Hi there,

The "Show Desktop" icon has disappeared from the QuickLaunch toolbar. I
have searched for it but cannot locate the file. How do I go about locating
it and restoring it to this location? Do I need to Repair Windows ME? If
so what is the best way of doing this?

Thanks.

Lynn,

Either,
Look for the Show Desktop file in the Windows\system folder and drag a
copy to the quick launch bar, or, if the file really has gone missing,
Using Notepad, create a new document and enter the following text between
the two rows of +++
+++++++++++++++++
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
+++++++++++++++++
Now save to your desktop as a file called ShowDesktop.txt and then right
click this new file and rename it ShowDesktop.scf. This will recreate the
missing file and a copy should be placed in the windows\system folder and
another on the quick launch bar.

A handy alternative for the visually impaired is WINDOWS + D. A lot faster
than finding the icon and clicking it.

Not just for the visually impaired but also used by those who don't want
to unnecessarily clutter their quicklaunch bar with icons that duplicate
simple keystrokes. Personally I never use the ShowDesktop icon but
instead always use Winkey+D but the OP did ask how to recreate their
missing icon. :-) For example I never really understand why people click
My Computer or have an Explorer icon/shortcut on their desktop when
Winkey+E does the same job.

Actually, I have 2 explorer shortcuts, one that opens MyComputer and one
straight to my profile, different tasks that are easy to get to. Anyone
with a right click knowledge caan assign different shortcuts to whatever.

Thank you for the information. I especially like WINDOWS + D, so much
easier.

Quite welcome, Lynn. I don't come around often, but thanks for the
feedback...it lets me know I did something right.
