I'm working on rehabilitating a friend's computer. At the
moment I'm in a deep hole in that I can't even get the
poor thing to start up. Scan disk runs because I had to
force the shut down - but it just hangs. I'll try
starting in safe mode when I get home from work tonight
but I thought I would drop this posting in case someone
has an idea that will keep me from making things even
worse than they already are. Assuming that is possible.

It's a Dell machine - lower end Dimension L800r. It's
been running about 4 years. AntiVirus running but
probably never updated. Clearly loaded with spyware.
Possibly virus infected (obviously). May be suffering
from some ill advised repair attempts of their own as
well as of mine - to be honest. Symptoms are extremely
slow response and other types of bizarre behavior.

They recently downloaded and installed a program called
WinAntiVirus 2004. That was my biggest going in problem
because - they reported that it pushed them over the edge
on response - unfortunately I can't stop the program
because the only thing that it is willing to run is the
activation program - I couldn't get to the internet to do
it - and I'm not sure I want to do that. I unchecked it
in the msconfig startup tab - but I'm concerned that some
of the little processes that are running may also be
associated with it - so I hesitated from simply
uninstalling it from add/remove programs.

Does anyone know of this program and whether or not it is
reputable. It looks shakey to me.

Regardless though - can't do much now that scan disk
hangs and I can't get a start. I was in the process of
investigating each thing in msconfig-startup and
unchecking the ones that looked safe. The last thing that
I did was to uninstall a thing called Webenhancer.

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated before I
continue my journey.

There are a number of comments in other forums that this program has caused
problems for others who have installed it, and it may have come with adware
or spyware bundled into it.

Take a look at my Web site (http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm) for a
process you can follow to try to clean up the mess you may have on your
hands.

thanks, Richard - I came back from the brink of doom and
am now following your advice. I put up another posting
because trying to install adware - I appear to be stuck
at square one with a corrupt winmm.dll
