 - Problems deleteing things Each time I try to empty the bin or just try to delete anything I can only get rid of one item at a time so if there is 22 items in the bin and I select all and delete it comes up with the massage "Explorer has caused an error in unknown" I press the OK and the page closes and gose back to my desktop I then go back to the bin it can be only one item sometimes 5 or 6 items have been deleted I will have to keep doing this untill they have all gone and at times everything just freezes and will stay like it all day.  - SHW32.DLL FILE I was attempting to download some toddler software which said it needed the quick time update to install. I downloaded the quick time update, then attempted to install the toddler software, and ended up with this error message: "SHW32.DLL file corrupt" and instructed me to reinstall it. Ok, I'm clueless.  - Blue screen on restart I loaded the last 8 critical Windows updates. I restarted and got a message saying that Windows had detected and corrected inconsistancies in the system files.  - _RESTORE file I just downloaded the AVG antivirus program. The search turned up a folder known as "C:\RESTORE\TEMP" while checking the computer. It contains over 48,000 files, most with something in them. They include 181 files containing a virus. Any idea what this folder is? I run Norton Anti-Virus and believe that all the files I have been deleteing from Emails and others are lodged in this folder. If I am correct, can I safely delete all these files? I also have a folder under WINDOWS\INF that has over 32,000 files most with 0 bytes in them. Almost all start with oem, then a number then INF at the end. I was told to delete thm by another newsgroup and did so on Monday-- 5,000 at a time. Today they are all back in the same folder and won't let me delete them. It says,"Access denied. The source file may be in use." Any suggestions what is going wrong? I'm not to tech literate, so please give good instructions on suggestion of how to fix these problems.  - Ethernet Adpter (KEN20 ISA) 001 not working after Upgradw Hi, I recently upgraded from Win 98 to Win ME. The following error messages appears during booting time "Kingston Ether RX KNE20 ISA Ethernet Adapter (0001) not working properly". I used Device Manager to display detail information about the driver, there is an exclamation mark at the beginning of the driver name and also other drivers have the exclamation mark at the beginning of the name, then I ran Automatic drive upgrade, the system recognises the current driver as being good. Does the exclamation mark at the beginning of the driver name signal that the driver is not propperly upgraded from Win 98 to Win ME.  - cd drive/ dvd-rom I have recently realized that my computer no longer recognizes that my DVD-ROM or CD Writer drives even exist. I have a small icon on the bottom right of my screen, next to the mouse icon, with a picture of a CD and a disk drive with a red circle and line through it saying Adaptec Direct CD Wizard, No supported CD-R/ CD-RW drive! In hindsight, it has been there for a long time (month or two?) but I never really thought much about it because I've not needed to use either of these drives until today. The DVD-Rom drive will at least open when the button is pressed, but the CD-Writer drive won't even open at all! The DVD-Rom drive does nothing when a disk is inserted into it. Further, when looking in the "My Computer" section, it no longer even shows the M: or N: drives as being there anymore. We have had this computer for several years and have been really happy with it and have had essentially no problems until now. It has had a few power outage type shut downs, but is on a power bar. The only thing I can think of that has recently happened is that we moved the computer to another room, but I think that small icon was there before that.  - scan disk Last time I scanned disk it found errors which were fixed. It also found some files that were unrelated and I had them store them in a folder so that I could check them out before deleting them. Now I can't find them to check them out.  - ScanDisk Don't Work I have Windows Me. There was an error: the system froze and the hard drive made a repetitive noise for about 1 minute; afterwards the shutdown could be done. Upon restart, the "ScanDisk Thorough" started. After a few hours the system froze. I tried again with no success. For now, I disabled "ScanDisk" at start-up with "msgonfig", and the system seems fine. - What can I do to correct this situation? - Is the hard drive at fault, and have bad sectors, which cannot be repaired?  - Slave Drives I was given an HP Pavilion with win ME on it and tried to install my new 120 Gig hard drive (Win 98) with all my Data as a primary slave drive so that I could copy my Data over.  - PSAPI I currently run Windows ME. Whenever I start up my computer it tells me ERROR STARTING PROGRAM: A required .dll file PSAPI.DLL was not found.  - Shut Down Up until a few weeks ago when I shut down my computer using the shut down command on the drop down windows menu, my computer would close all programs and then the system would shut down and power off. In the last couple of weeks, with no change that I am aware of, the shut down command starts but then the system does not completely shut down and the screen goes black with a flashing cursor in left corner of the screen. The CPU will keep running and it cannot be turned off at the unit and we have to do a cold boot in order to get it back. Any assistance with the problem would be appreciated. Thank you.  - Automatic Windows Updates Today for the first time I got a Windows Icon in my taskbar, clicked on it and it installed a Windows update that it had apparently down loaded previously at a time I was on the Internet. It instructed me to reboot and on reboot got message to wait while Windows was updated. I have always logged on to the Windows Update site and selected the critical updates I wanted, confirming that it was a valid MS update. Should this be reported as a possible virus?  - Scan disk problem I have some program running in background that writes to hard disk continuously, even with all programs shut down except explorer and systray. Because of this, scandisk will not run, even on startup. Both scandisk and defrag must restart every few seconds. How can I find and eliminate this program? I tried restarting in "safe mode" and still get the error that scan disk restarted 10 times. I have McAffee virus and fire wall running. Nothing shows a virus. I don't know what else to try.  - MS Office 97 Power Point in MSME Is there a version of MS Power Point that will work/install with Win Me???? I have tried installing from an old MS Office 97 installation disk and am told that the install.exe is not a valid Win32 application. Is there a way around this. I can run the PP program from the MS Office 97 disk but haphazardly. Lots of features won't work because they haven't been installed. Would appreciate any email responses. thanks.  - control panel vanished HELP!! I was attempting to uninstall Internet Explorer to reinstall and I closed the control panel behind the add/remove programs box. When I did that, my control panel vanished. I have rebooted several times to no avail. I can open the control panel by the start button, from my computer, and from explorer, but when I open the control panel, nothing is there. It says at the bottom that the folder contains 31 items, but you can't see them nor can you right click inside the folder to get a menu. Inside the control panel is nothing. Absolutely nothing.  - Memory dump for data recovery Is there a way of dumping entire memory in WinME? What I'm really looking for is a data-recovery tool rather than debugging.  - ActiveX error I am trying to "fix" a friends PC. On the desktop, going to start doesn't do anything. I can't get to any programs. When I try to browse the drive in windows explorer, I get the following message: "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly." And it doesn't. I can't see anything. This computer in its current state is unusable. I went into safe mode to check things out, and nothing appears to be askew, but obviously there is. Does anyone have any ideas? Things to try? Thanks in advance for any help.... My slave drive has changed all it's folders and files to: Folders are listed as: DIR0000 DIR0001 DUIR0002 DIR0003...ETC Files are listed as: file00b7.chk file00b8.chk file00b9.chk...etc The type of files are listed as "Recovered File Fragments" I discovered all this when I tried a MS Back-up.It said so At one time I remember after a scan session it said errors could not be fixed because a log could not be written.  - Iexplore error in URLMON.DLL and svchost quit program window I'm experiencing two problems that just appeared within the past week and may be virus connected. First, two unwanted websites have managed to display themselves, without my choosing them or ever having visited them before. They appear in both my desktop and in my Favorites list, each time I open the computer and one of them also appears, automatically, in my Internet Explorer Address window each time that I access the Internet Explorer function. Almost immediately after opening Internet Explorer, a window pops up saying that "Iexplore has caused an error in URLMON.DLL and Iexplore will now close." At that point, the entire Internet Explorer window closes automatically. The only way I can avoid this is to desktop the home page that I do prefer and open my IE window that way. I have no idea where these two sites have come from and how they can attach, automatically, to my desktop, my Favorites and become my home page, without my choosing them, as I've never accessed them, before. Second, starting four days ago, whenever I attempt to close my computer, a window appears that is identified as "svchosts" or "svchostc" and reads, "You must quit this program before you quit Windows. Click OK to quit the program and Windows or click Cancel to continue running the program and Windows." The problem is that when I click OK, after a few seconds, another window appears to the effect that the program is not responding, then gives me the usual three options of Wait, End Task or Cancel, none of which accomplishes anything. Meanwhile, my computer freezes and I cannot do anything except return to Start and commence the entire close down process, again, leading to the same svchost circular fiasco. Eventually, I only can close the computer by disconnecting the power cable. I cannot delete the "svchost" program because Windows uses it to run. Any suggestions or solutions would be welcome. Make a new Startup Disk is the easiest way. Control Panel\Add-Remove
Programs\Startup Disk. But it's best to run ScanDisk from Windows. Less
likely to screw your system.
