    - blank IE screen I recently added a new hard drive, so we imaged the old drive on to the new drive, everything seems to be working okay except, I cannot open some of my mail with out cutting and pasting it to the Blank IE screen. If I go to my desktop or task bar I can open IE and it goes to my homepage, but, I don't know where this other IE screen is coming from, previously I did have a blank IE screen because I didn't use a home page, could this be a ghost of the original drive?     - Recording videos on CD Hi there I wonder if someone could help me with the following: I am using Windows ME. I have d/l some Westlife videos, they are in the format .mpeg and they play on Media Player on my PC. Can I write these to CD and then play them on my TV using my Pioneer DV-340 DVD player. It supports obviously DVD video but it also says that it plays 12 cm MPEG1 Max 74 min and 8cm MPEG1 Max 20 min. How do I record these videos on CD?     - How to solve a problem? Hi, Last three weeks whenever I turn ON computer,on the desktop appears a message: Problem with shortcut The shortcut "GStartup.Ink' refers to a locatio that is unavailable. aaaaaathe locationcould be on a hard drive on this computer,on a network, or on a different computer on your home network. Check to make shure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or home network, and then try again. I can remove this message by three times clicking OK, but I can'ot delete the message, it appears whenever I turned ON the computer. I checked everything.     - Automatic update problem I have my Sony pCG-FX120 laptop set up to automatically download Windows updates and then prompt me to install. Yesterday the system tray icon for automatic updates appeared, I double-clicked, told it to install the updates, and then after it installed them it prompted me to reboot. I did, and now my computer never boots past the Sony splash screen at startup. I cannot get my computer to boot from floppy or CD-ROM. I can enter setup by pressing F2, and I have tried disabling hard-disc boot from there and yet nothing works. The computer displays the Sony logo then goes black. What's the deal?     - Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Error When I start or shutdown & restart my computer a box pops up in the middle of my screen that has an OK box that I have to click to make it close. The box reads: "program: C:\PROGRAM FILES\PRECISION TIME\PRECISIONTIME.EXE" and under that: "abnormal program termination" How do I get my computer to stop doing this and is it a virus?     - system slow down I don't know if anyone can help or can offer any suggestions as to why the following problems might be happening. 1. I have a broadband connection but have found things haven't been working anywhere near as efficiently over the past week or so. It's most noticeable when I'm using services like eBay or search engines where I have to type something into the writeable field. Firstly there seems to be a delay between what I type and what comes up and also when I try and select the text with a mouse drag it doesn't really react and if it does there's a very noticeable delay. Also the pages seem to be taking their time loading. I've run a thorough scandisk check as well having an up to date virus protection prog (Norton) which I've tried running manually as well as automatically. Neither program reports any faults though, which is leaving me none the wiser. Any suggestions what it could be or how to solve it? I did run Spybot a while ago to get rid of any annoying stuff like Gator, but I'm not sure if this would have caused the problem. I also disabled a program that suddenly appeared called diskman.exe via the run > msconfig > Startup sequence. 2. My Epson color 740 just started printing in magenta only - lovely colour but everything's mauve! I wonder if it's a related problem or not? Can't be the cartidge as I just replaced it. Could a rogue virus have crept in somehow when I disabled Norton to run a scandisk check? If so, why does it show up and why isn't Norton fixing the problem? Anyhow, any ideas/help would be much appreciated as I don't want to spend the money on an engineer if it's something fairly straightforward.     - Access Denied - source file in use Whenever I try to delete any file I get "access denied, source file in use" error. I tried Microsoft's recommended solution (switch to classic folders view, then try to delete the large image file causing the problem), but it didn't work. Firstly, I'm not sure which image file is the problem, all I know is that it is most likely a temporary internet file. I have run virus scans, and no virus problems exist. No dll issues either.     - Start up About every fourth time I start up the dial up box arrives in the middle of the sreen before norton or any programs have been loaded on the right bottom of screen. At this point the desk top stops loading, sometimes if I cancel the dial up every thing continues OK at other times it goes to the blue screen to say things are unstable and I have to shut down and start up again, which it then does with no problem. This fault with the unwanted dial up only started about 5 weeks ago. I have cleared all cookies and temp internet files in case it was that but no change.     - System restore taking up whole hard drive Tried resetting the restore thru performance and unchecking restore...but no go. It's already checked...tried unchecking but it doesn't do anything and rechecks the box. Tried to select all the files and delete and it says access denied. Then tried to delete whole directory...it deleted about 10 gbs but then stopped an' said access denied...still using up about 5gbs. It's using about 15gbs for restore in a 20 gb drive.     - Windows ME Startup Problem After two years of flawless performance...my HP Pavilion 7850 would not complete the startup. I tried numerous times to start in safemode, but the PC would not allow it. THIS ALL AFTER ATTEMPTING TO DOWNLOAD UPDATES FROM THE MICROSOFT SITE CONSIDERED...CRITICAL !!!! I was unable to get to safemode. After failed safemode attempts, I have tried to restore the system using the HP Restore disk included in the system recovery package. Problem during restore has occurred, and the restore could not be completed.... on screen message during the rolling of "Inflating dialog" PKUNZIP: (W10) Warning ! can't create The system restore has made numerous attempts to go forward in the process using...PKUNZIP: (W10) Warning ! can't create: _RESTORE/TEMP/A0000001.CPY This continues with the same restore/temp/A0000002.CPY ....and on to the next restore/temp.This continues through PKUNZIP: (W10) Warning ! can't create: _RESTORE/TEMP/A00000075.CPY and the system restore concludes that the system has had errors during the restore processand the restore failed, could not be completed.     - can't move start button [that's only part of it...] don't know how it happened, but the 'start' button is now in the upper right, and when i go to it and get the double arrow and click on it and hold to try and move it, it won't move. in addition, when i try the same to move the quick-launch toolbar over, it won't move, either. if i move the address bar too far, it separates from the bar into its own little window titled 'address bar'. the right side bar, which now contains the 'start' button and the time and running programs, can only be moved towards the center, though not beyond. also, when i open IE, the toolbar/taskbar at the bottom disappears and cannot be retrieved onto the window. needless to say, i feel like a total computard. can anyone assist??? i really appreciate, and loads of thanks in advance... not too happy right about now-- allyson Tag: Shutdown causes a Restart Tag: 208091

I have searched the microsoft site, but can't seem to find exact wordings, or "fixes" for my errors. My latest message was Rundll32, and if problem persists, restart computer.     - winword.exe I installed MS Office service pack 3 over the weekend and somehow I believe that it affected Wordpad. Since i installed the service pack, I am unable open wordpad and get a message that it is not a valid win32 application.     - Error loading Explorer.exe in ME After running "live update" in Norton Systemworks, then downloading critical updates from Windows Update, my HP Pavilion notebook running Windows Me will not boot. After the Me banner screen and the usual beeps and clicks, the HP desktop shows for a couple of second then I get "Error loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows." I have followed the procedures in Knowledge Base article 299313 and after extracting and overwriting Explorer.exe, I get the same message. Following a suggestion on another website, I tried editing the Windows/system/ini. to make shell=progman.exe., then running System Restore.     - RE: Firewall alerts! My av software recently detected the virus W32.Sobig.f In my email. Obviously I never opened the attachment and immediately binned it I then received it again the following day. It seems to be getting spammed via a ghost mail or some such software to me. Ok so I went and checked out some Av sites to find out about this virus it tells me that its a high risk worm worse apparently then the MSblast or lovsan worm, the sites also tell you about how the system sends udp packets etc, etc. to a range of various IP addresses and they in turn send you loads of shit back. however the virus first must be activated manually. Which I didnt do. It also apparently sends itself to all contacts in your mail list. I have an aardvark entry as an untrue email address entered into my contacts list so that it stops this behaviour happening with worms they see the fist entry in your list try to send but cant because the email add is incorrect and the first entry in the list so it cant continue.Straightforward but effective. Problem is no online AV software is showing a problem and my own AV software is no longer showing a prob but since contracting the worm My firewall has been taking a pounding form loads of different IPS, some of which were listed as the ones the virus sends the packets to. I am getting the warnings come on telling me about subseven and backdoor trojan hack attempts which get autoblocked as its set to do that on all ports but the ports are stealthed so technically shouldnt even be visible. Does anyone know what would be a resolve to this. I am getting at least 7 hack attempts daily now from all different IPS and have tried reporting it to my ISP with very little help. Any input at this point guys would be hellpful! Its Norton Internet Security I use and is up to date! Does anyone know if I there is a section on the software that I can see If I am being port scanned and how to block it? Where would I go in ME to check my ports manually? Thanks and cya.     - nvram + mmsystem.dll = bad Last night, my computer froze. I rebooted it, and the screen came up in 640x480 with 16 colors. I can't fix it. If I change the resolution, it defaults to 16 colors. If I change the colors, it defaults to 640x480. It also insists on rebooting everytime I make a change to the display properties, despite going into the 'advanced' tab and telling it not to reboot.     - Unmanageable Windows Explorer Errors After unsuccessfully attempting to install a wireless networking card on my Dell Laptop, I've begun a chain reaction of errors that center around, Explorer has caused an error in <unknown> and will shut down, if you experience this again restart computer...     - Weird StartUp Problem with WinME WinME seems stuck in the troubleshooting mode. Booting up, it displays the System Configuration Utility window announcing that it is in that mode.     - ME starts in Safe Mode, but not in Normal Mode On a Toshiba laptop, Windows ME gets up to second beep, then just sits there with a DOS screen and an underline blinking cursor, but goes no further. Starting in Safe Mode works fine. Starting with confirmation goes all the way through the mouse driver, and then stops. I never get to the blue screen with an hour glass cursor. This happens every once in a while, and my only recourse so far is to start over with the computer's system recovery disk. I would like to know what Windows is hanging on.     - Missing file "mscoree.dll" On several occasions I have recieved this message after running my Norton WinDoctor... Missing File: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\0701\Intel32 \DotNetInstaller.exe" Then under details, it will say that the above cannot access a necessary file, "mscoree.dll." I am not sure where to look for this missing file. I have a Sony Vaio (model PCV-RX 450) which runs Windows ME. I tried looking on the system and driver recovery discs that came with this computer, but I have been unable to locate the missing file. The BIOS is at the most current version.
PowerManagement has been disabled in the BIOS and OS.
All of the hardware drivers are up to date.
All MS patches have been applied.
I have discovered that unplugging my cable modem from the
USB port allows for a normal shutdown. (It's not the
cable modem, because I changed the modem with another
brand.)
When I select "SHUT DOWN" the system appears to shutdown,
but then it restarts.

I'm out of ideas, drivers and patches! Can anyone offer
any new thoughts?
