Can anyone explain to me why, on a fresh install of Windows ME, after
installing the Security Updates CD (Feb. 2004), Windows Updates no longer
functions? I get there OK, but when I click to scan for updates, it stalls
at 0%... Forever. I've tried this twice, from clean install on, with the
same results. I've also installed Scripting Engine 5.6 and Repaired IE as
per instructions from Windows Update T-Shooter. Even installed Java runtimes
and force reinstalled IE6 SP1. No luck.

No explanation Gary, however I wonder what happens if you DON'T use the CD,
but rather go straight to the WU site after freshly installing WinMe and
attempt all the updates directly from there.

BTW - I'm quite sure that you would have been most patient, mine took some
30 seconds to update from 0% to 33% and maybe a minute or so to complete to
100% (on broadband) so the update scan is certainly still working.

I suggest you wait a few days and try again. Since Win Me like all Win 9x

My current project is my own Update set for 98, 98SE and ME systems, so that
I don't depend on WU. Who knows how much longer 9x users will be able to get
in. But I need the info there to know what to include. I'm now doing a new
install to see how many more updates it will take if I don't use the SecUp
CD, and to try just installing IE6SP1. All I know is that it works before I
run Micorosft's Updates CD and not afterwards.

I know about the "Welcome to Mac" page issue, but this is different. When I

Gary,

Is this the "Unable to install all components" issue?

If it is, try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

Gary, although your proposal seems a fair and plausible reason to undertake
your current project, it doesn't isolate the cause of the failure. In other
words, is the CD aspect of the update the cause of the 0% stall or is the
problem due (as Zee has partly alluded elsewhere) to the 'current' WU site
issue. Maybe there's more than just the Mac issues - as Mike's quote
actually mentions 'server side' - hence my suggestion, thus eliminating the
CD (or not) as the real cause of the problem.

And I would certainly concede that two hours of no progress is a true test
of anyone's patience <g>

I tried the IE6 SP1 CD, too (one I made myself from downloads.) Next is to
install IE6, minimal, via WU.

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me that this server issue goes beyond the Mac
page. Just wondering if anyone else is getting the same results. SecUp CD
and IE6 SP1 installs don't have this effect on Win98 or 98SE.

Re: Security Updates CD and Windows Update by Norman

Norman

Of note, a couple of weeks ago, when trying to check updates, it kept
directing me to Mac page. Not sure if that is the issue being seen.
Also, on my last install, a couple of months back, I used an update CD. Mine
may be different, but it needed access to internet to complete and was
apparently automatically getting some stuff from the web. There were some
updates that still needed to be done later.
I strongly suspect that my CD will be useless at some point in time such as
when they kill the site it grabs updates from.

That Mac page redirect is still occurring. Whether the problem is related to
mine (scan stuck at 0%), I don't know, but it only happens with ME, whereas
the Mac page thing happens on all 98, 98SE and ME. (I just keep trying,
making sure to close all IE windows before next attempt.)

The Updates CD that MS put out in Feb 2004 is wholly self-contained and does
not access the web directly. Only at the end are you offered some follow-up
links.

No, it can't be purchased. It never could be, it was free. There are a few
locations where you can download an ISO of it. Forget where, just now.

OK, here's a post from "Lee", a few days ago, in the Win98.Gen_Discussion
group:

-------------------------------------
Vic, our own Menno Hershberger posted an iso of the CD on his site
while it was still available for free. Go here and click continue to
find and download windowsUpdate2004.iso file.
http://www.mewnlite.com/utilities/

The current direct link is below
http://www.alongthewapsie.com/util/_utilities/windowsUpdate2004.iso

Thanks, Menno."
-------------------------------------

I will soon offer a 2-CD package with the Security Updates CD and the rest
of what's necessary to update 98, 98SE and ME systems, for $3. My cost,
really. Email me if you want on the list:

Gentleman the problems are with Microsoft. Yes something happened. It's fixed
if it happens again just wait a few days and try again.

Stop worring be thankful they don't just take it off the market

Again, I know about the "Welcome to Mac page" issue. I want to know if
anyone has determined that the "stuck at 0% scan" is also something seen by
others recently, something that might be attributable to the same server
problem(s). Do you know, have you heard, that the 0% scan error is also
recently rife amongst ME users? It doesn't happen to my 98/98SE installs.

Yes I've ran into that just recently myself and there is a work around it but
it take time. Format the drive reinstall DO NOT UPDATE TO IE6... UPDATE ALL
OTHER UPDATES BEFORE YOU UPDATE IE 6. This will ensure you get all updates
before the 0% STUCK. That's what I did if not just keep pressing F5 until it
gives....

good luck

Yeah, but what do you do for all the POST-IE6 updates? There's a good dozen

Dumb question but, is the system's time set correctly ?
And, what does the Windows Update.log show ?

I didn't see that one in the T-Shooter. I'm off to try it now. Got a fresh

I'll take a look at everything else, too.

OK, now I have more testing to do! I installed ME, then the SecUp CD, then
went to WU and the scan succeeded! Only difference from before is that I
*didn't* visit WU and install ActiveX components before installing the SecUp
CD this time, whereas I'd always visited WU before installing the SecUp CD
on previous occasions. This would point to the solution offered by oops!,
perhaps?

Anyway, I now have two scenarios to test, and I'll watch my LAN settings
while I'm at it.

Later.... Much, much later... (where;s my pipe!?)

Re: Security Updates CD and Windows Update by oops!!

oops!!
Mon Mar 19 12:51:50 CDT 2007

Gary,

Please note the workaround I proposed is specific to an error when upgrading
to IE6SP1 on WinME, and ONLY when an error message similar to "unable to
install all components" appears.

If this is one of the issues you are facing, do try the workaround.

Only Updates called for by WU that I can't locate as stand-alone installers
are two Recommended updates, the "IE Navigation Sound" update (for 98, 98SE
and ME) and the "MovieMaker Update" for ME. Any ideas?

See my reply to Mow. It would *appear* that the issue does indeed involve
component installation, since the one time I *didn't* visit WU and install
the ActiveX components *before* installing IE6, the scan worked OK. I'll be
testing further, and applying your workaround (and checking Mow's
suggestions) on a system where I visit WU before installing IE6.

OK, it did it again. I installed ME (clean install), then went to WU and
scanned for updates, installing all the components, then installed SecUp CD,
then went to WU... Scan sticks at 0%. Nothing ticked in LAN Settings, and
HTTPS/SSL works OK (though that link you gave me does not.)

Off to try the solution offered by oops!

There is no such folder as:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information
on this system after installing IE6 SP1.

No folder with the word "uninstall" anywhere.

My goof! Forgot to show all files after reinstalling ME! DOH!!!

But I don't think this will positively affect my problem with Windows
