I've always run Scan Disk on a regular basis on the home computer, which
runs Windows ME. The last several times I've tried to run Scan Dick, the
program hasn't worked. I don't get an error message, but I've let Scan Disk
run as long as four hours with no results. Before running Scan Disk, I
closed all other programs.

Gregg,

Get the free ScanDefrag. It is the most advanced disk maintenance
program there is. It runs Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk, and Disk
Defragmenter. It's easy to setup and use, and it can deal with
problems like "drive's contents have changed: restarting...".
Get it and read about all the options it has that you can use.

Hi Gregg,
When I run a scan disk and defrag I type in msconfig from the run menu and
uncheck load start up items. then reboot and it scans and defrags just fine.
There are often a lot of hidden programs running in the background that we
don't often know about. Un checking "load start up items" in the msconfig
setting stops them from loading. Try it, let me know how it works for you.

Try it in Safe Mode.
Restart and start tapping on the F8 key when the logo appears. This
will
bring you to a black screen with a number of options. Select #3. The
next
screen should be your desktop, but it will be either fuzzy or in a
different
colour, which is Safe Mode. At this point, proceed with a Scan and/or
Defrag. Once finished, restart so that you return to Normal mode.
If for whatever reason that does not solve your problem, try a
different
program by downloading either GeoDisk from
http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Files/GEODisk.zip

or ScanDefrag from http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/

Both of these programs are free and appear to manage the closing
process of any open
programs.

Good Luck

Let me second the kudos for ScanDefrag. On both my Frankenputer and my
daughter's HP getting through Scan Disk and Defrag was an exercise in
frustration. With ScanDefrag it runs overnight and turns the computer
off when done. My thanks to whoever wrote it.
