    - MAPI32.dll Thanks for your help. I used the stinger and it correct the problem. One thing remains, the program tells me that "C\Restore\TempA0052407.cpy" could not be repaired.     - shlwapi.dll - deleted file Using a file "cleansing program" I must have deleted a file and error message involving the above reference came up. A friend tired to fix the problem, but now the error message does not come up, but windows does not load. All that is present on my screen is my wallpaper. I may have the deleted file in my recycle bin - but how do I access it. I have a restore date but how do I access it. Do I have to reinstall Windows ME. I understand that if I do I have to delete IE as well. Funny how all this seemed to happen with by last download of IE security patch 3 days ago.     - Hard drive space issue I'm running Windows ME on my HP Pavilion Laptop, which has an 8 GB hard drive. I recently started getting messages about the disk drive running out of room, so started deleting files and programs. It seems each time I delete something the space is immediately sucked up by something else, not sure what. I've run virus scans, clean disk, scan disk and disk defrag. Any ideas? I also noted a large amount of space being taken up by C:\Windows\TEMP...exactly what is this file and can any of it be deleted safely?     - System Boot Anomaly Last week I installed the following Windows updates: KB824145 for IE6 SP1 KB825119 for Windows ME and KB828026 for Media Player. Since installing these updates I've been experiencing a number of system anomalies. How about it Microsoft? Are these updates contributing to issues described below? Issue 1: The hyperlinks, e.g., My Documents, My Computer, etc. no longer function from the Start Menu ( see the thread of my post "Loss of Hyperlink Functionality" from 11/19/2003). Removing one of the updates (IE Update Q824145) as suggested by one of the respondents had no effect. Issue 2: For the past two days I haven't had a single clean boot of my computer. The process advances to the stage with a blank blue screen (the desktop background) and hangs. The mouse is useless for little more that running the cursor around on the screen. The only response from the keyboard comes when I press CTRL-ALT-DEL. This invokes a sound from within the machine that makes me think that a rapid-fire mechanical woodpecker (metalpecker?) is attacking the hard drive. The only recourse is to power down. Naturally, on the subsequent reboot ScanDisk is activated (Improper shutdown detected. Checking disk for errors.). Previously I've been able to [CANCEL] / [CLOSE] ScanDisk when I knew that I had not shut down properly and the boot sequence would resume and complete. Now if I try to [CANCEL] / [CLOSE] ScanDisk the system hangs and it's back to a power down/reboot attempt. Fortunately, letting ScanDisk run to completion - over the course of 8 to 12 minutes - results in a resumption of the boot process culminating in a successful reboot. Now the kicker. The reboot issue may not be associated with any of the updates. Examination of C:\SCANDISK.LOG reveled the following: ******************* Microsoft ScanDisk for Windows NOTE: If you use an MS-DOS program to view this file, some of the characters may appear incorrectly. Use a Windows program such as Notepad instead. Log file generated at 09:28 on 11/21/2003. ScanDisk used the following options: Standard test Automatically fix errors Drive Local Disk (C:) contained the following errors: The drive contained an error in its FSInfoSector. Resolution: Repair the error Results: Error was corrected as specified above. ScanDisk found errors on this drive and fixed them all. ------------------- What is FSInfoSector and what's its function? If ScanDisk was able to fix the error why do I continue to have problems? Is the reported 8 to 12 minute ScanDisk time appropriate for an 80 GB hard drive (about 30% full)?     - ME shuts down computer When I was using WIN 98 with a different mother board, the program would stop at the shut-off warning screen without actually turning the computer off. With ME and a new mother board, the computer turns itself off. Is this turning the computer off, a function of ME, or the Bios (can't find it there?) or the mother board?     - corrupted or not valid log file Step by step Interactive insists in its own installation everytime the computer is turned on. Step by step interactive cannot be uninstalled, because of a mrun32.isu file is corrupted or missing.     - Cannot delete infected file AVG Antivirus shows my computer infected with the Trojan Horse "DOWNLOADER.TOONCOM.K", and "DOWNLOADER.EXE" is trying to access the internet.     - Exporer problems. It wont open my comp/docs etc... Had a problem with games keep freezing/crashing. tried to sort. Reinstalled windows as last hope.     - Taskbar Frozen After starting or rebooting my computer, the clock on the taskbar takes about 5 minutes to load (also, I cannot click on anything on the task bar -or even use the windows key on the keyboard- until the clock has loaded). After a period of time, the entire taskbar freezes. I am able to Alt-Tab between programs and able to open new programs from the desktop, but I cannot click on anything on the taskbar, and no new programs opened or closed are reflected on the taskbar. Sometimes when I power up my Dell 1GHz system running Windows ME, the disk
drive is slow to start up. The system hangs for 10 or 20 seconds with the
blue Dell Logo screen before going to Windows. Usually the drive then
starts up. I can hear the whine. Sometimes I need to power off and on
again.

Is this a symptom of a drive starting to go? Comments...
