NetMeeting 3.01
Can anyone help me please. I am running Windows ME and I
have installed NetMeeting 3.01 but I find that when I
switch on my webcam on the other person can see me but I
can NEVER see him. We seem to hear each other speak but I
am wondering if I have downloaded the wrong edition of

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated,

Gnarly error at boot up
Hello:
Hoping someone can help me diagnose this error and offer
a fix. When I boot my Sony VAIO notebook running WinME,
part way through boot up the Windows ME splash screen
goes black, then I get a blue screen saying an error has
occurred. The error message is:
File Name: Ds1(01) + 0000D9C2 Error: 0E : 0028 : FF0A8AE2
At this point, my machine is hung and CTRL+ALT+DEL does
not work. If I do a hard reboot at this point, I can load
into Safe Mode, but my USB port appears dead, so my USB
CDROM and floppy drives don't work.
Any ideas on source of problem &/or how to fix this? I'd
really appreciate a reply to my email (crm0627@yahoo.com)
as well as to the newsgroup.
Thanks a lot,

Out of Memory
In fact this problem is the same under WINDOWS95,
WINDOWS88SE and WINDOWSME. I have three locally networked
systems running under each of these OSs in my little home
office. They are connected in a TCP/IP network on an
ETHERNET hub with DHCP services provided by an ADSL router
on the same hub (this LAN works fine, so does the DSL
link).
On each system I have a problem running any additional
programs when OUTLOOK and IE have been started. It takes
different forms, among which:
- program does not load citing "insufficient memory"
- program refuses to go into specific routines
citing "insufficient memory"
- program or computer stops responding
- the system bluescreens on me
- system asks to close tasks because of low memory
- in WORD the spell checker does not want to run due to
insufficient memory
- monitoring software shows very low or zero available
memory
Physical memory is 320M on W95, 256M on W98SE and 128M on
WME (so sufficient in each instance). On top of that I
have fixed but VERY LIBERAL virtual memory settings on
each system, and I thought this extension would be
exploited whenever RAM runs low (of course to the
detriment of speed, but without problems). The same
software shows very low virtual memory usage (typically
far below 10%)
I do have some background tasks always active (NORTON
AntiVirus AutoProtect, SYGATE FireWall), but again, if in
doubt I thought virtual memory would take the burden.
I even have a very small program I would like to stay
resident (CHRONOGRAPH, picking up an atomic clock signal
every hour), but have taken out because it disables the
running of more immediate and important tasks.
Anybody out there who can
- explain this behaviour
- possibly suggest a fix
Actually I thought MS would be the right source, but they
insist on a paid support contract before wanting to speak
to me at all and the knowledge base does not help me
either.
Looking forward to your responses, with my best regards
and gratitude for your trouble,

No middle ground.
I have a program that will only display in the Maximized
setting even though it used to display the re-sizable
windows. I can Minimize it, but when I right-click the
icon, Restore is no longer an option, only Maximize.
Conversely, when it is Maximized, the Restore button (mid

Minimize. I was told that this is a known glitch and
there is a fix (adjusting something in the registry) but I
could not locate it in the Knowledge Base. Can anyone

Windows Explorer - Folder Pane Missing
I recently had a problem starting Windows ME so used
scandisk to detect and fix some problems. Then I restored
my system back to the previous day.
When I was done all of that I was able to successfully
start ME.
However, since then, when I open up Windows Explorer I
don't get the folders displayed on the left hand side of
the window. An empty pane is displyed with just an X in
the top right hand corner of the pane, which allows me to
close the left pane. Then the window just looks like
the "My Computer" window. I tried the Menu options, i.e.,
View, Explorer Bar, Folders. That didn't change anything.

Lost icons after installing download from Man U pages
I had a call from a friend who has a computer running WindowsME. While she
was out her son visited Man U. web site and downloaded and installed
something. From what she says it sounds like it would have been a wallpaper.
Now whenever she starts the PC she cannot see all her icons. From what she
describes part of the screen is taken up by a picture (or part of a picture)
of a Man U shirt. The "Start" button does nothing at all. When she tries to
open "My documents" or "My computer", icons for which are still visible, she
gets an error message which goes something like "Security settings prohibit
running Active X". This is making it difficult for her to track down the
problem.
Sorry to be so vague but I haven't seen this myself, she's hundereds of
miles away and I'm finding it difficult to get really clear descriptions
from her. Also I'm not very familiar with ME as all my PCs are on Windows
2000.
I'm hoping someone else out there has seen this sort of problem and can tell
us how to fix it...

