Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Setup Tab

Please wait while setup searches
for installed components.

Then, I read (Note: No components show - at all - in this section.)

Run32dll
An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway,
click Ignore and save your in a new file. To quit this program, click Close.
You will lose information you entered since your last save.

After clicking either option, I read

Run32dll has caused an error in SETUPX.DLL

Oh gawd.. the bittersweet cyberworld of computers... ever grateful for any
help to solve this problem.

TIA AGAIN!

You really do need to be very very careful when using a registry cleaner
especially when you've deleted folders placed in the C;\Program Files by
Windows when installing Win Me.You've fallen into the trap that many
others have fallen in to over the years. If you backed up the entries
deleted by the reg cleaner try restoring them, especially the VARLID key.

I've attached a zip file containing a reg file containing all of the
required entries. Download this, extract the reg file and merge (right
click on the reg file and select "Merge") with the registry and this
should hopefully fix the problem.

This problem can be avoided in future by not deleting the folders placed
in Program Files during the installation of Win Me but more importantly by
not deleting any values in the key
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\VarLDID
when using a registry cleaner.

What happens is that if any of the folders referred to in VarLDID (you can
see them by opening the reg file using notepad) is deleted then most
registry cleaners will remove the value (entry) in the VarLDID key that
refers to that folder. This is because the registry cleaner considers it
to be a "dead" entry since the folder no longer exists. Setupx then has
problems because if can't find one of the paths it needs and then gives
the error you saw.

I hope this helps and solves the problem.

WOW! I sure do appreciate that, Mike. It corrected my problem. I will pay
heed to your advice.

This computer is 6 years old with all the original hardware and such. I am
hanging on to it until Vista comes out. I am trying hard to keep this one
running until then with all the problems I am experiencing AND boy oh boy do
I have glitches, but I still feel blessed.

Many thanks,
SGB

Try posting them one at a time and hopefully someone reading this
newsgroup will be able to suggest a solution.

I wonder why more people who want to edit their registry -- just learn
how to manually add and remove registry entries. I feel it is too
dangerous to rely on an automatic program. I definitely always back up
my registry when I tinker with it manually. <grin>

Dan,

I agree with you here 100%. Far better IMO to learn to manually edit the
registry rather than rely on automated tools which can then lead a user
into very serious trouble. Thank goodness for Win Me's scanreg /restore!

Exactly, Mike. 98SE has the scanreg /restore as well as the scanreg
/opt functionality as well.
