I think WINME sets the number of backup points to 5. However, a year
ago I recall a method of changing that to whatever you wanted. I've
forgotten how to tweak the registry (I think that was how it was done)
to change to 10.

Why would you want to do this? Today I couldn't get any of 4 restore
points to boot. The 5th oldest one did. Unfortunately, the new system
restore point wiped out the one that worked, and the new one WOULDN'T WORK!

Ain't Microsoft wonderful?

Does anyone recall this procedure?

TIA, Frank

Frank,

I think you are perhaps a little confused here as the backups I think you are
talking about have nothing to do with system restore. The number of system
restore checkpoints varies depending on both the amount of space allocated to
the restore archive and also the amount of changes made to your system. Thus
on a Win Me PC here with no recent software or hardware changes I can see 20
checkpoints have been made over the last 8 days in a restore archive set to
the minimum 200MB.

What I think you may be thinking of is the number of copies of the registry
that are backed up into rb00?.cab files in your windows\sysbckup folder by
scanregw the first time you boot your PC each day. The default number is 5
but this can be altered as can what is backed up and location of the backup by
editing the file scanreg.ini in your windows folder. The line to alter is the
line that I expect at the moment reads:
MaxBackupCopies = 5

Note that these backups are not part of Win Me's system restore but are rather
used by scanreg if you choose to restore a previous copy of the registry using
scanreg /restore.

Thanks Mike, you are correct. It does apply to the registry backups.
Unfortunately I had five system restore checkpoints and with the FIFO
methodology I lost the one restore checkpoint that actually worked. It
would appear that the limiting factor on my machine was the size of the
space allocated to System Restore. Oh well, once I get it working
again I will make multiple system restore points.

Thanks again. The newsgroups always work.
