The previous time I restored an ME computer I could not install KB912812
because it blocked Microsoft Office Update and other connections like
Semantic virus check and security check over the internet.

I'm presently restoring another Win ME computer and I see that the KB912812
update no longer exists but it seems to have been replaced by KB916281
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1) and a
follow-up KB918439 (Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1).
Are these two updates safe to install or could I run into ActiveX problems
like the previous KB912812 caused?

I never experienced problems with either update so I'm hardly in a
position to offer advice, other than that I've experienced no problems.<g>
I would however strongly urge you to install the most recent (and last)
cumulative security update for IE6 SP1 which released in June 2006
(KB916281) together with the other two recent updates 917344 & 918439 for
Win Me. You might also want to read David Lipman's post in this newsgroup
where he explains how to patch IE6 SP1 for the VML vulnerability mentioned
in Security Bulletin MS06-055.

Mike,

Thanks for your reply.

My previous problems, both with Symantic virus & security checks and
Microsoft Office update, occurred when both websites tried to install
software in my computer. The previous KB912812 update blocked this. I learned
about the problem through discussions on this forum. I had to reformat and
rebuild my ME system to get rid of the update.

I have not installed Office yet, so I will delay installing the updates
until Office and the Office updates are installed just to be cautious. In the
previous situation the recommendation here in the forum was to not install
KB912812 and I wanted to be certain that was not the case this time.

I have not been able to find David Lipman's post. Maybe I'm not using the
search feature correctly. I'd appreciate if you could provide a link, if that
is possible.

Thanks.

Hi Paul......Mike is in England and will be back on here in a few hours,
but I assume someone told you that Symantec and WinME do not play well
together. Use something else for an antivirus....there are a few free
ones and others that are way better than Norton.

Cheers...Heather

Symantec. Say no more. I'm sorry but I can't continue further as the
only help I am prepared to give to those who install malware on their
machine is help in removing it. Symantec + Win Me (or in fact any recent
Microsoft operating system) = Total unmitigated disaster leading to tears
and/or frustration.

One of the penalties of using the web interface to these newsgroups rather
than a proper newsreader.<g> David's message is 23 threads before this
one. was started on 28 Sept at 00:25 GMT (19:25 EDT), and has the subject
"VML Exploit in HTML not addressed in WinME, here's a fix"

Heather & Mike,

Thanks for your replies. Thanks to prior discussions on this forum I am well
aware not to install Symantec programs on an ME computer. (Actually the
reviews I've recently read of AntiVirus 2006 questions the appropriateness if
installing it on any machine regardless of the operating system. I have used
AV 2003 and 2005 with no problem with XP.)

Would you mind recommending your favorite antivirus program for an ME
machine? I'm presently working on three ME machines in need of protection. I
previously read about free versions of AVG and Avast in this forum, but I
wouldn't mind paying if there is a better choice.

The Symantec website offers free over-the-internet checking for viruses and
firewall security. That is what I was running. It downloads ActiveX controls,
and that what was being blocked. (I previously stated that it downloaded
software. Sorry. It's the Microsoft Office Update website that downloads
software.)

I found Dave Lipman's post and downloaded the zipped batch file. Thanks.

On newsgroup reading: I thought it made sense to read the Microsoft
newsgroups from the Microsoft website. At least the various newsgroups are
indexed nicely in the left pane. Are you stating that the "Search For"
function at the top of the screen doesn't work? (I know it didn't work in my
case, but I thought I was doing something wrong.)

Thanks for your help.

Paul,

I've found that eTrust from Computer Associates seems to work reasonably
well with Win Me. A one year free offer is available from
http://store.digitalriver.com/DRHM/Storefront/Company/caconsum/staticContent/PYPCtrialUS.html
Others will suggest the free AVG. Personally I'd avoid the offerings from
both Symantec and McAfee.

My comments regarding the suitability of using Symantec products with Win
Me does not extend to their on-line scanner although when I use one I tend
towards using that from Trend Micro.

I wouldn't know. I don't use and have no intention of using Microsoft
rather lame and pathetic attempt at creating a web interface to these nntp
newsgroup. <g> The few times I've used the interface I've found it "not
fit for purpose".

In addition to Mike's good words, I can personally vouch for Avast! from
Alwil Software. www.avast.com
It is freeware for personal use, however, it does require registration once
a year. From reviews that I have read, AVG from Grisoft and Avast! from
Alwil are two of the best 'freebies' and both work well with Me and XP.
One thing you will notice immediately, Avast! is only about 7-9Meg
(including defs), Norton (Symantec) AV is over 70 Meg *without* virus
defs!!!! Can you say 'bloatware?'
Symantec AV, being a $$$ app, should have some sort of dependable
support....one would think. Their support has all moved to Pakistan and any
questions submitted come back with 'rubber stamp' answers that, more often
than not, do not even address the issue. <stepping down from soapbox now>
Heirloom, old and walk, nay, RUN away from
Symantec

H,
I run Avast! on a couple of XP systems here and can thoroughly recommend
it for both x86 and x64 systems. The only reason I omitted it in my
earlier reply is that I have never personally used it with Win Me so I'm
pleased to see your post saying that it also works well with Win Me.

Yep.....although it was a number of versions ago.........I did run it on Me

Hi Mike.....

I have used EZ Trust for what......6 years?? Back when it was the free
InoculateIT PE and then I paid for it twice I think. The past 2 or 3
years, I have used the free one year trial that you recommended. Works
well on XP and also on WinME.

And I practice Safe Hex which is something all of the posters should do.
And damned if I remember all that I do, but it works. Haven't seen a
virus or trojan in years. Now watch me get hit with one after bragging,
lol.

Cheers.....Heather
