I just put a hard drive with ME already installed on it in a Gateway
GP7-500. After several reboots to let the drivers all get installed, I
wound up with a clean device manager. The sound card is Creative
SoundBlaster Audio PCI (WDM). But no sound. If I go into Sound Properties
under Audio there is no device present and everything is greyed out. I went
under the Devices tab and confirmed that "Use Audio Features on this
Device" was chosen. But still no joy. Of course in Device Manager it says
"this device is working properly".
I might point out that I put the original drive with Windows 98 on back
in and the sound worked fine.
I also went to the Gateway site and downloaded the specified drivers,
uninstalled the card (drivers AND physically), put it back in a different
slot and reinstalled it with the drivers from Gateway. Same exact results.
Anyone got any ideas?
I'm going to go Googling now, but I really don't know what to type in!

I uninstalled the card, and put in a Crystal 4281 card. I had the correct
drivers for it and it too installed just fine. But it isn't there in Sound
Properties, everything is still greyed out, and I still don't have any
sound!

And now my customer is telling me that she was having the same problem on
the old computer... the one the hard drive came out of. So that rules out
anything to do with the Gateway. It HAS to be something in the ME setup.
I hate to think about reinstalling ME. I've had really bad luck with
repair installs with this operating systems. I hate to keep adding
replies to my own thread, but the added info might be helpful to anyone
who may try to help me.

Ah! - So you were trying to 'replace' a faulty(?) HDD with a 'new' one with
WinMe already pre-installed on it - which probably had a different Sound
Card and its drivers are still on the disk - along with the original
registry.

In that case *maybe*, in spite of apparently re-installing the 'new' sound
drivers, you *may* have created a bit of "driver soup"

Did you do this 'properly'?
Did you "Remove" the drivers in Safe Mode BEFORE you re-installed them, or
just 'overinstall' them?

Try the old standby first <g>

Boot into Safe Mode, look for ALL occurrences of Sound Cards (including
games controllers) and any items with yellow exclamation/question marks and
"Remove" them ALL in Device Manager.

Shut down and re-boot (cold boot) and WinMe should re-detect your sound card
and attempt to install the correct drivers.

All being well you should have your sound back again.

Good luck

Mart

Close. Actually, it's the old hard drive with ME already installed on it
(from the burnt up computer). I'm putting it in a non burnt up computer.
But it's the same as you describe.

Not quite.

I removed them in normal mode, then installed the new ones.

I'll try that right now... before I send this... :-)
OK.. there was one listed. Not the one that was in there last. So I removed
it (in Safe Mode) and shut down. I put the Crystal card back in and
rebooted. It installed the drivers; it's in device manager and "working
properly". But it is still not in Multimedia Audio properties. In the
drivers tab in Sound Properties it is also listed as "Audio for Crystal
Sound Fusion (tm) CS 4281 WDM Audio"
Here's a screen shot of what I'm seeing.

Mmm... unfortunately I don't have a WinMe box to try, I'm using XP,
however, two things that I notice from your screen shots :-
1) The volume control is set as Minimum
2) The "Greyed out" box is 'normal' when 'Windows' is highlighted. What
happens if you step onto 'Asterisk'? You *should* be able to play it if you
click on the Start arrow.

But - Are you SURE that your "Audio for Crystal Sound Fusion (tm) CS 4281
WDM Audio" is the correct WinMe driver?.

Whatever happened to the Creative SoundBlaster Audio PCI (WDM) card, or have
I lost the plot? <g>

And did the soundcard work OK before this changeover?

My *guess* is that maybe you haven't got the 'correct' driver for your card.
Try Crystal's (or Creative's) web pages to confirm that your drivers are the
latest WinMe version for your specific card. The fact that drivers have
loaded does not mean that they are the 'correct' ones.

Or perhaps ... a new, replacement sound card is needed :>((

Yes, Rick - I did consider that (particularly as it was Crystal - a possible
sign of on-board sound) and hence my 'confusion' regarding exactly which
soundcard he is trying to setup. I guess we must await a response from
Menno.

Yes.

I wasn't having any luck with it, so I decided to try a different one.

Both soundcards were OK. The Creative card was in the machine to start
with and worked fine with Windows 98. The Crystal came out of a spare
computer I have for sale here... it was working fine about three days
ago.

A replacement installation of ME is what fixed it. Format and clean
install. ME didn't recognize the Crystal card but I had the drivers for
it. I spent more time trying to "fix" it than it took me to format and
reinstall. I cloned the drive before I formatted it and am getting all
the documents, mail, etc. back off of it.
Thanks for staying with me through the struggle!

Nope, there's no onboard audio.
It almost had to be something in the registry. I tried a repair
installation before I went for the clean one. It still wouldn't work, but
a repair install leaves a lot of the registry alone.

Well, that sorts that point out <g>

Removing the drivers in Safe Mode using DevMan is "usually" enough to sort
the registry out - But I wonder if there were some 'common' driver files
still on the HDD that weren't being removed or overwritten. I've certainly
had to clear out 'rogue' Blaster related stuff (even some of the xx.inf
files can hang around) when I've had problems in the past.

WinMe is not very tolerant of 'older' sound cards <g>

I had a (top of the range) AWE64 Gold which worked superbly in 98 but was
never right in WinMe - Creative were not interested in re-writing a 'proper'
driver for WinMe.

Good to know you've got your set-up 'fixed'
