Rundll32 error

Hello...

Can someone please help me with this? Hope I explain it properly..

When I open my add/remove program box...and attempt to access the Windows
Setup menu..
I always get an error message that says Rundll32 has caused an error in
Setupx.dll.
Rundll32 will now close.

I have no idea of how to fix this..but the Windows setup window is blank..

Anyway to take care of this?

Try extracting a fresh copy of "setupx.dll" to your Windows\System =
folder.

The problem has nothing to do with the version of setupx (sorry Ben) but
rather is usually the result of the use of a registry cleaner.

You really do need to be very very careful when using a registry cleaner
especially when you've deleted folders placed in the C;\Program Files by
Windows when installing Win Me.You've fallen into the trap that many
others have fallen in to over the years. If you backed up the entries
deleted by the reg cleaner try restoring them, especially the VARLID key.

I've attached a zip file containing a reg file containing all of the
required entries. Download this, extract the reg file and merge (right
click on the reg file and select "Merge") with the registry and this
should hopefully fix the problem.

This problem can be avoided in future by not deleting the folders placed
in Program Files during the installation of Win Me but more importantly by
not deleting any values in the key
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\VarLDID
when using a registry cleaner.

What happens is that if any of the folders referred to in VarLDID (you can
see them by opening the reg file using notepad) is deleted then most
registry cleaners will remove the value (entry) in the VarLDID key that
refers to that folder. This is because the registry cleaner considers it
to be a "dead" entry since the folder no longer exists. Setupx then has
problems because if can't find one of the paths it needs and then gives
the error you saw.

I did use a registry cleaner..and luckily..backed it up..and can reverse it
by the way...how often should one use a registry cleaner?
I really rather not use one if I dont HAVE to...but couldnt think of what
else to do
to get rid of all those old files I had from programs I didnt have
anymore...

Try extracting a fresh copy of "setupx.dll" to your Windows\System folder.

Thanks for the feedback and I'm pleased to read you've fixed your
problem.. Be careful when using registry cleaners as you have seen just
one small area where they can cause problems. Just FYI I never use
registry cleaners, or rather on the few occasions that I have, I have
never allowed them to remove any entries from the registry but rather just
noted what they had to suggest.

Im usually very careful...especially when Im new to a program...
I just didnt realize it could cause so much trouble...
I was using it on another suggestion as a way to free up hd space...
something about it being able to remove files and things from programs that
are no
longer on the pc...
But I will be leaving those cleaners alone..I'll have to find another way to
see whats hogging up
my resources...

Hope you don't mind me stepping in but you mentioned freeing up space, have
you by any chance had a look to see how much space System Restore is taking
up, perhaps that can be set a little lower.
Just my thoughts here, back to you Mike, and I agree about not using a
cleaner on the registry <g>

No, I dont mind you stepping in...I appreciate all the help I can receive!
I went and checked on the space System Restore was taking up...
It is near the max line...like maybe 3 slots away...and it has the number
624MB over the line
it is on.
I would think I need to lower that since it is near the max line..but what
is a decent
place to set it on Windows ME?
And no..I will not be using a cleaner on the registry....Ive had enough
trouble with that..

Hi Tarcia,
Usually with System Restore the maximum is 12½% of your drive size. I don't
know how big your drive is so don't know what the 624MB is you mention.

How many restore points does this give you, I have mine set to about 1% and
that gives me nearly two weeks restore points, that's on an 80GB drive
running XP Home. I can't remember what my WinME machine is set to without
going to switch it on <g>

Usually when doing a restore it's best to only go back a couple of days but
it could be OK up to a fortnight but anything further back than that can
often cause more problems than you are trying to undo <g>

How long's a piece of string? The answer to your question is somewhat
dependent on how you use your PC and what you do with it. If it is a
stable system and you rarely install or uninstall programs then lowering
the slide to the minimum 200MB can be OK, however if you tend to install
and then perhaps uninstall programs and games that you come across on your
wanders you might want to set a larger archive, around 400MB or so. Be
guided by the number and age of your checkpoints. Ideally you might like
to see a checkpoint each day (if you use your PC often) stretching back
around a week. You don't need checkpoints going back weeks (unless you
only have a few) as it can be a bit of a lottery if you restore to a
checkpoint created more than a few days ago - in part because one often
can't remember what changes one had made to the system between the date of
the checkpoint and now.

I use my pc mostly for odd and end things like emails, sometimes
games..nothing hardcore like
online gaming like with an Xbox or anything of that sort...mostly games that
came with the pc or a few Ive downloaded from RealArcade or Gamehouse.
I've just set it at 412MB..because I couldnt seem to get it to stop at just
400..at any rate..I'll see how this works out.
I dont have to worry about having check points so far back...The pc never
lets me go back that far anyway.
I can usually see the previous month..and usually the dates that can be used
as a restore point are
in bold numbers, but for some reason even still, they arent clickable. Or I
may have some that I can click, but then I get a
pop up telling me to pick a date to restore..even though I just did...
Not sure why it does that...

Hi Joan,
I have 11 points on the restore bar...and Ive just set it near the middle at
412 MB.
But I think I'll lower it a little bit more...I very rarely do restores, so
I should be
ok..

There is something very wrong if you are unable to select a bolded date in
the restore calendar. What actually happens when you try to do that? it
might be worth resetting system restore and then checking that all is OK.

You can only select one of the 11 preset values, the smallest of which is
200MB and the largest 12% of the size of your C: drive with the other 9
being equally spaced between those two extremes.

To reset System Restore:
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and check "Disable
System
Restore", Apply and IMMEDIATELY reboot. This will flush you restore
folder
and erase all checkpoints, then,
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and uncheck "Disable
System Restore", Apply and again IMMEDIATELY reboot. This should now
automatically create a new checkpoint immediately following the restart
and also rebuild the System Restore control files..
Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder:
System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore
slider
to your preferred setting. A figure of 200MB is normally more than
adequate
for day to day use allowing perhaps a week of checkpoints to be available
although increasing this to perhaps 400-500MB for a few days during
periods of
large installs such Microsoft Office is advisable.

Having reset System Restore you might wish to check that all is now
working by performing the following quick test.
1) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file.
2) Create a manual checkpoint
Could you create a checkpoint?
3) Delete the shortcut
4) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created.
Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages?
5) Reboot your PC
Was the checkpoint retained?
