i wrote to you last week and cannot find my original message re:scan disk and
defragmentr not completing their job. (with a baby and toddler and study
please forgive my delayed response). thankyou for your response. i did try
what you said, i.e. doanload a recommended scandefrag program file and let it
run. I still has the problem of not completing the scan the only good it did
was to inform me that i have 18 programs running!! (when ofcourse i have
closed everything). do my anti virus and error guard programs make up for
this many programs running or is something going on with my pc that i dont
know about?! it has a mind of its own lately. it is 'microsoft millenium me'
and since microsoft are wiping support for this product after july 11 do i
take it that maybe i just need to replace it? is that why i am having these
problems? or do i need a technitian to come and service my pc to stop those
18 programs running that prevent the 'scan disk' from completeing and hence
my 'defrag' unable to continue. I suppose what i am really asking is, Is my
PC doomed????or can you HELP ME!!

Probably because you are looking at the wrong newsgroup <g>

Your original post was to the windowsme.display group and not the
windowsme.general group, to which you've posted this follow-up.

Before you tried ScanDefrag, did you actually run Scandisk in Safe Mode as
suggested by Mike M? Under the circumstances, maybe that is where you
should start. Try it in Safe Mode and let us know how you get on. Remember
to 'switch-off' the nag pop-up. (Also, take time to carefully read the notes
supplied with ScanDefrag!!)

Doomed? - Probably not. However you *may* have to help yourself.

Possibly so, unless you are prepared to 'have-a-go' yourself and are
prepared to have to spend a little time trying to fix it. Make a note of the
18 programs and decide whether or not you need them and if necessary either
disable or remove them. Again, read the ScanDefrag notes. But DO try it in
Safe Mode first.

thankyou for your reply. yes i am prepared to give it a go (with one income,
being my own resource is our only choice. given my time constraints, i will
need to do this over a period of time. do you think you can stick with me?).
for now, i will run the scanDefrag again and see if i can find details on the
18 running programs because i didnt see such a thing on the two occassions
that i did it. i assume by you mentioning this that it is possible. Ill get
back to you then.

Well done and good luck for having a try and 'giving it a go'!

Before you run ScanDefrag, try running Scandisk and then Defrag in Safe
Mode. If Scandisk gives you a problem in Safe Mode, you may have to run it
in Real Mode DOS. But come back here before you try.

Besides myself, there are several other contributors (including a couple of
MVP's) who 'watch' these WinMe newsgroups, and I'm sure they'd also be happy
to help you should you get into further difficulties whilst resolving your
current (or even a fresh) problem. Don't forget we are all from different
time zones too, so don't expect 'instant' replies.

The only thing that I would ask is that you keep with this thread (unless
the topic changes <g>), that way everyone can keep a track of previous
conversations and be able to follow the status of the problem and any new
issues you raise.
