MS VB/VS Enterprise
I am a retired mainframe (mostly) programer. I may have an opportunity to
acquire a copy of MS Visual Studio 6.0 Enterprise Edition. Can I use the
primary ingredients of this package (VB, VC, VJ, Interdev, and Foxpro) on my
desktop computer (Win ME), or does it expect heavy duty iron, back office
servers, etc?
Thanks

Promise Ultra2 IDE PCI Controller
Does anyone know if I have a problem?
The controller I plugged in sees my 5.4GB Maxtor hard disk, but does not see
my brand new 60GB hard disk. I was told that my PCI slot had to be 2.1
compliant. Which I assume it *is* since it sees the smaller hard drive.
But.... I Could be wrong.
FWIW, I do not know if my system is 2.1 compliant.
I am running Windows ME
It is P200 MMX.

VMM(12) Error Help Please
Hi my computer keeps switching off. It will boot up and after a certain time
and doing nothing in particular it just turns off. The only error I have
seen is this one VMM(12) + 00001E4C Error: 06:0028:C0280E4C. I haven't
installed any new software or hardware. I have opened up the tower and
checked all cables and checked that the cards and memory are all seated
correctly. Sometimes the computer will boot and sometimes it wont. Any help
would be really appreciated.
Thanks

System memory problem -- Because of large hard drive?
I have 512 megabytes of memory on my Dell 8100 using Windows ME. I
can't open more than one program at a time because I'll get error
messages that say I'm out of memory.
Norton Utilities says I have a system memory problem. I can't see that
I have any programs hogging a huge amount of system memory. Could it
be because I have a 160 gigabyte hard disk that's not partitioned?
Are there any simple fixes? If I went to a controller card and used
it's bios for the hard drive, would that free up memory?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Windows ME Uninstall
I am trying to get Windows ME off of my cousins computer
and I can't:
I have tried to boot to a dos prompt and bios won't let
me get to it.
The floppy drive doesn't work to make a startup disk.
When I go to Add/Remove Programs to Uninstall Windows

there. I'm stuck. I can't get into dos to just "format
c:". Can anyone else give me some options on what to do

Question for Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware users.
I don=B4t have problems with spyware and that kind of stuff,
but some people told me it was better to download Ad-Aware
and Spybot softwares, to avoid problems in the future.
I would like to know the opinion of some of you about these
softwares. Did you have any problems using them? Did they
affected Windows in any circunstances?
I don=B4t mind doing the download of these two softwares, but
I don=B4t want to have problems with my Windows Me.
Thank you.

USB Causes Boot Execution to Halt

Hi namesake!
Possibilities:-
1) A "remnant" USB hub driver on the hard disc, incompatible with the
hub on the new motherboard. Have you tried deleting all USB items from
the Device Manager and doing a refresh?
2) Physically faulty USB hub on MB
3) Faulty or outdated BIOS program. My main MB here often used to
freeze on bootup into WinME, less often into WinXP and rarely into
Linux until I upgraded (by "flashing") the BIOS for another reason. I
had suspected USB but having various or no devices connected seemed to
make no difference. It always booted OK on 2nd attempt, but had got
far enough to offer "Safe Mode", which wasn't necessary. I thought it
might be temperature, for that reason, but then had quite a few
first-time boots when the room was freezing. When I'd flashed the
BIOS, 3 sub-versions on, it suddenly prompted for different USB OHCI
drivers in WinME, WinXP, Win2003, Mandrake Linux, SuSE Linux and
Fedora Linux and now they all always go first time! (I use those
multi-boots to different partitions to support various clients - oh
and DOS6.22/Win3.11 too, but that knows nothing of USB!)
You'd have thought MB manufacturers would flash the right program into
the BIOS, wouldn't you?
But then, who does get it right the first time?
Have you tried installing a fresh WinXP? If you can spare about 4Gb of
your disc, you could shrink your partition with Partition Magic and
install a fresh XP in a second partition. It will automatically get a
multi-boot so you can still run the old one, too. A second disc fitted
as slave would do the same. That would prove if it was
hardware/firmware or software (residual drivers) at fault.
If the BIOS firmware needs upgrading, that would affect PCI USB hubs
as well as the MB one because the BIOS is the central controller for
any hub fitted. My own problem persisted after I fitted a PCI hub but
cleared on BIOS upgrade. You need to be very sure you get the correct,
genuine software, not some hacker's "clocked up" effort! Only the
MB-maker's own website (Taiwan?) will do. If you've had the MB less
than 12 months, push for a replacement under warrantee instead.

Getting rid of "BitDefender" resolved the error problem with "Xcommsvr".

One probably could find a solution for it, given the time.

Cannot run Windows programs from DOS prompt
All,
I have Windows ME on my laptop (OEM) and older desktop
(upgraded from win95 OSR2).
On my desktop system, I can run "console" programs (the
LAME MP3 encoder, etc.) and Windows GUI programs by typing
the program name at the DOS prompt and hitting ENTER.
On my laptop, however, the only programs I can run that way
are DOS programs; when I type the names of Windows GUI
programs or console programs at the DOS prompt and hit
ENTER, absolutely nothing happens -- I remain at the DOS
prompt.
Does anyone know what factors control this behavior, and
how I can eliminate the problem?
Thanks,

What does Restore actually restore?
Can someone pls advise exactly what system restore
restores? I assume the old registry, but am uncertain as
to program folders, files etc.
1. Is the registry that is restored, the exact previous
one (ie: it no longer contain ANY of the additions or
deletions of the one being replaced - that is contrasting
to using the registry export/import which I was told will
add back entries but will not delete any new additions
that were made).
2. Sometimes I see program files taken away, some times
they are still there.
3. Does it replace the complete system config files?
Pls advise

Menus open slowly after boot up
Running WindowsMe and IE6Sp2.
I recently did some old program file removal, ran scan
disk (no errors) and defraged my hard drive.
Now after initial boot up (everything loads OK), I noticed
that upon clicking the Start button it takes 2-5 seconds
to display the start menu, and upon opening the Windows
Explorer, it takes 2-5 seconds to display all the folders.
After one or two rounds of this, everything opens as
quickly as it normally use to and is fine until shut down
and a new boot up
.
Any ideas as to what is causing this and how to repair?
