I have an intermittent, but fairly frequent, problem on my
computer. When I try to shut down the screen goes blank
but the hard drive keeps running.

I have to press the restart button and then the computer
restarts and goes through the ScanDisk procedure. I can
then close down with no problems.

Indicators that I am likely to experience this are that I
can download emails using Microsoft Outlook, but I can't
access the Internet using the browser. MSN Messenger has a
red cross on it and also cannot be accessed.

Thanks for any help and advice.

Look at the following link for shutdown and bootup problem.

The problem is usually a corrupted video card driver or sound card driver.
Uninstall and reinstall these drivers.
