I'd want to determine whether this was:
1) A file system or HD problem
2) A Scandisk problem
3) A general hardware problem (e.g. RAM)
If (3), then you need to find that out before doing anything else.
From a PC that is stable, download a free RAM tester from
www.memtest86.com or www.simmtester.com, follow the instructions to
make a test diskette, and leave that running on the sick PC overnight.
Anything that these finds as errors *will* be significant.
Once (3) is excluded, tackle (1) by doing hte test from a DOS mode
boot (being a WinME victim, that would prolly require fiddling with
diskettes and CMOS boot order, etc.). If DOS mode Scandisk finds no
logic of file system errors, it's (2).
Warning: Do NOT use an MS-DOS version of Scandisk (it will trash
LFNs); same applies to most disk utils that predate Win95.

Drugs are usually safe. Inject? (Y/n)
