeps a sharp eye on the Shutdown menu,
an icon resembling an Open Door appears then the screen goes black.
Hibernation has begun.
The way to Quick Garbage Collection is the same except, as soon as one
sees the Open Door icon, begin alternately pressing and releasing the
Space Bar about 5 times a second for about 4 seconds. The screen will
go black but for only several (about 4) seconds. Then one will first
see the monitor power LED light up, the system loud speakers will burp
and the monitor screen will come back to life. If one kept the System
Monitor utility program on during this process then they will see the
memory garbage has been taken out also. Tag: New Def. for Spybot Tag: 293472