Explorer has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL (after load AdAware)
Running Win ME on Dell Dimension system.
Last night I downloaded, installed, & ran free version of AdAware
which was available through AOL. When it completed, there was
an error message in pop-up window which ties up the system.
The error recurs when I reboot. The error window says:
"Explorer has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL. Explorer will now close.
If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer."
When I click "close" button in the pop-up error message window, the window
disappears,
then reappears in about a second. I can't do anything else but repeatedly
close the error
window which then reappears. If I'm quick with my fingers I can
Ctrl-Alt-Del before the
error recurs, and from there power down. When system reboots, same error
recurs, after
ScanDisk completes its run.
I searched Microsoft WinME support site and Lavasoft (maker of AdAware) site
for
help but couldn't find anything relevant.

I've got a new to me but used HP running Windows ME. It didnt come

It fails with error 0x800A138F, despite trying everything on this <a
href=http://www.updatexp.com/0x800A138F.html
target=_blank>page</a>.
I tried downloading updates manually but some of them wont install.
they start to and then need the computer to reboot before they can
finsh. after reboot, but before windows starts, it errors out saying
that it couldnt proceed from 1% to 2%. hitting return continues
loading windows normally but the update never takes.
I have also been unable to upgrade directx, it fails almost
immmediately after unpacking the files saying Directx couldnt load a
file (doesnt specify which)and the install will shutdown.
So earlier tonight I found the CAB directory on ME and decided it
would be a good idea to run Setup, thinking that whatever is causing
the problem might be overwritten in the process.
Windows started to install itself but on reboot got stuck with the
same error about not being able to move on from 1% to 2%, push any key
to continue.
Only this time, after pushing a key, I get the same error message over
and over, it doesnt load. I'm stuck at this point. I tried F8,
step-by-step confirm, safe mode, etc. but I always get stuck at the
same part.
Right now i'm booting off my old drive (I can get to setup) which has
98 on it, so I'm able to get to the drive that has ME on it, I just
cant boot from it.

Hackers Secret Weapons - Virtual Private Networks
For one, if your on a Windows Platform and you didn't disable a number
of services which are enabled by default, including file and print
sharing, the chances of your computer being hacked/owned are very high.
Also, if you haven?t secured your browser or e-mail programs this can
cause your computer to be hacked/owned. Not disabling these services
and not having a firewall or anti-virus program from the beginning of
your computer going on the internet, is a loss cause. Backdoors and
Trojan Horses disable your anti-virus and firewalls. So checking for
open ports no matter where you go or how you test your ports will not
give you accurate results. GRC shields-up has on one occasion showed my
computer as having port 110 open. The reason for this is because a
malicious hacker was using my e-mail application at the time my computer
was checked for open ports.
If your on a Windows Platform (minus XP and NT), select Start, Settings,
Control Panel, Folder Options, View and make sure you select and have a
dot in the circle where it says Show Hidden Files and Folders.
Select Start, Control Panel, Network, and if you see two AOL adapters,
two TCP/IP, two dial-up adapters, one or two Virtual Private Network
adapters your computer has what hackers install called a Virtual Private
Network, BEWARE!
If you find your system re-boots itself from time to time, this
is another sign that an Administrator (hacker) has to update your
hacked system.
Select Start, type regedit, select Registry, Export Registry, and in
the box type say 3-12-02.txt and say OK. Then open this file with
a text editor or word application and you might be "shocked" to find
what
really is installed on your system. Check the bottom of this file,
since
hackers love to install a bunch of their crap here.
What these hackers do is disable your anti-virus program using Trojan
Horses, which makes checking for viruses or trojans useless. If running
a software firewall, the hackers install another version of what your
running
and program it so you aren't able to see their activities.
Once these factors take into play, the best bet to keep the hackers
out of your system is to perform the below.
My suggestion would be to keep the hard drive (sent it to the FBI, minus
your
personal files). Or make a copy of your entire hard drive, this way if
the hackers have destroyed any system using your computer, at least you
have evidence if the FBI ever come knock on your door. The Trackers
would like a copy, but that's another story in itself.
You might want to format the hard drive, install from CD-ROM only and
obtain a free port scanner for your operating system. You can download
one from zdnet.com, and before you go online, port scan your own
computer to check for any open ports. Backdoors, Trojan Horses and
Viruses are not the consideration you need to be concerned with when
your system is hacked. Your system can also be running a Proxy Server,
NNTP Server, SMTP Server, Web Server, SQL Server and a Virtual Private
Network. All of these factors need to be taken into consideration.
