Hi All,

Suddenly I'm having problems shuting down. It may occur roughly every 1 in 3
times. It looks as though it shuting down normally but the screen just goes
black but my PC just keeps running and I have to press the reset button and
try again.

2 most recent programs installed are AVG and Goldwave MP3 converter. Checked
for Spyware/Virus using Stinger, CWshredder, Adaware and Spybot but
everything was clean.

Also, a strange thing happened is a couple of weeks ago when the screen went
black it had a flashing _ and when I pressed any Key it shut down
completly. But now it just does the above.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Many thanks,

Craig.

Craig,

I'd start by uninstalling both AVG and Goldwave and see if the problem is
solved then, if that fixes the problem, reinstall first AVG, see if the
problem returns and if not then move on to Goldwave. If you find that one
of these is the problem then you will have to decide whether to stick with
the program or choose another, if the problem goes away and doesn't return
just put it down to the weather. :-)

Thanks Mike, I'll give it a blast later and let you know the outcome.

Mike, I unistalled both and still the problem is there. The only other thing
I can think of is my graphics drivers, as I have updated them recently and
have been having problems with WMP9 since the install. Don't know if this
could be the problem. The thing is if I remove the entry from device manager
in order to reinstall the drivers, it does not auto detect them and it looks
like safe mode, then it asks me to select a driver from a list. Am I heading
in the wrong dirrection thining it the drivers?

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Craig.

Are you sure you installed the correct Win Me drivers for your graphics
card? If you did it is unusual for the system not to autodetect and
install the correct driver when you remove it from the Device Manager and
then reboot.

I went to the NVIDIA website and selected the proper model and OS. It was
strange really because it kept prompting me to select the driver from a list,
but when I selected it from the list the PC still looked like it was in safe
mode but just hanged, with my background picture and didn't load the desktop
icons or taskbar. I then pressed CTRL > ALT > DEL and tried again. After
about 5 times it loaded the drivers OK without me having to do anything. This
is the reason I don't want to remove it from the device manager as it could
take ten times next time.

Hope this info helps.

Craig.

Craig,

Personally I'd try fixing the problem as suggested (removing graphics
adapter from Device Manager in Safe Mode, rebooting and let Win Me
redetect your hardware) rather than have my PC have problems on shutdown
but it's your PC and for you to decide which is the lesser of the two
evils. Best of luck.

Sod it, I'll give it a go later... Not much else to do in this freezing
weather anyway. I'll post back later when at home with detailed results.
That's if it starts up and I get on the net ;^ )

Cheers Mike,

Craig.

Yes... No problem at all reinstalling the drivers and it has solved the the
problem. It also shuts down a lot faster now.

Thanks very much for your help Mike.

Craig.

Craig,

Great! That's exactly the sort of post I like to read. Well done for
sticking at it and giving it a go. Now let's just hope it stays that way.
