Hey, I just have a shut-down/restart problem. I operate a
Windows ME Intel Pentium III 800Mhz computer. This problem
has gradually grown in occurance over the past few weeks
until it now happens practically every time I shut down.
Basically, Upon selecting a shut down or restart option in
the Start > Shut Down menu, it proceeds to shut down and
then the display screen completely blacks out as though to
shut down/restart and display 'it Is Now Safe To Turn Off
Your Computer', but it doesn't, rather, just hangs on this
black screen. One thing that does happen, however, is a
small flashing bar displayed on the black screen
(sometimes in an irregular position, usually in the top-
left corner) as though I should start typing code or
something. However, pressing keys does nothing and it is
completely unresponsive. Therefore the only way I can
force my computer to shut down is with the power button
with it still running.

I had this problem last year (on the same computer) and
only solved it by completely wiping my computer.

I hope this is solvable....

These shutdown problems can be difficult to identify and resolve.
Troublesome to say the least. Jim Eshelman has a very good,
comprehensive troubleshooting guide here:

WINDOWS SHUTDOWN & RESTART CENTER
TROUBLESHOOTING in 15 STEPS

If I were you I'd first try to shutdown from the Run Command Prompt, you
may narrow things down a bit or get a closer insight as to what is going
on when you shutdown, this page by Jim also:

Don't thank me, thank Jim for the excellent site.
